Final-year dental students' self-perceived knowledge and self-reported clinical approaches to vital pulp therapy: a single-institution cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Undergraduate dental education should prepare students to understand and apply contemporary vital pulp therapy (VPT) procedures in permanent teeth. However, students' self-perceived knowledge, stated treatment preferences, and self-reported clinical approaches regarding VPT may vary according to their theoretical and clinical training. This study aimed to describe final-year dental students' self-perceived knowledge, recognition of VPT procedures, stated treatment preferences, and self-reported clinical approaches regarding VPT. METHODS: This single-institution cross-sectional sur

Factors associated with dental dam use during non-surgical root canal treatment: A national dental PBRN study.

OBJECTIVE: Dental dam (DD) isolation is widely recognized as the standard of care during non-surgical root canal treatment (RCT), yet its routine use by general dentists (GDs) remains inconsistent. This study utilized real-world data from the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network ("Network") to quantify the frequency of DD use and identify practitioner and practice characteristics associated with it. METHODS: A total of 153 Network dentists (49 endodontists, 104 GDs) enrolled 1860 adult patients requiring RCT across all six Network regions. After exclusions, data from 1701 patients

Use of extraoral periapical radiography in Indian population: technique and case reports.

Performing intraoral radiography in certain patients is difficult as these patients are unable to tolerate intraoral film placement. To assist such patients a new technique has been innovated using extraoral film placement. Use of this technique has been documented in Caucasian and Taiwanese populations. In this paper we report use of this technique for Indian population. We have done about 40 cases using this technique and have found the average angulation for maxillary (-25+/-5 degrees) and mandibular (-15+/-5 degrees) teeth for Indian population. We recommend use of this technique in the pe

Latex allergies and adverse reactions: a review of the literature.

In the last few years, the allergenic potential of latex has been receiving greater attention. While latex allergies have been widely reported in the literature, the prevalence and severity have rapidly increased in the last few years. The role of rubber in the prevention of HIV infection has played a part in recognizing the allergenic potential, as with increased emphasis on infection control in the dental office has come an increase in complaints of adverse reactions to surgical gloves. A review of the literature reveals latex allergy problems to be not confined to gloves, but to articles of

Foreign body ingestion in dental practice.

Most foreign bodies pass through the gastrointestinal tract uneventfully. The majority of the reported literature describes the management of ingested blunt objects. However, ingestion of sharp objects can still occur with a higher rate of perforation corresponding to treatment dilemmas. We report a case of inadvertently ingested sharp foreign body by a special child, which was retrieved by endoscopic guided forceps. Urgent endoscopic assessment and retrieval of recently ingested sharp dental foreign body is indicated and routine use of preventive measures such as rubber dam, gauze throat scre

Prophylactic treatment of dens evaginatus using mineral trioxide aggregate.

Two case reports with dens evaginatus are presented. Each patient had one tooth affected. There was a prominent tubercle on the occlusal surface of the mandibular second premolar. Under local anesthesia and rubber dam isolation a partial pulpotomy was conducted and mineral trioxide aggregate was placed. After 6 months the teeth were removed as part of planned orthodontic treatment. Histological examination of these teeth showed an apparent continuous dentin bridge formation in both teeth, and the pulps were free of inflammation. These cases show that mineral trioxide aggregate can be used as a

Accidental ingestion of a dental object during a periodontal surgical procedure on an IV sedated patient: Case management.

INTRODUCTION: Foreign-body aspiration (FBA) and ingestion (FBI) are rare but serious events that occur in dental offices throughout the world every year. Such events can have significant medical, legal, and financial consequences for both the dental clinician and the patient. By presenting this case study, we aim to highlight the proper management and possible sequelae of such an event. METHODS AND RESULTS: A 72-year-old woman underwent a dental procedure with intravenous sedation. In the process of dental treatment, a dental bur was accidentally ingested. The patient was promptly referred to

Electrical Pulp Testing: Sources of Error.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate identification and assessment of an inflamed or necrotic tooth is essentialfor endodontic treatment. The purpose of this research was to investigate possible sources of error associated with the use of the electric pulp tester (EPT). METHODS: Forty-six intact teeth (23 tooth pairs) in 22 patients were evaluated in vivo. For the tooth pairs, one tooth had to have been previously endodontically treated and restored with a class II amalgam restoration. The restoration was required to have proximal contact with a class II amalgam of another vital posterior tooth. EPT was pe

Process-based quantitative description of carbon biogeochemical cycle in a reclaimed water intake area.

Reclaimed water plays a pivotal role in addressing water scarcity and pollution. The carbon (C) cycle significantly impacts aquatic ecosystems and water quality, yet the C biogeochemical cycle in nutrient-rich reclaimed water remains enigmatic. This study focuses on reclaimed water, developing a conceptual biogeochemical mass balance model to examine C cycling and assess the C budget in the highly eutrophic Jian and Chaobai rivers. Furthermore, it quantifies the complex biogeochemical interactions among reclaimed water, atmosphere, fluvial sediments, and phytoplankton. The findings elucidate t

[A PhD completed. Scientific insights into restoring teeth with deep preparation outline].

Eliminating saliva or blood from contaminating adhesive treatments becomes increasingly challenging as the cavity size increases, especially when the preparation margin is located below the cementoenamel junction. A direct composite restoration can elevate this margin to a supragingival level, allowing for better isolation with a rubber dam. This process, known as deep margin elevation, enables dentists to more reliably bond partial restorations. This dissertation investigates how severely compromised teeth with deep preparation margins can best be restored, with a focus on the use of deep mar
