PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Immune system modulators have been under investigation to help elucidate the underlying pathophysiologies of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Psoriasin (S100A7) and calgranulins (S100A8, S100A9, and S100A12) are S100 proteins that have been studied for their immune-mediating responses to pathogens within the context of CRS. This review highlights the expression patterns and proposed roles of S100 proteins in CRS with (CRSwNP) and without (CRSsNP) nasal polyps.
RECENT FINDINGS: Elevated levels of S100A7 and S100A12 were measured in the sinonasal tissues of patients with CRSsNP

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 is a disease that affects people globally. Beyond affecting the respiratory system, COVID-19 patients are at an elevated risk for both venous and arterial thrombosis. This heightened risk contributes to an increased probability of acute complications, including acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Given the unclear relationship between COVID-19, AMI, and AIS, it is crucial to gain a deeper understanding of their associations and potential molecular mechanisms. This study aims to utilize bioinformatics to analyze gene expression data, identify

Kynurenic acid (KYNA) has recognized anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. Previous studies demonstrated that KYNA reduces TNF-α, S100A12, S100A8/9, and α-defensin production while increasing tumor necrosis factor-stimulated gene-6 protein (TSG-6) levels in rheumatoid arthritis. This study evaluated a synthetic KYNA analog's effects on TNF-α, S100A8/9, S100A12, α-defensin, and interleukin-17 (IL-17) production and TSG-6 expression in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Atherosclerosis is an arterial disease associated with dyslipidemia, abnormal arterial calcification and oxidative stress. It has been shown that a continued chronic inflammatory state of the arterial wall contributes to the development of atherosclerosis. The inflammatory stimulation, recruitment of inflammatory cells and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines enhances vascular inflammation. Some members of the S100 proteins family bind with their receptors, such as advanced glycation end products (RAGE), scavenger receptors (CD36) and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR-4), contributing to the cellu

BACKGROUND: In our recent genome-wide association study, we found that genetic polymorphisms in the complement factor H (CFH) gene and S100A gene region are strongly associated with serum matrix metalloproteinase 8 (MMP-8) concentration and the release of MMP-8 from neutrophils. As MMP-8 is centrally involved in the pathogenesis of periodontitis, we aimed to evaluate the presence of genetic polymorphisms of S100A8/A9/A12, MMP8, and CFH in periodontitis. In addition, we studied whether polymorphisms of these genes affect the concentrations of S100A8, S100A12, MMP-8, or complement activation mar

Osteoporosis and diabetes represent major global public health challenges. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) serve as key components of the innate immune system by capturing and eliminating pathogens. This exploratory study aimed to preliminarily identify biomarkers associated with NETs in osteoporosis with diabetes and to provide initial insights into underlying molecular mechanisms. A transcriptomic sequencing dataset was integrated to analyze the molecular profiles of comorbid osteoporosis and diabetes (OP-DM). The NETs-related genes (NETs-RGs) were curated from previous literature. As

BACKGROUND: IgA vasculitis (IgAV) is a small-vessel vasculitis characterized by immune complex deposition, neutrophil activation, and endothelial injury. S100 proteins are recognized mediators of inflammation and vascular damage; however, their specific biological and clinical relevance in IgAV remains incompletely understood.
OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aimed to synthesize current evidence on the mechanistic and clinical roles of S100 proteins in vasculitides, focusing on IgAV, and to evaluate their potential utility as biomarkers of disease activity, organ involvement, and prognosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Particularities of the fetal immune response to infection cause a heightened inflammatory state that acts synergistically with microbial insult to induce damage. Proteomics offers the opportunity for detecting fetuses at risk of sepsis and neurological injury.
RECENT FINDINGS: Molecular tools (16S-rRNA) demonstrate that the diversity of microbial agents of intra-amniotic infection exceeds what is suspected clinically or is documented by cultures. The resulting inflammatory process has the potential to damage the fetus in utero. Stepwise algorithms (mass restricted score) ha

The present study investigated the effects of dual specificity phosphatase 1 (DUSP1) gene silencing using lentiviral vector-mediated small interfering (si)RNA on the release of proinflammatory cytokines through the regulation of the mitogen‑activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway in mice with acute pancreatitis (AP). Two siRNA‑DUSP1 sequences and one scramble siRNA sequence were designed, and the expression of DUSP1 was detected using western blot analysis to screen for the one with a higher interference rate. An AP mouse model was established, and KM mice were assigned to either a c
