Salmon farming: occupational health in a new rural industry.

The medical hazards of salmon farming can be grouped into those related to marine safety, fish husbandry, fish-farm diving and disease treatments. The hostile water environment requires thermal protection and personal buoyancy aids as workers frequently fall in the water from boats or cages. Feedstuffs may generate respirable dust and attract rats, creating a risk of leptospirosis. Musculo-skeletal injuries are common from lifting nets. Fish-farm diving has particular risks which can be minimized. Organophosphorous pesticides are used to treat sea lice and employees require health surveillance

An AIDS training program for rural mental health providers.

A total of 194 mental health care providers in Arkansas, primarily from rural areas and small communities, participated in a four-hour training program designed to improve their knowledge about the psychosocial and neuropsychiatric aspects of HIV and AIDS. Participants' responses to questionnaires completed before and after training indicated that the program was successful in achieving its goal. However, only a minimal number of providers reported completing drug, alcohol, and sexual histories and AIDS risk assessments for any of their patients before the training occurred. The authors emphas

The health status of rural primary schoolchildren in Central Zambia.

In a study of 528 rural primary schoolchildren in Central Zambia, it was found that the health status of the schoolchildren was not good as indicated by inadequate nutrition, a high prevalence of S. haematobium (18%), hookworm (33%), and malaria (43%) infections. There were no statistically significant differences in prevalence of undernutrition between girls and boys and there were no significant trends with age. The treatment and control of hookworm disease, urinary schistosomiasis and malaria deserve a high priority in this area. As for malaria, until an international programme on its contr

The expansion of health houses and fertility outcomes in rural Iran.

Iran experienced a dramatic decline in fertility from 1984 to 2001, which was most rapid in rural areas. Although many attribute the decline to the government's active participation in providing family planning services, most services were provided after the initial fertility decline that took place after 1984. We assess the extent to which timing of exposure to basic healthcare is related to fertility outcomes. We estimate the association between a woman's age of exposure to a health house (clinic) and number of children, using the 2001 Iranian Household Expenditure and Income Survey and the

Teaching rural women in Nicaragua the principles of breast health.

Breast cancer has emerged as an important health condition worldwide, including developing countries. Screening is limited or non-existent in resource-poor areas. The purpose of this study was to assess knowledge, attitudes, and practices of self (SBE) and clinical (CBE) breast examinations among 198 rural Nicaraguan women. Ten (5.1%) had performed a SBE, and 16 (8.1%) had a CBE. CBE was significantly associated with a pre-instruction total score of 70% or greater (OR = 13.7, 95% CI = 1.26, 149.70, p = 0.03). Family history of breast cancer was significantly associated with performing a SBE (O

Ijanikin: a study of environmental health in a rural Nigerian community.

Ijanikin is a typical Yoruba village in the rain forest belt area of Southern Nigeria. The childhood years in this community are fraught with the danger of numerous communicable diseases, compounded by inadequate supply of good quality foods to meet normal requirements and allow a margin of safety for the stress of infections. Overcrowding and poor ventilation in the houses are important factors in the spread of communicable diseases, while poor sanitation and deficient personal hygiene account for the heavy burden of intestinal parasitoses. Improvement in the health of this and other similar
