Plants have a long history of use for their medicinal properties. The complexity of botanical extracts presents unique challenges and necessitates the application of innovative approaches to correctly identify and quantify bioactive compounds. For this study, we used untargeted metabolomics to explore the antimicrobial activity of Rumex crispus (yellow dock), a member of the Polygonaceae family used as an herbal remedy for bacterial infections. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with high resolution mass-spectrometry (UPLC-MS) was used to identify and quantify the known antimicrob

Photosynthetic carbon assimilation under photorespiratory conditions requires tight coordination between chloroplast electron transport and mitochondrial redox metabolism, yet the contribution of mitochondrial alternative oxidase (AOX) remains unresolved. Using 1 mM salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM) to inhibit the AOX pathway in Rumex K-1 leaves, we investigated how mitochondrial alternative respiration contributes to carbon assimilation. AOX inhibition imposed a non-stomatal limitation on CO2 assimilation and reduced photosystem II (PSII) electron transport. However, low O2 or elevated CO2 allevi

We report large induction (>65(fold) increases) of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from a single leaf of the invasive weed mossy sorrel, Rumex confertus Willd. (Polygonaceae), by herbivory of the dock leaf beetle, Gastrophysa polygoni L. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). The R. confertus VOC blend induced by G. polygoni herbivory included two green leaf volatiles ((Z)-3-hexenal, (Z)-3-hexen-1-yl acetate) and three terpenes (linalool, ß-caryophyllene, (E)-ß-farnesene). Uninjured leaves produced small constitutive amounts of the GLVs and barely detectable amounts of the terpenes. A Y-tube o

Rumex japonicus Houtt (RJH) is a valuable plant used in traditional medicine to treat several diseases, such as scabies and jaundice. In this study, Jurkat cell growth inhibitory extracts of R. japonicus roots were subjected to bioassay-guided fractionation, resulting in the isolation of three naphthalene derivatives (3-5) along with one anthraquinone (6) and two phenolic compounds (1 and 2). Among these compounds, 2-methoxystypandrone (5) exhibited potent anti-proliferative effects on Jurkat cells. Analysis by flow cytometry confirmed that 2-methoxystypandrone (5) could significantly reduce m

The present study investigated the phytochemical profiling, antioxidant, antimicrobial, hypoglycemic, and antiulcer activities of acetone, methanol, and petroleum ether extracts of aerial parts of Rumex hastatus. The antioxidant activity was examined through two techniques: the DPPH assay and the reducing power assay (RPA). The phytochemical constituents were studied by qualitative analysis (preliminary, GC-MS, HPLC) and quantitative analysis (spectrophotometry). The extracts were tested for hypoglycemic (anti-α-amylase) and antiulcer (anti-urease) activities through enzyme inhibition assays.

Recent trends in anticancer therapy is to use therapeutic agents which not only kill the cancer cell, but are less toxic to surrounding normal cells/tissue. One approach is to cut the nutrient supply to growing tumor cells, by blocking the formation of new blood vessels around the tumor. As the phytochemicals and botanical crude extracts have proven their efficacy as natural antiangiogenic agents with minimum toxicities, there is need to explore varieties of medicinal plants for novel antiangiogenic compounds. Rumex vesicarius L. (Humeidh), is an annual herbal plant with proven medicinal value
