Human herpes virus-6 (HHV-6) infection is a common infection in the paediatric population and is increasingly reported in immunosuppressed adult patients. It has been reported as the causative agent of disease in few case reports in immunocompetent adults. We report herein an unusual case of HHV-6-associated viraemia, pneumonitis and meningitis in a patient who presented with dyspnoea, hypoxia, dry cough and headache. She was treated for atypical pneumonia with no improvement. Meningitis was suspected as headache kept worsening. HHV-6B was detected by PCR in the cerebrospinal fluid, and subseq

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) comprises two separate viruses, HHV-6A and HHV-6B, although this distinction is not commonly made. HHV-6B is ubiquitous in the population with primary infection usually occurring in early childhood, and often resulting in febrile illness. HHV-6B is also recognized as a pathogen in the immunocompromised host, particularly in transplant recipients. HHV-6A is less well characterized and may have a more restricted prevalence. Both viruses are unique among the human herpesviruses in that the entire viral genome can be found integrated into the telomeric regions of host c

Human herpesvirus (HHV)-6, comprised of HHV-6A and HHV-6B, belongs to the betaherpesviruses that infect 95%-100% of humans. Primary infection, known as exanthema subitum, occurs in early childhood. Reactivations of latent HHV-6, mostly HHV-6B, are common after liver transplantation. The vast majority of them are asymptomatic; in a minority of cases, the virus may infect the liver transplant, causing graft dysfunction or hepatitis. An association between hepatic HHV-6 infection and indeterminate acute liver failure (ALF) has been shown, but the causality is not clear because of the ubiquitous n

Xenotransplantation using pig cells, tissues, or organs is advancing toward clinical application to address the shortage of human donor organs for treating organ failure. However, this emerging technology carries the risk of transmitting pathogenic porcine microorganisms, particularly viruses. The recent transmission of a porcine herpesvirus to the first human recipient of a pig heart highlights the urgent need for more rigorous screening of donor pigs. To identify potentially pathogenic porcine viruses, highly sensitive and specific detection methods are required. PCR-based techniques able to

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia worldwide. Human Herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6), a neurotropic virus capable of establishing lifelong latency in the CNS, has been suggested as a potential risk factor in the pathogenesis of AD. However, studies investigating this association have reported inconsistent findings. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to explore this association further and shed light on the matter.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to systematically review and meta-analyze existing literature to assess the association between HHV-6 infection an

BACKGROUND: Human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) has been associated with various neurologic disorders, but movement disorders are rare. This case describes a patient who developed a choreoathetotic movement disorder in the setting of HHV-6 infection.
CASE REPORT: A 72-year-old woman with AML and recent HHV-6 encephalitis following stem cell transplant presented with involuntary movements. Neurologic examination demonstrated motor impersistence and irregular non-stereotyped writhing movements consistent with a choreoathetotic movement disorder secondary to HHV-6 infection.
DISCUSSION: This is the fir

Human herpesvirus 7 known since 1990 is closely related to herpesvirus 6B. It replicates in human cells only after binding CD4 receptor. It establishes lifelong latency in infected cells, and its frequent reactivations result in asymptomatic virus shedding through saliva. Most children acquire infection by age 3 and 4, but in any later age group seronegative individuals are at risk of infection. Rarely, exanthema subitum or convulsions with fever in children, pityriasis rosea in young adults, lethal complications in immunocompromised persons with concomitant herpesvirus 6B and cytomegalovirus

BACKGROUND: Viral load in whole blood is the main virological marker for assessing HHV-6 infection and is used as an indication to begin antiviral therapy. Results are usually expressed as the number of genomic equivalent copies (gec) per mL of blood, although HHV-6 DNA in blood is mainly localized in lymphocytes and polymorphonuclear leukocytes.
OBJECTIVES: Since leukocyte counts vary in immunocompromised patients, especially in stem cell transplant recipients, the aim of this study was to compare HHV-6 load expressed as gec per mL with load expressed as gec per million cells (mc), using qua

PURPOSE: Ascl1 is a transcription factor (TF) that plays key roles in regulating retinal development. Recent studies have further uncovered its intriguing potential to drive retinal neuron regeneration by reprogramming Müller glial cells. However, the efficiency and specificity of Ascl1-mediated regeneration outcomes remain far from optimal, and the molecular mechanisms underlying its dual roles in retinal development and adult Müller reprogramming are not fully elucidated. Given the close developmental relationship between late-stage retinal progenitor cells (RPCs) and Müller glial cells, thi

Bilateral eyelid oedema, also known as Hoagland sign, is a specific physical sign of infectious mononucleosis (IM) syndrome caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection in older children and adolescents. IM syndrome, which is mainly caused by EBV or cytomegalovirus infection, has milder symptoms in young children than in older children and adolescents. The human herpesvirus 6B (HHV-6B) causes roseola infantum (sixth disease) and various complications in children younger than 2 years; however, bilateral eyelid oedema and IM syndrome are rarely reported. We report the case of a 1-year-old boy wi

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) infection typically presents as a benign and self-limiting viral illness. However, in rare cases, it can lead to life-threatening complications. In this case a previously healthy four-month-old infant was admitted in circulatory collapse, experiencing seizures and rapid cerebral deterioration. The cause was identified as HHV-6-induced acute necrotising encephalopathy (ANE) and acute liver failure. Despite intensive medical efforts, the condition was unresponsive to treatment, and the infant was transitioned to palliative care.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune neutropenia (AIN) is divided into primary and secondary forms. The former is more prevalent in children and is usually a self-limiting disease. Secondary AIN is more common in adults and often occurs in the setting of another autoimmune disorder or secondary to infections, malignancies or medications. Several viral and bacterial pathogens were described to trigger AIN. Here we report a case of AIN in an adult woman associated with human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) infection.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of AIN in an adult woman associated with HHV-6 infection. The pati

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) encephalitis has a high mortality rate. Among those who survive, ~80% develop some type of permanent neurologic disorder. Early diagnosis and treatment may help prevent long-term sequelae. There have been several case reports as well as retrospective and prospective studies associating HHV-6 encephalitis with some form of sodium imbalance, either hyponatremia or hypernatremia; however, the exact frequency post-HCT is unknown, with reports ranging from 30% to 100%. We performed a systematic review of the literature and found 34 cases of HHV-6 encephalitis reported in

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) frequently reactivates after solid-organ and hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), and it has been associated with important outcomes in these settings. In 1-2% of recipients or donors, HHV-6 was inherited through chromosomal integration. Although HHV-6 chromosomal integration has not been associated with disease, the resulting very high levels of HHV-6 DNA in human tissue and blood samples can be challenging to interpret in the transplant setting. This review addresses the recent findings regarding the clinical outcomes associated with HHV-6

Porcine cytomegalovirus (PCMV), that is actually a porcine roseolovirus (PRV), is a common herpesvirus in domestic pigs and wild boars. In xenotransplantation, PCMV/PRV has been shown to significantly reduce the survival time of pig kidneys and hearts in preclinical trials with different non-human primates. Furthermore, PCMV/PRV has been transmitted in the first pig to human heart xenotransplantation and contributed to the death of the patient. Although transmitted to the recipient, there is no evidence that PCMV/PRV can infect primate cells including human cells. PCMV/PRV is closely related t
