Self-organized hummock-hollow patterns redistribute salinity stress in coastal meadows.

Self-organization theory predicts that ecosystem functioning and resilience can emerge from feedbacks that generate spatial patterns. These emergent properties have commonly been explained by local positive feedbacks that concentrate limiting resources within productive patches. Here, we identify a stress-redistribution feedback underlying self-organized hummock-hollow patterning. Through this feedback, salinity stress is partitioned across the patterned landscape, maintaining vegetated hummocks as low-salinity refugia alongside salt-rich hollows and thereby sustaining ecosystem functioning un

Rhizosphere Bacterial Communities of Two Coastal Halophytes Under Salinity-Flooding Stress.

Soil salinisation and periodic flooding jointly shape coastal wetland ecosystems, but how coexisting halophytes differ in their rhizosphere bacterial communities under these conditions remains insufficiently understood. Here, we investigated rhizosphere bacterial communities associated with Suaeda glauca Bunge and Tamarix chinensis Lour. in saline-alkaline habitats of the Yellow River Delta, China. Twenty quadrat-level rhizosphere samples were collected across four plant-habitat groups, and near-full-length 16S rRNA gene amplicons were sequenced using Pacific Biosciences single-molecule real-t

Effects of Salinity on Gill Ultrastructure of Alligator Gar Atractosteus spatula.

The alligator gar, Atractosteus spatula (Lacépède, 1803), is a euryhaline, bimodal breather, occupying a wide range of habitats. The gills and swim bladder are both respiratory organs, creating a potential trade-off for fish inhabiting saline environments where gills must also be used to facilitate osmo- and ionoregulation. Therefore, to understand whether gill adaptations in alligator gar differ from other euryhaline basal fishes and teleosts, alligator gar were acclimated to fresh water (salinity: 0; n = 5) or saline water (salinity: 20; n = 5) for over 4 weeks and gill ultrastructure and lo

Rhizobacteria-Mediated Plant Resilience to Abiotic Stresses: Drought, Salinity, and Heat.

The frequent occurrence of drought, salinity and heat disasters due to global climate change has become a problem that cannot be ignored and seriously restricts food security and sustainable agricultural development. The role of rhizobacteria in the response of plants to abiotic stress has an important guiding significance in improving plant growth. This paper summarizes the response of plant rhizosphere microbial communities to abiotic stress, analyzes the mechanism by which rhizosphere-related bacteria assist plants to resist abiotic stress, and expounds on the interaction between soil physi

Hydrogen sulfide as a potential translational hub for crop salinity tolerance.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is widely implicated in plants' adaptive responses to salinity, regulating processes ranging from ionic homeostasis to antioxidant defense and is often described as a central signaling hub due to its interaction with core signaling pathways, such as Ca2+, reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide, and phytohormones. However, most evidence remains correlative and relies heavily on pharmacological interventions. This review critically examines the mechanistic gaps, causality, and specificity of H2S-mediated signaling in regulating salinity adaptive responses in plants. We argu

The role of strigolactone in alleviating salinity stress in chili pepper.

Salinity stress can significantly delay plant growth. It can disrupt water and nutrient uptake, reducing crop yields and poor plant health. The use of strigolactone can be an effective technique to overcome this issue. Strigolactone enhances plant growth by promoting root development and improvement in physiological attributes. The current pot study used strigolactone to amend chili under no salinity and salinity stress environments. There were four treatments, i.e., 0, 10µM strigolactone, 20µM strigolactone and 30µM strigolactone. All treatments were applied in four replications following a c

Changes in Larval Oyster Swimming Behavior with Salinity and Larval Age.

AbstractEastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) are sessile, relying on a larval phase to disperse in estuaries. Oyster larval swimming behavior can alter dispersal trajectories and patterns of population connectivity. Experiments were conducted to test how both (1) acclimation time to new environmental conditions and (2) larval swimming behavior change with salinity and larval age. Acclimation time to changes in salinity was longest in lower salinity (6 ppt) and decreased with age. To test changes in behavior with salinity, larvae were placed into four salinities (6, 10, 16, and 22 ppt) where

Fundamental research on selective arsenic removal from high-salinity alkaline wastewater.

The alkaline leaching process of arsenic-containing solid waste discharged during nonferrous metal smelting affords typical high-salinity alkaline arsenic-containing wastewater (HSAW). In this study, for the first time, Me (Ca2+ and Mg2+)-AsO43--OH--H2O and Me (Ca2+ and Mg2+)-AsO43--CO32--H2O systems are studied based on a thermodynamic equilibrium diagram and an arsenic removal experiment, proving that the removal of arsenic using single metal ions in the presence of CO32- is infeasible because of carbonate coprecipitation. Based on this observation, a new method that uses magnesium ammonium

Emerging warriors against salinity in plants: Nitric oxide and hydrogen sulphide.

