Rotator cuff injury is a disease in which the muscle and tendon that constitute the rotator cuff are torn causing shoulder pain and limited function. Osteoporosis (OP) is a systemic metabolic bone disease characterized by decreased bone mass, destruction of bone microstructure, decreased bone strength, and increased bone fragility. Both are common musculoskeletal diseases that occur in middle-aged and elderly people, and their prevalence gradually increases with age. Clinically, rotator cuff injury and OP comorbidity are very common, especially in terms of bone metabolism. In recent years, pla

Rotator cuff injuries result in more than 500,000 surgeries annually in the United States, many of which fail. These surgeries typically involve repair of the injured tendon and removal of the subacromial bursa, a synovial-like tissue that sits between the rotator cuff and the acromion. The subacromial bursa has been implicated in rotator cuff pathogenesis and healing. Using proteomic profiling of bursa samples from nine patients with rotator cuff injury, we show that the bursa responds to injury in the underlying tendon. In a rat model of supraspinatus tenotomy, we evaluated the bursa's effec

INTRODUCTION: Rotator-cuff injury (RCI) represents 50% of shoulder injuries, and prevalence increases with age. Even with successful tendon repair, muscle and joint function may not return.
METHODS: To explore the dysfunction, supraspinatus and ipsilateral deltoid (control) muscles were biopsied during arthroscopic RCI repair for pair-wise histological and protein-expression studies.
RESULTS: Supraspinatus showed fiber atrophy (P < 0.0001), fibrosis (by Sirius Red, P = 0.05), reduced vascular density (P < 0.001), and a lower proportion of slow fibers (P < 0.0001) compared with the ipsilat

Rotator cuff tears (RCTs) are one of the primary causes of shoulder pain and dysfunction in the upper extremity accounting over 4.5 million physician visits per year with 250,000 rotator cuff repairs being performed annually in the U.S. While the tear is often considered an injury to a specific tendon/tendons and consequently treated as such, there are secondary effects of RCTs that may have significant consequences for shoulder function. Specifically, RCTs have been shown to affect the joint cartilage, bone, the ligaments, as well as the remaining intact tendons of the shoulder joint. Injurie

Rotator cuff disease, external and internal impingement syndromes, low shoulder stability, various types of trauma, and overuse injuries are all related to sports activities. In order to check symptoms in patients with disability and shoulder pain, clinicians use different methods and diagnostic imaging assessment. The research is aimed at evaluating whether there is a difference between provocation function tests (PFT) and ultrasonographic (US) testing of muscles within the rotator cuff in elite collegiate athletes. Patients (n = 184) were recruited from university team sports selections and

To explore whether the hydrogels loaded with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes can facilitate the repair and regeneration of tendons in rats with acute rotator cuff injury through regulating transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-β1). After the extraction and identification of mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes, 60 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into five groups (n = 12 per group): control (untreated), repair-alone, GelMA (hydrogel only), BMSC-Exos (hydrogel + BMSC-Exos), and BMSC-Exos + TGF-β1 inhibited (hydrogel + BMSC-Exos + TGF-β1 inhibitor P144). UNLABELLED: Purpose of this study: To elucidate the origin of cell populations that contribute to rotator cuff healing, we developed a mouse surgical model where a full-thickness, central detachment is created in the supraspinatus.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three different inducible Cre transgenic mice with Ai9-tdTomato reporter expression (PRG4-9, αSMA-9, and AGC-9) were used to label different cell populations in the shoulder. The defect was created surgically in the supraspinatus. The mice were injected with tamoxifen at surgery to label the cells and sacrificed at 1, 2, and 5 weeks postopera

BACKGROUND: The failure rate of tendon-bone healing after repair of rotator cuff tears remains high. A variety of biologic- and cell-based therapies aimed at improving rotator cuff healing have been investigated, and stem cell-based techniques have become increasingly more common. However, most studies have focused on the implantation of exogenous cells, which introduces higher risk and cost. We aimed to improve rotator cuff healing by inducing endogenous stem cell mobilization with systemic administration of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF).
