Comparison of Limberg Flap and Karydakis Flap Repair in Pilonidal Sinus Surgery: A Prospective Case-Control Study.

Background Pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) is a chronic inflammation and infection of the sacrococcygeal region. It often affects young adult males and produces clinical findings with abscess and discharge in the sacrococcygeal region or painful sinus tract in the natal cleft. The best surgical technique for sacrococcygeal PSD is still disputed. This study aimed to compare the Karydakis flap technique (KFT) and Limberg flap technique (LFT) used in the surgical treatment of the sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus. Methodology A total of 140 patients diagnosed with pilonidal sinus between 2010 and 2012

Partial Sacrectomy for Resection of a Sacral Chordoma: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

Sacral chordomas are infrequent tumors that arise from remnants of the notochord. They are most often found in the sacrum and skull-base.1,2 These lesions rarely metastasize and usually have an indolent and oligosymptomatic clinical course. Chordomas show low sensitivity to standard radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Operative resection with wide resection margins offers the best long-term prognosis, including longer survival and local control.1,3 However, achieving a complete resection with oncological margins may be difficult because of the anatomic complexity of the sacrococcygeal region.4

The Role of Anterior Spine Surgery in Deformity Correction.

There are a range of anterior-based approaches to address flexible adult spinal deformity from the thoracic spine to the sacrum, with each approach offering access to a range of vertebral levels. It includes the transperitoneal (L5-S1), paramedian anterior retroperitoneal (L3-S1), oblique retroperitoneal (L1-2 to L5-S1), the thoracolumbar transdiaphragmatic approach (T9-10 to L4-5), and thoracotomy approach (T4-T12). The lumbar and lumbosacral spine is especially favorable for anterior-based approaches given the relative mobility of the peritoneal organs and position of the vasculature.

Extradural sacrococcygeal subcutaneous ependymoma misdiagnosed as pilonidal disease: case report and review of the literature.

Ependymoma is a type of glial tumor that arises from the ependymal lining of the ventricular system of the central nervous system. These tumors may present as a rare extraspinal variety at the sacrococcygeal region, and may be misdiagnosed as pilonidal disease in the post-sacral area or present with mass-effect symptoms on the bowel or bladder in the pre-sacral region. This is a case of soft tissue swelling at the post-sacral area that, after clinical examination, was diagnosed as pilonidal disease. Surgical excision and pathologic examination revealed a subcutaneous sacrococcygeal ependymoma.

Prenatal MRI diagnosis and outcomes of abdominal or sacrococcygeal teratomas and parasitic fetuses.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the MRI findings of fetal abdominal or sacrococcygeal teratomas and parasitic fetuses and analyze the outcomes on the basis of follow-up assessments. METHODS: The MRI data of 60 cases of abdominal or sacrococcygeal masses were examined. The outcomes were followed up and compared with the prenatal MRI diagnoses. RESULTS: The 60 cases included 52 cases of sacrococcygeal teratomas and eight cases of abdominal lesions. The common types of sacrococcygeal teratomas were type I (21/52, 40.4%) and type II (20/52, 38.5%); type III sacrococcygeal teratomas were rarer (8/52, 1

Oropharyngeal teratoma: A case presentation and review of literature.

Teratomas are true neoplasms derived from the three germ layers. They are relatively rare tumours. They present in the sacrococcygeal region, gonads and retroperitoneum commonly. We present the report of a 5-month-old infant who presented with a prolapsing oropharyngeal teratoma and literature review.

Ultrasound-guided sacral multifidus plane block for analgesia following excision of sacrococcygeal teratoma in two neonates.

