Use of protective equipment in a cohort of rugby players.

PURPOSE: To describe the level of usage of protective devices and equipment in a cohort of New Zealand rugby players. METHODS: Male and female players (N = 327) from a range of competitive grades were followed over the course of the season. Participants were interviewed weekly about their participation in rugby and use of protective equipment. The main outcome measure was percentage of all player-weeks of follow-up for which each equipment item was used. RESULTS: Mouthguards, the most commonly used equipment item, were worn for 64.9% of player-weeks. Mouthguard usage ranged from 55.0% of pla

Unrecognized and Unreported Concussions Among Community Rugby Players.

This study examined the prevalence of intentionally unreported and potentially unrecognized concussions in community rugby players and whether nondisclosure reasons vary by sex, position, or playing history. An online survey was completed by 1037 players (41.0% female; mean age 31.6 ± 11.3 years; 10.1 ± 8.1 years playing) who reported diagnosed, unreported, and unrecognized concussions. Poisson regression models estimated prevalence ratios (PRs), and Fisher's exact tests compared reasons for nondisclosure. The diagnosed, unreported, and unrecognized concussion rates were 66.5%, 32.4%, and 42.2

A Global Women's Rugby Union Web-Based Survey.

Rugby Union (rugby) is a full-contact team sport characterised by frequent collision events. Over one third (2.7 million) of global rugby participants are women and girls. Yet, most rugby research, laws, and regulations are derived from the men's game with limited transferability to the women's game. This includes research focused on injury and concussion management. Greater insights are urgently required to enable appropriate adaptations and support for all rugby participants. Therefore, this paper presents the protocol for a project that sought to gather insights into the understanding, expe

Do stingers affect scapular kinematics in rugby players?

BACKGROUND: Scapular dyskinesis is observed in subjects with pathologic conditions of the shoulder; however, there is limited information about the factors related to scapular dyskinesis among participants in rugby. The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence, reliability, and relationships between scapular dyskinesis and variables related to the shoulder in high-school rugby players. METHODS: A total of 164 Japanese high-school rugby players were evaluated with questionnaires, physical examinations, and a video analysis during their preseason. After evaluation of the inter-rat

Acetabular fractures following rugby tackles: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Rugby is the third most popular team contact sport in the world and is increasing in popularity. In 1995, rugby in Europe turned professional, and with this has come an increased rate of injury. CASE PRESENTATION: In a six-month period from July to December, two open reduction and internal fixations of acetabular fractures were performed in young Caucasian men (16 and 24 years old) who sustained their injuries after rugby tackles. Both of these cases are described as well as the biomechanical factors contributing to the fracture and the recovery. Acetabular fractures of the hip

Motivation and burnout among top amateur rugby players.

INTRODUCTION: Self-determination theory has proven to be a useful theoretical explanation of the occurrence of ill-being on a variety of accounts. Self-determination theory may also provide a useful explanation of the occurrence of athlete burnout. To date, limited evidence exists to support links between motivation and burnout. PURPOSE: To examine relationships and potential causal directions among burnout and types of motivation differing in degree of self-determination. METHOD: Data were collected on burnout using the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire and Sport Motivation Scale from 392 top a

Factors influencing tackle injuries in rugby union football.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the influence of selected aspects of lifestyle, personality, and other player related factors on injuries in the tackle. To describe the detailed circumstances in which these tackles occurred. METHODS: A prospective case-control study was undertaken in which the tackling and tackled players ("the cases") involved in a tackle injury were each matched with "control" players who held the same respective playing positions in the opposing teams. A total of 964 rugby matches involving 71 senior clubs drawn from all districts of the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) were observed by n

Effect of a concussion on subsequent baseline SCAT performance in professional rugby players: a retrospective cohort study in global elite Rugby Union.

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed whether concussion affects subsequent baseline performance in professional rugby players. Annual baseline screening tests are used to guide return-to-play decisions and concussion diagnosis during subsequent screens. It is important that baseline performances are appropriate and valid for the duration of a season and unaffected by factors unrelated to the current head impact event. One such factor may be a concussion following baseline assessment. SETTING: The World Rugby concussion management database for global professional Rugby Union. PARTICIPANTS: 501 pro

Mechanical load monitoring in rugby: limitations and future perspectives.

PURPOSE: Quantifying mechanical work in rugby is essential for improving performance, managing fatigue, and informing load monitoring practices. Traditional metrics that assess acceleration and speed separately fail to capture the interaction between these parameters during gameplay. This study presents an external power approach based on individual acceleration-speed profiles (ASP) to provide an integrated description of players' external work. METHODS: Data were collected from 51 professional rugby matches across two seasons. Traditional metrics and external power indicators derived from AS

Recurrent Pericarditis in a Rugby Player: Imaging-Guided Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent pericarditis in young athletes is challenging, as relapse risk, treatment duration, and return to play must be balanced. CASE SUMMARY: A 26-year-old rugby player developed recurrent pericarditis after atrial septal defect repair. At initial presentation, she had moderate pericardial late gadolinium enhancement on cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) and a high pericarditis risk score, and she achieved clinical remission on rilonacept. At taper initiation, she was asymptomatic with normal inflammatory biomarkers yet showed mild residual late gadolinium enhancement on CMR. Aft

Neurodegenerative disease risk among former international rugby union players.

BACKGROUND: Autopsy studies of former contact sports athletes, including soccer and rugby players, frequently report chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a neurodegenerative pathology associated with traumatic brain injury. Nevertheless, little is known about the risk of neurodegenerative disease in these populations. We hypothesised that neurodegenerative disease risk would be higher among former elite rugby union players than the general population. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study accessing national electronic records on death certification, hospital admissions and dispensed

White matter abnormalities in active elite adult rugby players.

The recognition, diagnosis and management of mild traumatic brain injuries are difficult and confusing. It is unclear how the severity and number of injuries sustained relate to brain injuries, such as diffuse axonal injury, diffuse vascular injury and progressive neurodegeneration. Advances in neuroimaging techniques enable the investigation of neuropathologies associated with acute and long-term effects of injury. Head injuries are the most commonly reported injury seen during professional rugby. There is increased vigilance for the immediate effects of these injuries in matches, but there h