The agriculture sector is vulnerable to various environmental stresses, which significantly affect plant growth, performance, and development. Abiotic stresses, such as salinity and drought, cause severe losses in crop productivity worldwide. Soil salinity is a major stress suppressing plant development through osmotic stress accompanied by ion toxicity, nutritional imbalance, and oxidative stress. Various defense mechanisms like osmolytes accumulations, activation of stress-induced genes, and transcription factors, production of plant growth hormones, accumulation of antioxidants, and redox d

Does Body Shape in Fundulus Adapt to Variation in Habitat Salinity?

Understanding the ecological pressures that generate variation in body shape is important because body shape profoundly affects physiology and overall fitness. Using Fundulus, a genus of fish that exhibits considerable morphological and physiological variation with evidence of repeated transitions between freshwater and saltwater habitats, we tested whether habitat salinity has influenced the macroevolution of body shape at different stages in development. After accounting for phylogenetic inertia, we find that body shape deviates from the optimal streamlined shape in a manner consistent with

Larval salinity tolerance of two members of the Anopheles funestus group.

The Anopheles funestus group (Diptera: Culicidae) is one of the main species groups involved in malaria transmission in the Afrotropical regions. Basic research into this group has been limited because its members are eurygamic (they tend not to mate in confined spaces), which makes laboratory colonization difficult. Currently, only a few An. funestus Giles colonies are available and no colonies of other members of the group have been established. As information on the larval biology of members of the An. funestus group is limited, the present study aims to determine the effects of different s

Salinity-mediated cyanogenesis in white clover (Trifolium repens) affects trophic interactions.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Increasing soil salinity poses a major plant stress in agro-ecosystems worldwide. Surprisingly little is known about the quantitative effect of elevated salinity on secondary metabolism in many agricultural crops. Such salt-mediated changes in defence-associated compounds may significantly alter the quality of food and forage plants as well as their resistance against pests. In the present study, the effects of soil salinity on cyanogenesis in white clover (Trifolium repens), a forage crop of international importance, are analysed. METHODS: Experimental clonal plants were

Effects of salinity on antibiotic production in sponge-derived Salinispora actinobacteria.

AIMS: To investigate the effects of growth conditions related to marine habitat on antibiotic production in sponge-derived Salinispora actinobacteria. METHODS AND RESULTS: Media with varying salt concentration were used to investigate the effects of salinity in relation to Salinispora growth and rifamycin production. The chemotypic profiles of the model strain Salinispora arenicola M413 was then assessed using metabolomic fingerprints from high-pressure liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) and multivariate data analysis, before extending this approach to two other strai

Effluent organic nitrogen (EON): bioavailability and photochemical and salinity-mediated release.

The goal of this study was to investigate three potential ways that the soluble organic nitrogen (N) fraction of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents, termed effluent organic N (EON), could contribute to coastal eutrophication--direct biological removal, photochemical release of labile compounds, and salinity-mediated release of ammonium (NH4+). Effluents from two WWTPs were used in the experiments. For the bioassays, EON was added to water from four salinities (approximately 0 to 30) collected from the James River (VA) in August 2008, and then concentrations of N and phosphorus compoun

Effect of environmental salinity on sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis settlement success.

The sea louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer, 1837) (Copepoda: Caligidae) is an ectoparasite of salmonid fish. It has earlier been proposed that the free-swimming infectious copepodid stage of L. salmonis gather at river mouths to infect wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. and sea trout S. trutta L. smolts during their seaward migration. This study used aquarium-based methods to investigate the survival, infective ability and behaviour of L. salmonis copepodids exposed to short periods of low salinity levels, such as those encountered at river mouths. Survival of free-swimming copepodids was

Hypertonic saline for bronchiolitis in infants.

QUESTION: Recently, a 1-year-old patient returned from admission in the hospital for bronchiolitis, and the report I received indicated that he was treated with inhaled hypertonic saline, among other treatments. Is this therapy recommended for children in the acute care setting? ANSWER: Bronchiolitis, caused mostly by respiratory syncytial virus, is very common in the winter. It is the most frequent cause of hospitalization in infancy. Several good studies have been conducted in the past decade on the use of nebulized hypertonic saline for bronchiolitis management; however, they offer conflic

World salinization with emphasis on Australia.

Salinization is the accumulation of water-soluble salts in the soil solum or regolith to a level that impacts on agricultural production, environmental health, and economic welfare. Salt-affected soils occur in more than 100 countries of the world with a variety of extents, nature, and properties. No climatic zone in the world is free from salinization, although the general perception is focused on arid and semi-arid regions. Salinization is a complex process involving the movement of salts and water in soils during seasonal cycles and interactions with groundwater. While rainfall, aeolian dep
