Supportive care in cancer : official journal of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer2025eng
PURPOSE: Febrile neutropenia (FN) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in chemotherapy patients. Nurses play a vital role in FN management, yet studies assessing their knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) in India are limited. This study aimed to evaluate KAP among nurses in a rural Indian tertiary cancer center.
METHODOLOGY: This cross-sectional KAP survey involved 111 staff nurses at a tertiary cancer center in rural India from October to November 2022. A validated questionnaire with 17 multiple-choice questions (five knowledge, five attitude, seven practice) was used. Demographi

BACKGROUND: Maternal morbidity and mortality is rising in the United States. Previous studies focus on patient attributes, and most of the national data are based on research performed at urban tertiary care centers. Although it is well understood that nurses affect patient outcomes, there is scant evidence to understand the nurse work system, and no studies have specifically studied rural nurses. The authors sought to understand the systems-level factors affecting rural obstetric nurses when their patients experience clinical deterioration.
METHODS: The research team used a qualitative descr

Background:mHealth is increasingly regarded as having the potential to support service delivery by health workers in low-resource settings. PIERS on the Move (POM) is a mobile health application developed to support community health workers identification and management of women at risk of adverse outcomes from pre-eclampsia. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of using POM in Mozambique on community health care workers' knowledge and self-efficacy related to caring for women with pre-eclampsia, and their perception of usefulness of the tool to inform implementation. Method:

Medical abortion was introduced in Nepal in 2009, but rural women's access to medical abortion services remained limited. We conducted a district-level operations research study to assess the effectiveness of training 13 auxiliary nurse-midwives as medical abortion providers, and 120 female community health volunteers as communicators and referral agents for expanding access to medical abortion for rural women. Interviews with service providers and women who received medical abortion were undertaken and service statistics were analysed. Compared to a neighbouring district with no intervention,

PURPOSE: The shortage and distribution of primary care providers (PCPs) has left a gap in the health care of society, particularly those residents within the Lower Mississippi River Delta region, where pockets of rural and underserved populations reside. Described in this study are the workforce distribution, characteristics, and likelihood of advanced practice nurses (APNs) to practice in these communities.
DATA SOURCES: Surveys were completed by 479 APNs in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Other sources included census data and the designation of Health Professional Shortage

Thailand's cannabis policy transition created a knowledge vacuum regarding the boundaries between authorized medicinal use and non-medical consumption, thereby increasing misuse risks. This study evaluated a culturally-tailored medicinal cannabis health literacy program delivered by Village Health Volunteers (VHVs) under public health nursing supervision as a community-based harm reduction strategy. An exploratory sequential mixed-methods design was employed in Northern Thailand. Phase 1 surveyed baseline health literacy ( n = 462 ). Phase 2 involved focus groups to co-design the intervention

PURPOSE: To examine the effect of a nurse-led, 360-degree video-based virtual reality disaster risk reduction program (VR-b-DRRP) on disaster literacy, preparedness, and individual resilience among rural adults, who are often underprepared for disasters because of limited fixed infrastructure, distance from health services, and low health literacy.
DESIGN: A randomized controlled trial with an intervention group and a control group (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT06565962).
METHODS: Sixty-four adults from a rural village were randomly allocated to either the intervention group (n = 32) or the contro

BACKGROUND: Rising cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in rural sub-Saharan Africa are largely attributable to insufficient awareness, treatment and control of hypertension. The delivery of care is further constrained by health system limitations, including shortages of physicians, inadequate infrastructure, challenges in medication supply chains and geographical barriers to access. As a tactic to increase access, adherence and continuity of care, task-shifting hypertension management to nurses-often with the assistance of community health workers-has become popular. The evidence on the eff

Socio-ecological determinants of high myopia incidence among school students largely remain unexplored, especially in developing countries. A cross-sectional study was conducted in rural schools in North India to assess the relationship between these determinants and myopia among adolescent students. A public health nurse used a pre-tested questionnaire (demographics, family ocular status, and screen time) and Snellen's chart for testing visual acuity, and referred suspected cases for cycloplegic refraction assessment. Among the total of 955 students, the median (range) age was 14 (13-15) year

OBJECTIVES: To generate effect sizes of preliminary program outcomes and identify areas for program improvement related to a nurse-led, community-based screening, referral, and advocacy program for women with perinatal opioid use disorder (OUD): the Engaging Mothers for Positive Outcomes with Early Referrals (EMPOWER) program.
DESIGN: We extracted outcomes retrospectively from medical records for the first 19 mother-newborn dyads who participated in the program (postintervention group). We compared these outcomes with those of 19 randomly selected mother-newborn dyads in which mothers had per

