In this report, we show an age-related buildup of agglutinating activity as well as serum activity against rosette formation in children living in areas of Kenya and Gabon where malaria is endemic. Sera from Kenyans in general exhibited a stronger and wider immune response toward the epitopes, probably reflecting a difference in transmission patterns between the two areas. Infiltrating cells were harvested by mechanical means from skin tumors and lymph nodes of myocis fungoides. Plasmodium falciparum expresses clonally variant proteins on the surface of infected erythrocytes to evade the host immune system. The clonally variant multigene families include var, rifin, and stevor, which express Erythrocyte Membrane Protein 1 (EMP1), Repetitive Interspersed Families of polypeptides (RIFINs), and Sub-telomeric Variable Open Reading frame (STEVOR) proteins, respectively. The mechanisms by which the hemoglobin genotype AS protect against severe malaria are not fully understood. Simultaneous and independent use of cocaine and alcohol by heroin addicts was shown to variably modulate the ability of their T cells to form E-rosettes with sheep erythrocytes (E). A technically simple procedure is described for simultaneous determination of numbers and functions of human blood lymphocyte subpopulations. The method is based on stimulation with mitogens (PHA, Con A and PWM) with simultaneous rosetting to detect E receptors and C3 receptors.
