Isoimmunizations among marmosets to identify leucocyte antigens.

Saguinus fuscicollis ssp., S.o. oedipus, and S. nigricollis marmosets were immunized with white blood cells (WBC) from S.f. illigeri marmosets. Of the three genetic donor-host combinations attempted, only an interspecies immunization of S.o oedipus marmosets resulted in antibody formation which was detectable by agglutination or cytotoxicity tests. Analysis of one of the antisera with a panel of WBC from S.f. illigeri marmosets indicated varying specificities, reactions ranging from strong, intermediate, to completely negative. That the serum was detecting genotypic as well as phenotypic marke

Preliminary observations on habitat utilization and diet in eight Surinam Monkeys.

The eight monkey species occurring in Surinam were studied in the Raleigh-vallen-Voltzberg Nature Reserve along the Coppename River. Special emphasis was placed on determining how these eight species divide up available habitat and food resources within a 300-ha study area. Cebus apella apella is probably the most adaptable of the Surinam monkeys. It was found mainly in the understory and lower to middle parts of the canopy of all five forest types (high rain forest, low rain forest, mountain savanna forest, liane forest, pina swamp forest) in the study area, and entered a variety of edge habi

Quantitative molecular assessment of chimerism across tissues in marmosets and tamarins.

BACKGROUND: Marmosets are playing an increasingly large and important role in biomedical research. They share genetic, anatomical, and physiological similarities with humans and other primate model species, but their smaller sizes, reproductive efficiency, and amenability to genetic manipulation offer an added practicality. While their unique biology can be exploited to provide insights into disease and function, it is also important that researchers are aware of the differences that exist between marmosets and other species. The New World monkey family Callitrichidae, containing both marmoset

Callitrichid nutrition and food sensitivity.

Captive callitrichids are prone to developing intestinal problems. Their captive and natural diets differ enormously, and diet has been suggested to play a major role in wasting marmoset syndrome. Proteins in wheat, soy and milk are included in callitrichid diets of most colonies and have been linked to an immune reaction in Saguinus oedipus and Callithrix jacchus. In the present study of 23 males and females of the two species, wheat protein was tested but soy and milk products were excluded. One group had wheat and the other had rice in their diet. Blood samples and biopsies from the colon w

Pathology and immunohistochemistry of callitrichid hepatitis, an emerging disease of captive New World primates caused by lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus.

Callitrichid hepatitis is an arenavirus infection that recently emerged as a highly fatal disease of New World primates in the Callitrichidae family. As we previously reported, these primates develop hepatitis after contact with mice that are infected with variants of LCMV (LVMCCH), recently determined to have 86% identity with GC-P gene of the Armstrong and Western strains of LCMV. Here, we describe the histopathological lesions and tissue localization of viral antigens in confirmed cases of callitrichid hepatitis from recent outbreaks in two U.S. zoos. The liver in marmosets and tamarins wit

Fatal Angiostrongylus dujardini infection in callitrichid monkeys and suricates in an Italian zoological garden.

This paper reports four fatal cases of metastrongylid nematode Angiostrongylus dujardini infection observed in a Saguinus oedipus and a Callimico goeldii monkey and in two suricates (Suricata suricatta). All animals were kept in captivity in a zoo of central Italy. The two monkeys died with no premonitory signs, while the two-month-old suricates showed malaise, anorexia and tachypnea for a few days prior to death. Cardiomegaly and/or granulomatous pneumonia were the major anatomo-pathological findings. Inflammatory lesions were observed in the liver, heart and kidney of the suricates at histol

Salivary gland neoplasms in non-human primates: A case series and brief literature review.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland neoplasms are rare in non-human primates. METHODS: Thirty-five years of pathology records were reviewed at the Southwest (SNPRC) and Yerkes (YNPRC) National Primate Research Centers. An in-depth literature search for salivary gland neoplasms in non-human primates was performed. RESULTS: Seventeen salivary gland neoplasms (nine from SNPRC and YNPRC, eight from published literature) were identified. There were seven malignant, nine benign, and one of undetermined behavior identified in eight rhesus macaques, six baboons, a chimpanzee, a bonnet macaque, and a moustach

Serous cells in the parotid glands of two species of tamarins: polarized secretory granules.

The parotid glands of two species of tamarins were examined by electron microscopy. Endpiece cells are typical in appearance, with an extensive rough endoplasmic reticulum, prominent Golgi apparatuses, and numerous serous granules. In the saddleback tamarin, the secretory granules contain a dense spherule pressed against the inner aspect of the limiting membrane, leading to a surface bulge. During the course of merocrine secretion (a form of exocytosis), such morphologically polarized granules approach the luminal plasma membranes with the bulge in the vanguard. It is these protuberances that

[Chromosomal aberrations in a subfertile cotton-top tamarin].

The present case report describes a female cotton-top tamarin which was taken over by the Zoo Basel to form a new breeding pair. The animal demonstrated increased marking behavior without any obvious medical reasons, dominant behavior, failure to become pregnant and its external genitals were ambiguous. A disorder of the sexual development (DSD) was suspected by the zoo veterinarians and in a first step, the chromosomes of the monkey were analyzed. Six cell lines with different karyotypes were observed. The two most frequent cell lines had a 46,XX or a 46,XY karyotype which are normal chromoso

An analysis of the association of gastroenteric lesions with chronic wasting syndrome of marmosets.

