BACKGROUND: One-stage full-mouth disinfection (FMD), in which full-mouth scaling and root planing (SRP) is performed with adjunctive use of chlorhexidine, was introduced in 1995. There have been several reports on the effectiveness of this treatment protocol. However, FMD was reported to induce pyrexia frequently. We examined the effects of full-mouth SRP in conjunction with azithromycin administered orally before SRP to control the number of bacteria. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of full-mouth SRP using azithromycin with conventional SRP.

The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical efficacy of scaling and root planing alone versus tetracycline fiber therapy used adjunctively with scaling and root planing in the treatment of nonresponsive active periodontitis in patients under supportive periodontal therapy. Thirty patients who were receiving supportive treatment and had at least two nonadjacent periodontitis sites with a probing depth of between 4 and 8 mm and bleeding on probing, or had aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels above 800 microIU in the gingival crevicular fluid in separate quadrants participated in thi

Mini-surgical approaches in 4 to 7 mm probing depths have been shown to facilitate improved deposit removal as compared to closed instrumentation. At the same time this treatment is less traumatic than more extensive flap reflection for root planing. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical effects of closed root planing (C/SCRP) to those of root planing augmented by papilla reflection and fiber optic illumination (PR/SCRP) over a 6-month period. Fourteen patients with moderate/advanced adult periodontitis received each therapy in 2 experimental periodontitis sites (PS = greater t

In the present investigation, a scanning electron microscopy analysis was performed to evaluate the effects of the topical application of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) gel associated with Cetavlon (EDTAC) in removing the smear layer and exposing collagen fibers following root surface instrumentation. Twenty-eight teeth from adult humans, single rooted and scheduled for extraction due to periodontal reasons, were selected. Each tooth was submitted to manual (scaling and root planing) instrumentation alone or combined with ultrasonic instruments, with or without etching using a 24% EDTA

This study aimed to correlate levels of salivary and serum glutamate in patients with/without generalized periodontitis and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and to evaluate the effect of scaling and root planing (SRP) on glutamate and cognition. We hypothesized that periodontitis and T2DM are associated with altered glutamate levels and poorer cognitive performance and explored whether SRP-related changes in glutamate relate to cognitive performance. Eighty patients aged 45-70-yr were allocated into four groups: healthy, periodontitis, T2DM and periodontitis with T2DM (n = 20 each). Periodontal

Chronic periodontitis remains highly prevalent and scaling and root planing alone may be insufficient to achieve optimal clinical improvement at moderate periodontal pocket depths. Therefore, it is of interest to clinical efficacy of scaling and root planing alone with scaling and root planing combined with tetracycline-impregnated collagen fibers in patients with chronic periodontitis. Thirty patients (60 sites) with probing depths of 4-7 mm were treated using a split-mouth design and plaque index, gingival index, probing depth and clinical attachment level were recorded at baseline and follo

INTRODUCTION: Periodontal disease is a significant health issue resulting from the accumulation of biofilm, leading to inflammation and tissue destruction. Traditional "scaling and root planing (SRP)" is the gold standard for managing periodontitis, while "laser-assisted periodontal therapy (LAPT)" is gaining popularity as an adjunctive treatment. This study aims to compare the clinical and microbiological outcomes of LAPT versus SRP.
METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted on patients with chronic periodontitis. Clinical parameters, such as "probing depth (PD), clinical attachme

AIM: The present study was carried out to evaluate the clinical efficacy of scaling and root planing (SRP) alone and commercially available chlosite gel adjunctive to SRP in the treatment of chronic periodontitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 416 sites selected from 26 patients presenting with chronic periodontitis (age group ≥30 years) of both sexes, with pocket depth of ≥6 mm were recruited for the study. A split-mouth design was employed with one site receiving SRP alone (Group I) and the other receiving SRP followed by placement of commercially available chlosite gel (Group II) and a

BACKGROUND: A number of studies in patients with periodontitis have compared scaling and root planning (SRP) combined with an adjunctive treatment to SRP alone. Within that literature, an array of studies with overlapping investigators has consistently yielded substantially greater effects of adjunctive treatments than had been previously noted. This report investigates discrepancies between that cluster of research and the most recent American Dental Association (ADA) systematic review.
METHODS: This review was preregistered at https://osf.io/4meyd/. A search using the Scopus platform identi

BACKGROUND: The current understanding of the pathogenesis of periodontal disease has resulted in adjunctive use of various pharmacologic agents in periodontal therapy. The objective of this investigation was to assess the efficacy of atorvastatin and simvastatin (because of their pleiotropic properties) as an adjunct to dental scaling and root planing (SRP) by local delivery, i.e. placing them subgingivally, in the treatment of chronic periodontitis.
METHODS: Local delivery systems for atorvastatin and simvastatin were prepared in sodium alginate suspension to be administered with calcium chl

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the microbiological effects of full-mouth (FM) and partial-mouth (PM) scaling and root planing (SRP) in type 2 diabetic subjects with chronic periodontitis (ChP), up to 12 months.
METHODS: Thirty-four type 2 diabetic subjects with ChP received either FMSRP (n = 17), in two sessions within two consecutive days, or PMSRP (n = 17) in four sessions within 21 days. Six subgingival biofilm samples per subject were analysed by checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization for 40 bacterial species at baseline, 3 and 12 months.
RESULTS: Both therapies significantly reduced the l

The extent to which patients with chronic periodontitis could improve their condition by oral hygiene without instrumentation was investigated. Ten subjects were assessed, instructed in a subgingivally-directed oral hygiene technique (OH) twice a week until plaque was present at less than 20% of sites on two occasions and reassessed after 6 weeks when half the mouth was root planed. A final assessment took place after a further 6 weeks. At six weeks the mean number of sites with bleeding on probing (BOP) was significantly reduced (P < 0.001), the percentage of sites with BOP falling from 59% t

Deposits of dental plaque or calculus are typically quantified using planimetric techniques. However, error is introduced into a quantitative analysis of plaque deposits using these methods, since they require a significant amount of human intervention. The purpose of this study is to describe and validate a computerized imaging routine which has the potential to objectively identify material on dental roots and measure the area covered by these deposits. Dentiform teeth with simulated plaque were videorecorded. A computer routine was developed based on a flood-fill algorithm which analyzed im

CONTEXT: Both gingivitis and periodontitis are due to the detrimental effects of the microbe-laden biofilm. The mainstay of periodontal treatment is, therefore, the disruption of this biofilm by scaling and root planing (SRP). Other treatment protocols such as systemic antimicrobials have been administered as adjuvants after scaling and root planning. However, due to antimicrobial resistance, as well as a shift of the flora from a symbiotic to a dysbiotic one, this mode of treatment has its shortcomings. Thus, local drug delivery has gained prominence as a therapeutic tool.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Full-mouth scaling and root planing (FM-SRP) acts as a potent inflammatory stimulus immediately after treatment; however, systemic inflammation typically improves in the long term. The contribution of FM-SRP to systemic biological and acute-phase responses is largely unknown. The purpose of this prospective intervention study was to assess the systemic and local biological responses after FM-SRP.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-one patients with generalized moderate-to-severe chronic periodontitis received 1-stage FM-SRP. Measurement of clinical parameters and body temp
