The objective of this study was to assess the genotypic diversity associated with antimicrobial susceptibility of Salmonella serovars isolated from patients arriving with diarrhoea to six hospitals of Tehran, Iran. During 2007-2008, a cross-sectional convenience study was performed. Stool samples were screened for the presence of Salmonella, serotyped, tested for antimicrobial susceptibility using disk diffusion and examined for the presence of relevant resistance genes and integrons by PCR. A total of 1,120 patients were screened for the presence of Salmonella. Out of 71 Salmonella isolates r

Salmonella is a gram-negative, motile, nonsporulating, facultative anaerobic bacillus, belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae. The bacteria were first identified in 1884. It is transmitted through direct contact with an infected person or indirect contact by the consumption of contaminated food and water. More than 2500 serotypes of Salmonella enterica have been identified but less than 100 serotypes are known to cause infections in humans. S. enterica serovar typhi (S. typhi) and S. enterica serovar paratyphi (S. paratyphi A B C) cause enteric fever, whereas nontyphoidal Salmonella serotype

With the advent of high-throughput DNA sequencing, more than 4,000 bacterial genomes have been sequenced and are publicly available. We report a user-friendly web platform, ssGeneFinder Webserver (http://147.8.74.24/ssGeneFinder/), which is updated weekly for the automated pangenomic selection of specific targets for direct PCR detection and the identification of clinically important bacteria without the need of gene sequencing. To apply the ssGeneFinder Webserver for identifying specific targets for Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, we analyzed 11 S. Typhi genomes, generated two specific tar

We carried out a retrospective study of 150 files of patients suffering from typhoid or paratyphoid fever, confirmed bacteriologically, between January 1992 and December 1996 at Libreville. Young adults were the most frequently affected. These infections were associated with unstable living conditions and lack of cleanliness. Neurological (17%), digestive (12%) and cardiovascular (3%) complications were the principal factors aggravating the disease. The following serotypes were identified: Salmonella typhi (47%), S. paratyphi B (25%), S. paratyphi C (20%) and S. paratyphi A (8%). Salmonellosis

Capparis zeylanica Linn (Caparadaceae), a well-known traditional medicinal plant has been used prevalently in the Ayurvedic system of medicine. It has long been used in treating cholera, hemiplegia, pneumonia, helmintic and inflammatory activity. This study aims to investigate the antimicrobial activity of C. zeylanica leaf extracts against pathogenic microorganisms, with the interactions of potential compounds being predicted by a computational approach. Ethyl acetate leaf extracts of C. zeylanica were evaluated for antimicrobial activity using an agar well diffusion method against pathogenic

Outbreaks of infectious diseases repeatedly affected medieval Europe, leaving behind a large number of dead often inhumed in mass graves. Human remains interred in two burial pits from 14th century CE Germany exhibited molecular evidence of Salmonella enterica Paratyphi C (S. Paratyphi C) infection. The pathogen is responsible for paratyphoid fever, which was likely the cause of death for the buried individuals. This finding presented the unique opportunity to conduct a paratyphoid fever association study in a European population. We focused on HLA-DRB1*03:01 that is a known risk allele for en

BACKGROUND: Since protective efficacy of the current typhoid vaccines-oral whole-cell Salmonella Typhi Ty21a and parenteral Vi-capsular polysaccharide preparation-is not optimal, and no vaccines are available against paratyphoid or non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) serotypes, new approaches deserve to be explored. The immunological mechanisms elicited by the two typhoid vaccines are mainly targeted against different structures. We studied whether these vaccines would enhance S. Typhi-specific immune response and cross-reactivity against other Salmonellae, if administered concomitantly.

Indigenous populations of the Americas experienced high mortality rates during the early contact period as a result of infectious diseases, many of which were introduced by Europeans. Most of the pathogenic agents that caused these outbreaks remain unknown. Through the introduction of a new metagenomic analysis tool called MALT, applied here to search for traces of ancient pathogen DNA, we were able to identify Salmonella enterica in individuals buried in an early contact era epidemic cemetery at Teposcolula-Yucundaa, Oaxaca in southern Mexico. This cemetery is linked, based on historical and

Enteric fever is caused by the infection of Gram-negative bacteria, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi and Salmonella enterica serovar Paratyphi (S. Paratyphi) A, B and C, through contaminated food and water. The disease almost exclusively affects the populations living in low- and middle-income countries, with the World Health Organization Southeast Asian Region (WHO SEAR) having the highest endemicity. Despite humans being the sole reservoir of infection and antibiotics and vaccines are made available, the disease was not taken up for elimination until recently due to several biological and t

Although Salmonella enterica serotype Paratyphi B is the less frequently isolated serotype worldwide and in Turkey, it is the most common serotype in our hospital, with a marked increase in 2007. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antibiotic susceptibility and the extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) profile, and molecular epidemiology of S. Paratyphi B isolates detected in our hospital microbiology laboratory. Seventy isolates identified as S. Paratyphi B from 109 Salmonella isolates obtained from clinical specimens from different patients between October 2005 and December 20

Controlled human infection model (CHIM) studies, which involve deliberate exposure of healthy human volunteers to an infectious agent, are recognised as important tools to advance vaccine development. These studies not only facilitate estimates of vaccine efficacy, but also offer an experimental approach to study disease pathogenesis and profile vaccine immunogenicity in a controlled environment, allowing correlation with clinical outcomes. Consequently, the data from CHIMs can be used to identify immunological correlates of protection (CoP), which can help accelerate vaccine development. In t

In 2013, an unusual increase in the number of Salmonella enterica serotype Paratyphi A (Salmonella Paratyphi A) infections was reported in patients in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and in European, American and Japanese travellers returning from Cambodia. Epidemiological investigations did not identify a common source of exposure. To analyse the population structure and genetic diversity of these Salmonella Paratyphi A isolates, we used whole-genome sequencing on 65 isolates collected from 1999 to 2014: 55 from infections acquired in Cambodia and 10 from infections acquired in other countries in Asia,

We report a case of fulminant hepatic failure associated with Salmonella paratyphi A infection, in a 29-year-old patient who was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with fever of two days, headache and vomiting followed by behavioural changes and disorientation. On examination, the patient appeared acutely ill, agitated, confused, and deeply jaundiced. Temperature 38.5 degrees of C, pulse 92/min, blood pressure 130/89 mmHg. Both samples of blood grew S. paratyphi A, which was sensitive to ceftriaxone and ciprofloxacin. Ceftriaxon was administered with high-dose dexamethasone. Two weeks a

Enteric fever caused by Salmonella enterica serovars Typhi and Paratyphi A and, to a lesser extent, S. Paratyphi B and C, remains a significant cause of mortality and morbidity in resource-constrained settings. Typhoid conjugate vaccines (TCVs) protect against S. Typhi but no vaccine to date protects against paratyphoid fever. There are several bivalent S. Typhi/Paratyphi A products in development; however, the low incidence of paratyphoid fever in many settings limits the feasibility of phase 3 efficacy studies. Two bivalent vaccines adding the S. Salmonella is among the most serious of foodborne pathogens worldwide and distributed widely in the natural environment; in addition, it has caused severe medical problems and foodborne diseases. Bacterial biofilm was the multicellular community of microorganisms that attached to nonbiological and biological surfaces. Phages and their derivatives are ideal candidates for replacing and compensating antibiotic resistance problems in the future. In this study, a virulent phage of KM15 was isolated from pig slaughterhouse sump samples in Kunming, China. It belonged to the Siphoviridae family, and