Peri-operative pain management in the neonate with a sacrococcygeal teratoma poses significant challenges to the anaesthetist. Involvement of the sacrococcygeal area by the tumour often prevents the use of conventional regional anaesthetic techniques such as caudal or epidural analgesia, with a subsequent reliance on intravenous opioids and paracetamol. Since opioids are associated with respiratory depression, constipation and urinary retention, there is high incidence of opiophobia with consequent inappropriate dosage prescription, particularly in the paediatric population. We describe the us

Gastroschisis with extracorporeal liver and stomach associated with sacrococcygeal teratoma and limb abnormalities.

Gastroschisis is the herniation of abdominal viscera through a paramedian abdominal wall fusion defect without involvement of the umbilical cord. Evisceration usually contains intestinal loops and has no surrounding membrane. Rarely, herniation of other major viscera such as stomach and liver occurs, which makes the prognosis worse. Gastroschisis is usually not associated with sacrococcygeal teratoma. In the present report, a very rare case of gastroschisis associated with sacrococcygeal teratoma is described. The gastroschisis had complete evisceration of the stomach, bowel and extracorporeal

Sacrococcygeal teratoma in Northeastern Nigeria: 18-years experience.

Although sacrococcygeal teratomas are rare, there have been several reports from various parts of Nigeria, outside the Northeast region. This report reviews the experience with this tumour from the northeastern part of Nigeria. A retrospective study of 21 children with histologically confirmed sacrococcygeal teratoma managed in 18 years. Over the 18-year-period, 21 histologically confirmed cases of sacrococcygeal teratoma were seen-80% were girls. Thirteen (60.9%) presented during the neonatal period. Eighteen patients presented with benign sacrococcygeal teratoma while three patients and a re

Comparative experimental anesthesia efficacy study of epidural injection at the sacrococcygeal space using ultrasound guidance versus blindness technique in Egyptian donkeys (Equus asinus).

The study investigates the effectiveness of blind and ultrasound-guided epidural injections in Egyptian donkeys in the sacrococcygeal region, a topic of limited research, by comparing and assessing their onset in 20 healthy adult donkeys of both sexes. In the first group, we used ten cadaver donkeys that were humanely euthanized. In the second group, we used 10 live, healthy adult donkeys to assess the efficacy and time of analgesia onset for blind and ultrasound-guided epidural injections at the sacrococcygeal region. Cadavers were randomly designated to blind (n = 5) or US-guided (n = 5) epi

Human body dynamics simulation and comfort evaluation of interhospital transport patients with different road conditions.

Road unevenness has a significant impact on the comfort of patients during interhospital transport. Vibration is easy to cause dizziness, palpitation, tension, restlessness and other symptoms, and even cause secondary injuries to patients. Therefore, it is very important to analyze the vibration characteristics of human body and take care of vibration reduction. In this paper, the finite element technology, dynamic theory and experimental method are used to establish a "human-vehicle-road" coupling dynamic model, and the human dynamic response under different road conditions is simulated and a

[Chinese clinical practice guidelines for standardized diagnosis and treatment of presacral cysts (2026 edition)].

Presacral cysts are rare cystic or cystic-solid masses located between the sacrococcygeal bone and the rectum, and complete surgical resection is the only curative treatment. Due to the complex anatomy of the presacral region, which is adjacent to the rectum, sacrum, and important vessels and nerves, surgical procedures are technically demanding and carry high-risk. Inappropriate surgical approaches and management often lead to complications such as residual cyst wall, recurrence, massive hemorrhage, and pelvic floor dysfunction. To further enhance the clinical understanding of presacral cysts

[Subcutaneous myxopapillary ependymoma].

Subcutaneous myxopapillary ependymoma is a very rare entity, and to our knowledge this is the first published case from Denmark. A previously healthy 32-year-old male presented with subcutaneous swelling and tenderness located at the top of the intergluteal cleft. The circular soft tumour, measuring 1.7 × 1.7 × 1.2 cm, was removed surgically. After histopathological examination with several immunohistochemical and special stainings, the diagnosis surprisingly was subcutaneous myxopapillary ependymoma. The tumour was removed with free margins and no metastases were found on follow-up CT- and MR
