Polar fractions of the methanolic extracts of the stem- and root-barks of SCHUMANNIOPHYTON MAGNIFICUM (Rubiaceae) reduced the effects of cobra venom cardiotoxin in the chick biventer cervicis nerve-muscle preparation IN VITRO. No activity was observed against a curaremimetic neurotoxin from cobra venom. Further fractionation of the extracts showed that the activity was not due to alkaloidal components, but the active substances could not be identified or isolated.

Nauclea pobeguinii is traditionally used for treatment of malaria. Previous studies on the plant extract and strictosamide, the putative active constituent, showed a profound in vivo activity of the extract but no in vitro activity of strictosamide. This might indicate that one or more compounds present in the extract, most likely alkaloids, act as prodrugs undergoing biotransformation after oral administration resulting in the active compounds. The phytochemical composition of a N. pobeguinii extract was characterized using UHPLC-UV-HRMS (Ultrahigh-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Ultraviole

Phytochemical investigation of the roots of Rothmannia wittii led to the isolation of three new iridoid glucosides, named rothmanniosides A-C (1-3), and nine known compounds (4-12). Their structures, including their absolute configurations, were elucidated by thorough analysis of mass spectrometric and NMR spectroscopic data, together with CD calculations. Compounds 4 and 11 are reported from the Rubiaceae family for the first time.

Camptothecin (CPT) is a monoterpenoid indole alkaloid produced in several plants and is a clinically important natural resource that serves as the precursor for the semi-synthetic anticancer drugs such as topotecan and irinotecan. CPT possesses a characteristic quinoline-containing scaffold; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying the downstream steps of its biosynthetic pathway remain unclear. In this study, we identified 17-O-acetylcamptothecinic acid (1) in hairy roots of Ophiorrhiza pumila. The abundance of compound 1 was markedly reduced following methyl jasmonate treatment, concomit

Peptide-based hydrogels have great potential for applications in tissue engineering, drug delivery, and so on. We systematically synthesize, characterize, and investigate the self-assembly behaviors of a series of polypeptide-based penta-block copolymers by varying block sequences and lengths. The copolymers contain hydrophobic blocks of poly(γ-benzyl-l-glutamate) (PBG, Bx) and two kinds of hydrophilic blocks, poly(l-lysine) (PLL, Ky) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG, EG34), where x and y are the number of repeating units of each block, where PBG and PLL blocks have unique functions for nerve re

The species of the genus Palicourea (Rubiaceae family) is well-known for its toxicity towards animals, particularly livestock. This work reports the occurrence of skin irritation during the manipulation of Palicourea longiflora, considering the prevalence of the monofluoracetic acid (MFAA) and another toxic compound: methyl salicylate. The MFAA was identified by 19F-NMR and methyl salicylate by gas chromatography linked to mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis. Additionally, an anatomical study of leaves had been used to explain the mechanism of penetration of the toxic principles.

On a global scale, people have used plants to treat diseases and infections, and this has raised interest on the plant biodiversity potencial in the search of antimicrobial principles. In this work, 75 crude n-hexanes, dichloromethane and methanol extracts from the aerial parts of 25 plants belonging to four botanical families (Asteraceae, Euphorbiaceae, Rubiaceae and Solanaceae), collected at the Natural Regional Park Ucumari (Risaralda, Colombia), were evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities by the agar well diffusion method. The antibacterial activities were assayed agai

In coffee (Coffea arabica L.), male sterility is a prerequisite for the exploitation of heterosis since it provides an efficient and reliable method for the production of hybrid seeds. Given its relevance, the objective of this study was to identify male-sterile genotypes within the Colombian Coffee Collection that can be used in genetic improvement. For this purpose, Ethiopian germplasm and progenies derived from hybrids between C. arabica x C. canephora were explored between 2017 and 2021. In the first stage, genotypes without visual presence of pollen were preselected in the field, followed

The present study was designed to investigate the effect of Rubia cordifolia (Rubiaceae) against experimentally induced gastric ulcer and compare activity with its fractions by employing aspirin plus pylorus-ligated ulcer screening model in Wistar rats. Total acidity, volume of gastric acid secretion, total acid output, and pepsin activity show significant reduction, when compared with the control group. The present study confirmed that chloroform fraction showed the significant activity at lower doses compared to parent extract. The mechanism can be attributed to decrease in gastric acid secr

Today, ethno-pharmacology is a very important resource in order to discover new therapies for the current diseases. Moreover, another good justification for the ethno-pharmacological approach is to obtain new, effective, less expensive and simple therapies, limiting at the same time the cost of pharmaceutical research. Two major anti-malarial drugs widely used today, i.e. quinine and artemisinin, came respectively from Peruvian and Chinese ancestral treatments reported in the traditional medicines. In this contest, there is an urgent need for the discovery of new drugs, due to the critical epi

Mitragyna speciosa Korth. (Rubiaceae) is a tree that is commonly found in Southeast Asia. Leaves from this tree have been traditionally been used for both their stimulant properties as well as an opium substitute. The tree/leaves are currently illegal in four countries, but is currently legal and widely available in the United States. To date over 40 compounds have been isolated from the leaves. The major alkaloid found within the crude extract, mitragynine, has been the subject of many pharmacological studies. In addition to the pharmacological studies, two total syntheses of mitragynine have
