Salivary calculi in the pediatric population comprise only 3% of all cases of sialolithiasis. In addition, the presentation of bilateral calculi in children is rare. The formation of stones in the salivary glands has been attributed to slow salivary flow, salivary stagnation and unknown metabolic events. There is no report in the literature of an association between dietary calcium intake and calculi formation. We describe the clinical findings and management in a patient with bilateral sialolithiasis thought to be linked to high dietary calcium intake and review the literature.

Salivary gland calculi account for the most common disease of the salivary glands. Most of the salivary calculi are small in size. Some calculi that reach several centimeters are reported as megaliths or giant calculi in the literature. They may occur in any of the salivary gland ducts but are most common in Wharton's duct and in the submandibular gland. This report presents clinical and radiographical sign of an unusually large sialolith. A patient came with pain in the floor of mouth. There was a swelling on floor of mouth on the left side. Radiographical examination revealed large irregular

We present a case of submandibular duct calculi diagnosed using transoral sonography. Sonography is the first-line imaging modality of salivary gland calculi. However, it is performed via a transcutaneous approach, which is limited in identifying small salivary duct calculi. Using an intraoral transducer, transoral sonography can visualize the submandibular duct and detect the presence of small calculi, thus overcoming the limitations of transcutaneous sonography.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the value of sonography for the diagnosis of salivary gland calculi.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In this study, 82 salivary glands in 79 consecutively registered patients with acute or recurrent parotid or submandibular gland swelling were examined with 7.5-12 MHz linear probes. All sonographic examinations were performed by two experienced radiologists without knowledge of the final diagnosis. The reference standard was digital sialography and sialendoscopy with or without surgery for 54 salivary glands and digital sialography alone for 28 glan

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate cone-beam CT (CBCT) diagnoses of sialoliths in the major salivary glands.
STUDY DESIGN: Twenty-nine CBCT images containing salivary calculi were retrospectively evaluated for image quality and artifact influence. Additionally, the reproducibility of calculus measurement and the differences between CBCT measurements and ultrasonography (US) and histomorphometry (HM) measurements were determined. Diagnostic sensitivity and specificity calculations were based on the observations of 3 masked clinicians, who reviewed a total of 58 CBCT volumes

BACKGROUND: Sialolithiasis is a common disease of salivary glands. The etiology of these calculi is little known and their exact mechanism of formation is unknown.
METHODS: The composition and structure of 21 sialoliths were studied and the composition of the saliva of each corresponding patient was determined (pH, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, citrate and phytate).
RESULTS: Eighteen sialoliths exhibited similar macro and microstructure, being constituted by hydroxyapatite (HAP) and organic matter, normally arranged in a multilayer structure. The three remaining sialoliths were exclusively

Sialolithiasis is one of the most frequent form of calcifications in the maxillofacial area. 0.45% of the population is affected by symptoms caused by salivary calculi, though the estimated frequency including asymptomatic form may exceed 1% in adult population. Radiographs presenting a large portion of the maxillofacial region (panoramic radiography, computed tomography) could detect salivary calculi with high accuracy. The size of the sialoliths is usually less than 10 mm in diameter. Salivary calculi larger than 15 mm (considering the largest diameter) are classified as giant sialoliths and

The present study has established that a flashlamp pumped coumarin dye laser is capable of fragmenting salivary calculi. The refinement of spectroscopic feed-back techniques will allow laser lithotripsy to complement ultrasonic lithotripsy in the non surgical management of salivary calculi.

Sialolithiasis occurs due to the calculous concretion in salivary ducts or glands, but it is rare in childhood. In this paper, a case of sialolithiasis with a submandibular duct calculus observed in a 2-year-old girl is reported. This case is one of the youngest, based on a review of the literature regarding sialolithiasis found in Japan. The retrospective survey was made in 30 cases of sialolithiasis in children under 10 years of age which were reported in the Japanese literature with clear descriptions of age, sex and location. The summaries are as follows: 1) Sex difference: The difference