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the long-term risk of cervical cancer among women screened by visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) and to evaluate the benefit of additional colposcopy triage in rural south India.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted among 31 343 women who had undergone VIA at Dindigul district, India between January 1, 2000, and August 5, 2003, as part of a randomized screening trial. Women with positive VIA test results were offered colposcopy triage by trained nurses. Cervical cancer incidence data during follow-up (January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2012) were obtained

BACKGROUND: Nurse AMIE (Addressing Malignancies in Individuals Everyday) is a technology-enabled intervention developed to improve symptom self-management and quality of life in cancer patients. As the intervention was translated from earlier pilot trials for patients with metastatic breast cancer (NA-MBC) to a voice-activated version on Amazon Echo Show for women with metastatic breast cancer (NA-Echo), and finally to a rural advanced cancer population including all cancer types (NA-Rural), systematic documentation of adaptations was needed to ensure transparency and support future disseminat

BACKGROUND: The burden of visual impairment and avoidable blindness has been attributed to the shortage and poor distribution of adequately trained eye care personnel. In the district health system, primary health care (PHC) nurses are the first point of contact for eye care patients. To provide adequate eye care, the nurses in PHC clinics apply their knowledge on basic eye health to ensure best practices and management for patients that present at their clinics. Anecdotal evidence regarding the knowledge and practices of these PHC professionals is scarce. The purpose of this study was to eval

BACKGROUND: Retention is especially critical in rural and underserved areas of East Africa, such as Turkana County in Kenya, where resource limitations, harsh conditions, and a lack of professional development opportunities deter nurses from staying. In addition, female nurses face unique challenges shaped by systemic inequities and gendered expectations, influencing their retention.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore factors influencing retention of female nurses in Turkana and to offer new perspectives on the concept of retention from underserved regions in East Africa.

BACKGROUND: Resource-limited countries face challenges of integrating rehabilitation services into primary healthcare. This is always hindered by many factors such as poor healthcare policy, a shortage of healthcare providers, limited knowledge among healthcare providers, and resource constraints. This study aimed to understand rehabilitation needs in primary care and explore current management practices for rehabilitation services in primary care with the goal of generating evidence to inform policies and interventions for the improvement of rehabilitation services at primary care.

BACKGROUND: High levels of mobbing are reported in Greek nurses, but the intraindividual and perceived group emotional correlates are little investigated.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between workplace mobbing (specifically in the nursing sector of a public rural hospital in Greece) and emotional correlates.
METHODS: Questionnaires measuring emotional aspects such as Negative Act Questionnaire - Revised (NAQ-R) for measuring perceived exposure to bullying and victimization at work, Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), Overall Job Satisfaction Scale (OJS), Job Affect Scale (JAS: posit

Many high-risk conditions of pregnancy are undetected until the time of delivery in low-income countries. We developed a point-of-care ultrasound training protocol for providers in rural Uganda to detect fetal distress or demise, malpresentation, multiple gestation, placenta previa, oligohydramnios and preterm delivery. This was a mixed-methods study to evaluate the 2-week training curriculum and trainees' ability to perform a standard scanning protocol and interpret ultrasound images. Surveys to assess provider confidence were administered pre-training, immediately after, and at 3-month follo

In Tanzania, the impact, on clinical outcomes and treatment-seeking behaviour, of a rural, nurse-led clinic that provides free, antivenom-based treatment of snakebite envenomation was recently assessed. Data on all 85 patients who, between April 2007 and the end of 2009, received treatment for snakebite envenomation at the Snake Park clinic in Meserani, Tanzania, were collected prospectively. Although only four cases of snakebite envenomation were treated in the last 9 months of 2007, 34 such cases were treated in 2008 and 47 in 2009. The 85 snakebite cases had a mean age of 23 years and a mal

BACKGROUND: Person-centered care that honors individual preferences can improve the well-being of nursing home (NH) residents with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). However, preferences such as going outside independently are often restricted due to perceived safety risks. There is a critical need for strategies that help NH staff balance safety concerns with residents' autonomy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed the Decision-making In aGing and demeNtIa for autonomy (DIGNITY) intervention using the Community-Engaged Intervention Mapping (CEIM) Model. This multilevel, theory