Retrospective pathology data from necropsies of 162 marmosets, Saguinus oedipus, were studied to determine the nature of chronic wasting syndrome, a poorly defined entity associated with a high mortality rate in many marmoset colonies. Paraffin sections of the gastroenteric organs of 116 of these marmosets were re-examined in detail; lesions were identified, quantitated, and analyzed with a method of multiple chi-square testing for possible associations between findings. Five distinct disease entities were identified: prosthenorchosis, amebiasis, paramyxovirus disease, sepsis, and chronic coli

Corpus callosum in sexually dimorphic and nondimorphic primates.

The midsagittal area and other morphological measures were taken on the corpus callosum of four different species of primate: Macaca mulatta, M. fascicularis, Callithrix jacchus, and Saguinus oedipus. The first two species are strongly dimorphic, whereas the New World forms show little dimorphism with regard to overall body size, canines, and brain weight. Neither total corpus callosal area (TOTALCC), or other parts of the corpus callosum (CC) showed any significant sexual dimorphism in any of the primate species sampled. Only in M. mulatta did a sexual dimorphism appear to be significant. In

Genomic insights into ESBL-producing Escherichia coli isolated from non-human primates in the Peruvian Amazon.

INTRODUCTION: Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae are on the WHO priority pathogens list because they are associated with high mortality, health-care burden, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a serious problem that threatens global public health and should be addressed through the One Health approach. Non-human primates (NHP) have a high risk of acquiring these antibiotic-resistant bacteria due to their close phylogenetic relationship with humans and increased anthropogenic activities in their natural environments. This study aimed to detect and analyze the g

Riverine barriers and gene flow in Amazonian saddle-back tamarins.

We describe patterns of genotypic and phenotypic variation in saddle-back tamarin (Saguinus fuscicollis) populations along the central and upper Rio Juruá, western Brazilian Amazonia. The genetic data are sequence haplotypes of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene; phenotypic data are pelage colour variants that define sharply demarcated subspecies of this extremely variable tamarin species. We show that gene flow occurs between adjacent subspecies, but that this phenomenon is restricted to the headwater section of the river, which is consistent with expectations from the riverine barrier hypot

Whole-Epiphysis Trabecular Bone in Tamarin Limbs Suggests Effects of Leaping Distance Alongside Non-Biomechanical Factors.

OBJECTIVES: Beyond non-biomechanical factors, the trabecular architecture of long bone epiphyses variably underlies functional adaptations to locomotor behavior. A recent study, characterizing tamarin trabecular bone using traditional metrics derived from Volumes of Interest (VOIs), identified a preliminary relationship with leaping distance. We hypothesized that quantifying trabecular topological indices from whole epiphyses in the same system would enhance detection of locomotor signals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed μCT scans of humeral and tibial whole-epiphyseal trabecular bone in f

Latent Epstein-Barr virus infection in cottontop tamarins. A possible model for Epstein-Barr virus infection in humans.

The association of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) with a growing number of human malignancies underlines the importance of efforts aimed at preventing the infection with this potential carcinogen and of establishing animal models for human virus-associated tumors. Cottontop tamarins have been used in EBV vaccine studies because virus infection regularly induces lymphomas similar to those seen in human immunocompromised individuals. In recent years, several vaccines based on the gp340/220 envelope protein of EBV have been developed and shown to prevent the development of EBV-associated lymphomas in t

Laparoscopic ovum pick-up (LOPU) in neotropical primates of Amazonia: a post mortem model study.

Neotropical primates from the Amazon are valuable models for biomedical research. However, several species are currently under threat of extinction, which highlights the need for reproductive conservation strategies. Laparoscopic ovum pick-up (LOPU) is a promising technique for oocyte retrieval in wild mammals. This study assessed the feasibility of LOPU in eight cadavers (n = 8) from six neotropical primate species: Alouatta caraya, Ateles marginatus, Plecturocebus pallescens, Cebus albifrons, Saimiri collinsi and Saguinus niger. The ovaries were initially evaluated via ultrasonography to loc

Hysteresis effects in a motor task with cotton-top tamarins (Sanguinus oedipus).

The way human adults grasp an object is influenced by their recent history of motor actions. Previously executed grasps are often more likely to reoccur on subsequent grasps. This type of hysteresis effect has been incorporated into cognitive models of motor planning, suggesting that when planning movements, individuals tend to reuse recently used plans rather than generating new plans from scratch. To the best of our knowledge, the phylogenetic roots of this phenomenon have not been investigated. Here, the authors asked whether 6 cotton-top tamarin monkeys (Saguinus oedipus) would demonstrate

The costs of infant carrying in captive cotton-top tamarins.

Marmosets and tamarins have a communal rearing system in which all group members help to care for the twin infants characteristic of this family of primates. Helpers are likely to incur time and energy costs by contributing to infant care. Predictions that cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus) helpers would change their behavior when carrying infants because of reduced mobility and/or a need for increased vigilance were tested in a captive colony. Tamarins carrying an infant spent significantly less time feeding, foraging, moving, or engaging in social activities such as grooming than they did

A naturally occurring bone-marrow-chimeric primate. I. Integrity of its immune system.

The New World primate species Saguinus oedipus, the cotton-top tamarin, has a high incidence of spontaneously occurring adenocarcinoma of the colon and develops a fatal lymphoproliferative syndrome following infection with various herpes viruses. Some investigators have linked such disease susceptibilities to abnormalities in the immune function of the cotton-top tamarin that may result from the natural bone marrow chimerism that occurs in this species. The present studies were initiated to establish conditions for studying the immune system of these primates and to assess the integrity of thi