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To evaluate the long-term outcome of intraoral removal of large submandibular gland calculi.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
METHODS: A retrospective review (1995-2008) of 118 patients with submandibular calculi > or = 10 mm treated by intraoral surgical removal with preservation of the salivary gland.
RESULTS: Calculi were completely removed in 103/118 (87.3%) cases, partially removed in 14/118 (11.9%), with failure to remove any fragments in only 1/118 (0.8%). After a mean follow-up of 42 months, 101/118 (85.6%) cases remained asymptomatic, 17/118 (14.4%)

INTRODUCTION: Sialolithiasis is the most common non-neoplastic salivary gland disease, accounting for 1.2% of the autoptic population. More than 80% of salivary calculi are located in the submandibular ductal system. Hilar calculi are usually removed by transcervical submandibular sialadenectomy. However, intra-oral removal of hilum submandibular calculi is an interesting alternative.
INDICATIONS: The main criterion for intra-oral removal is the calculi palpability, knowing that calculi under 8mm of diameter are often treated by other techniques (sialendoscopy and lithotripsy).

Sialolithiasis is a major cause of salivary gland dysfunction. Chronic sialadenitis promotes stone formation. Conversely the presence of calculi causes chronic sialadenitis. It is clear that the genesis of calculi lies in relative stagnation of a calcium rich saliva. The submandibular gland is a more common site than the parotid, sublingual and other minor salivary glands for calculi formation. This case is presented here because of its unusual size of the wharton's duct stone for its clinical interest.

Salivary gland calculi account for the most common disease of the salivary glands. The majority of sialoliths occur in the submandibular gland or its duct and are a common cause of acute and chronic infections. This case report describes a patient presenting with an unusually large submandibular gland sialolith, the subsequent patient management, the aetiology, diagnosis and various treatment modalities available for management of salivary gland calculi depending on their site and size.

The trend in modern salivary calculi surgery is toward minimally invasive procedures because these benign conditions do not warrant open salivary gland surgery. Since ultrasonography is readily available, highly specific, noninvasive, and cost-effective, we have used an ultrasonography-guided technique for patients with parotid gland calculi, as both a diagnostic and a therapeutic tool for calculi removal, thus avoiding the morbidity of open surgery. We describe a case in which we used this novel technique for the peroral removal of multiple parotid calculi in a 29-year-old man. The use of ult

Patients with salivary calculi are normally managed by removal of the calculus or, if necessary, the affected gland. If it is left untreated, a stone may migrate into the adjacent tissues. We present three patients in whom salivary calculi tracked to the surface of the skin. Two were removed under local anaesthetic, and the third patient was lost to follow up.

Salivary calculi, preponderating in the submaxillary duct, produce distension of the ductile system, as well as pain and fever, when they enlarge sufficiently to obstruct salivary flow. Although calculi may pass spontaneously by eroding into the oral cavity, they must usually be removed surgically under local anesthesia. The device presented simplifies extraction of multiple sialoliths. Soft tissue trauma is minimized, and patient comfort is significantly increased.

The purpose of this paper was to describe the characteristics of salivary calculi and their relationship to epidemiological factors, through a cross-sectional study. We analysed 100 calculi obtained in 2017-2021. Patient data including age, time since onset of symptoms, gland involved, and site of location in the salivary system were studied. The calculi were studied to determine their morphological features using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive plain radiographic analysis. Most of the calculi had formed in the submandibular gland (SG) (82%). The mean age of patients at onse

Sialolithiasis is the formation of calcific concretions within the parenchyma or ductal system of the major or minor salivary glands, but it most commonly affects the submandibular salivary gland. Sialolithiasis usually occurs in adults aged 30 to 60 years and causes pathognomonic pain during meals. The treatment of sialolithiasis depends on the size and location of the calculi. We present two cases of sialolithiasis of the submandibular gland managed via the intraoral and extraoral approaches, depending on the position of the calculi.

Salivary calculi are frequently formed in the submandibular duct. The most common sites are where the duct turns round the distal edge of the mylohyoid, where the duct crosses the lingual nerve, and just distal to the duct orifice. Untreated calculi can cause obstruction and glandular atrophy, and then may exfoliate through the floor of the mouth. An unusual case of cutaneous exfoliation of a salivary gland stone is presented. The importance of early diagnosis and treatment of sialolithiasis are discussed.
