Impact of Primary Tumor Resection on Survival of Patients with Metastatic Gallbladder Carcinoma: A Population-Based, Propensity‑Matched Study.

BACKGROUND Gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) is relatively rare but highly aggressive and it has poor prognosis, especially for metastatic GBC. We aimed to determine the prognostic significance of primary tumor resection on patients with metastatic GBC. MATERIAL AND METHODS The records of patients with GBC with distant metastasis from 2010 to 2015 were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Kaplan-Meier methods were used to compare overall survival (OS) and carcinoma-specific survival (CSS) between patients receiving primary tumor resection and those without

Epidemiology of brain metastases and leptomeningeal disease.

Brain metastases affect a significant percentage of patients with advanced extracranial malignancies. Yet, the incidence of brain metastases remains poorly described, largely due to limitations of population-based registries, a lack of mandated reporting of brain metastases to federal agencies, and historical difficulties with delineation of metastatic involvement of individual organs using claims data. However, in 2016, the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) program released data relating to the presence vs absence of brain metastases at diagnosis of oncologic disease. In 2020,

Interpreting cancer trends.

The interpretation of cancer incidence trends is complicated by short-term random variation, artifactual fluctuations introduced by screening, changes in diagnosis or disease classification, completeness of reporting, and by the multiplicity of factors that may affect risk for specific cancer sites. We analyzed trends in 56 different cancer sites and subsites in the U.S. SEER registries in the period 1975-2002 using join-point analysis. The increase in cancer incidence for all sites combined that became evident with the inception of the SEER registries in the mid-1970s has abated since the ear

The effect of multiple primary rules on population-based cancer survival.

PURPOSE: Different rules for registering multiple primary (MP) cancers are used by cancer registries throughout the world, making international data comparisons difficult. This study evaluates the effect of Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) and International Association of Cancer Registries (IACR) MP rules on population-based cancer survival estimates. METHODS: Data from five US states and six metropolitan area cancer registries participating in the SEER Program were used to estimate age-standardized relative survival (RS%) for first cancers-only and all first cancers matchin

Glottic cancer in Ontario, Canada and the SEER areas of the United States. Do different management philosophies produce different outcome profiles?

We compared the management and outcome of glottic cancer in Ontario, Canada to that in the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program areas in the United States to determine whether the greater use of primary radiotherapy with surgery reserved for salvage in Ontario was associated with similar survival and better larynx retention rates than the U.S. approach where primary surgery is used more often. Electronic, clinical and hospital data were linked to cancer registry data and supplemented by chart review where necessary. Initial treatment and survival in patients diagnosed in t

Epidemiological and Prognostic Differences in Malignant Mesothelioma Between Eastern China and SEER Database.

Eastern China malignant mesothelioma (MM) presents distinct features-younger age, female predominance, and moremalignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPeM)-contrasting with the Western profile of older males with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). Robust survival data for this population are still unavailable. This retrospective study included 253 MM patients from Zhejiang Cancer Hospital (2010-2024; 222 from Zhejiang Province, ZJ cohort) to update regional epidemiology and compare survival with the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program (SEER). The ZJ cohort exhibited a younger me

The influence of marital status on survival of gallbladder cancer patients: a population-based study.

Marital status has been found to be a prognostic factor for survival in various cancers, but its role in gallbladder cancer (GBC) has not been fully studied. In this study, we used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER)-registered database to analyze the survival of GBC patients with different marital status. A total of 6,627 GBC patients were selected from SEER database from 2004 to 2013. The age, race, grade, histologic type, AJCC stage, SEER stage and marital status were identified as independent prognostic factors. Married GBC patients had a higher 5-year cancer-spe

Burkitt's lymphoma in the USA: cases reported to the American Burkitt Lymphoma Registry compared with population-based incidence and mortality data.

Since 1971, the American Burkitt Lymphoma Registry (ABLR) has been collecting clinical, epidemiological and laboratory data on patients with Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) diagnosed in the USA. Although the 256 confirmed ABLR cases have the advantage of uniform pathological review, the ABLR is a relatively 'passive' registry, with the majority of cases being submitted by interested physicians. To determine the pattern of BL in the USA on a population basis, we analysed incidence and survival data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program of the National Cancer Institute (NCI)

Anal cancer incidence and survival: comparing the greater San-Francisco bay area to other SEER cancer registries.

The incidence of squamous cell carcinoma of the anus, anal canal, and anorectum (SCCA) has increased over time. However, there are still no national guidelines on screening for SCCA among high-risk populations. Providers at University of California, San Francisco have been at the forefront of providing anal dysplasia screening. To determine whether such a screening program allows for earlier detection of abnormalities and consequently, improves patient survival, we conducted an ecological study using data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program to compare the San Fr

Cancer-specific mortality in high-risk or very high-risk prostate cancer patients treated with focal therapy vs. radical prostatectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Focal therapy (FT) in high-risk or very high-risk prostate cancer (CaP) is not guideline-recommended. However, it may be occasionally used, but its effect on cancer-specific mortality (CSM) relative to standard treatment options such as radical prostatectomy (RP) is unknown and was addressed in the present study. METHODS: In the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database (2010-2022), high-risk or very high-risk CaP patients according to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines, treated with either FT or RP, were identified. A multivariable log

Trends in the proportion of second or later primaries among all newly diagnosed malignant cancers.

BACKGROUND: Improvements in cancer survival mean that an increasing number of survivors may live long enough beyond their initial cancer to be diagnosed with additional independent primary cancers. The proportion of newly diagnosed cancers that are second- or higher-order primaries and how this proportion has changed over the past several decades were examined. METHODS: Data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program were used to identify incident malignant primaries diagnosed between 1975 and 2017. Using the SEER sequence number, the authors tabulated the proportion

Establishment and validation of a nomogram model for predicting the survival probability of differentiated thyroid carcinoma patients: a comparison with the eighth edition AJCC cancer staging system.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to develop a clinically predictive nomogram model to predict the survival probability of differentiated thyroid carcinoma patients and compare the value of this model with that of the eighth edition AJCC cancer staging system. METHODS: We selected 59,876 differentiated thyroid carcinoma patients diagnosed between 2004 and 2015 from the SEER database and separated those patients into a training set (70%) and a validation set (30%) randomly. We used Cox regression analysis to build the nomogram model (model 1) and the eighth edition AJCC cancer staging model (model 2).

A novel prognostic nomogram for predicting survival in diffuse pleural mesothelioma.

Recent advances in the management of diffuse pleural mesothelioma (DPM) have increased interest in prognostication and risk stratification on the basis that maximum benefit of combination immunotherapy appears to be seen in patients who otherwise would have the worst prognosis. Various grading schemes have been proposed, including the recently published Mesothelioma Weighted Grading Scheme (MWGS). However, predictive modelling using deep learning algorithms is increasingly regarded as the gold standard in prognostication. We therefore sought to develop and validate a prognostic nomogram for DP
