Non-human primates (NHPs) are reported as exclusive hosts of Trypanosoma minasense, whose transmission cycle remains unknown. We investigated trypanosomatid infections in 194 NHPs of nine species from the Brazilian Southeast region. We evaluated the impact of landscape composition and forest fragmentation on T. minasense infection. In the Atlantic Forest areas, Sapajus nigritus presented a higher positivity for T. minasense on the blood slides (60.9%) compared to Callithrix spp. (24.6%) and Alouatta guariba clamitans (20.7%); molecular analysis revealed higher infection prevalences in S. nigri

Researchers of capuchin monkeys have noted stereotyped body postures, facial expressions, and vocalizations that accompany copulations in this genus. Notable variations in these sexual behaviors are observed across capuchin species. Although several hypotheses exist to explain variation in the duration and vigor of sexual behaviors across species, there is no proposed explanation for variation in the forms of these behaviors. I hypothesized that the forms of sexual behaviors function as recognition signals of conspecific mates. Such signals are adaptive when F1 hybrids exhibit reduced fitness

The morphological constraint hypothesis suggests that primates with less dexterity show more consistent motor planning because there is less flexibility to compensate for inefficient actions. Spiders monkeys offer a unique opportunity to test this hypothesis because they do not have a functional thumb. Colombian spider monkeys (Ateles fusciceps rufiventris, n=8) housed at a wildlife park were tested on a standard motor planning task. A trial began when a dowel baited on one end was placed on an elevated apparatus and ended when a monkey grasped the dowel with the hands. Grip use was coded from

We detected herpes simplex virus 1 in the trigeminal ganglia of trafficked Neotropical primates (1 Aotus azarai; 3 Sapajus macrocephalus) in Peru. Tests also revealed Saimiriine alphaherpesvirus 1 in the trigeminal ganglia of 2 Saimiri sp. monkeys. Our findings suggest latency and raise concerns about diagnostic standards, viral reactivation, and spillover risks.

The anatomy of the dura mater's venous sinuses is important in the veterinary clinical and surgical area, for cranial procedures and interventions of wild animals, in addition to assisting in the management of neurological diseases, which can prevent serious complications. The macroscopic anatomy of the venous sinuses of the dura mater of Alouatta belzebul was studied. Five adult specimens, males and females, were dissected and fixed in 10% formaldehyde solution. In the dura mater of the Alouatta belzebul, nine venous sinuses were observed, being them dorsal sagittal sinus, ventral sagittal si

The Alouatta belzebul is a species of howler monkey, of the Atelidae family and genus Alouatta. It is endemic in Brazil and has a separate geographic distribution, with two populations occurring: in the Amazon and in the Atlantic Forest on the coast of Northeast Brazil. The species is classified as 'vulnerable', and this is mainly justified by hunting, fragmentation and loss of habitat in tropical forests. Regarding the anatomy of this species, information is scarce and in some aspects such as the brain are non-existent. The objective of this study is to describe the macroscopy of the main gro

Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, yellow fever and, more recently, Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and Zika virus (ZIKV) have a great impact in the public health. In addition, the presence of such viruses might have an impact on wild animal conservation as well as their possible role as animal reservoir. Here, we performed a serological survey searching for antibodies against a panel of flaviviruses [ZIKV, Dengue virus (DENV), Yellow Fever virus (YFV), West Nile virus (WNV), Saint Louis Encephalitis virus (SLEV), Ilheus virus (ILHV) and Rocio virus (ROCV)] using plaque reduction neutralization

In Brazil, Plasmodium infections in non-human primates (NHPs) have been associated with P. simium and P. brasilianum, which are morphologically and genetically similar to the human-infecting species P. vivax and P. malariae, respectively. Surveillance and monitoring of wild NHPs are crucial for understanding the distribution of these parasites and assessing the risk of zoonotic transmission. This study aimed to detect the presence of Plasmodium spp. genetic material in Platyrrhini primates from 47 municipalities in the states of Bahia and Minas Gerais. The animals were captured using Tomahawk-

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease that affects humans and warm-blooded animals. This study describes an outbreak of toxoplasmosis in howler monkeys (Alouatta sp.) and survival of capuchins (Sapajus apella), under the same environmental conditions.
METHODS: Howler monkeys were submitted to post-mortem examination. Tissue samples were processed to histopathology and immunohistochemistry to detect lesions and tachyzoites of Toxoplasma gondii. Tissue samples were also frozen and submitted to PCR and genotyping of T. gondii.
RESULTS: Typical lesions were observed in several organs i

Illegal wild animal trade and possession represents a threat to One Health due to the pathogens exchange between wild animals and humans. We report the detection and genomic characterization of a multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli strain (MP02) colonizing a capuchin monkey (Sapajus sp.) rescued from illegal possession. MP02 exhibited ExPEC-related genes, harbored an IncHI2-ST1 plasmid composed of quinolones, aminoglycosides, and sulfonamides resistance genes, besides the extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-encoding gene blaCTX-M-15 located in a conserved Tn3-like transposon. We investigated demographic changes in three primate species (Alouatta guariba, Sapajus nigritus, and Callithrix flaviceps) at the Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural-Feliciano Miguel Abdala, Caratinga, Minas Gerais, Brazil, following a yellow fever outbreak (YFO) by comparing their population sizes before (2015) and after the outbreak (2017-2018), and by monitoring the size, composition, and reproductive status of groups from 2017 to 2021. Comparisons of pre- and post-YFO census data indicate the A. guariba population declined by 86.6%, from an estimated minimum of 522 individuals to 70

We propose a partitioning of the primate intraparietal sulcus (IPS) using immunoarchitectural and connectivity criteria. We studied the immunoarchitecture of the IPS areas in the capuchin monkey using Cat-301 and SMI-32 immunohistochemistry. In addition, we investigated the IPS projections to areas V4, TEO, PO, and MT using retrograde tracer injections in nine hemispheres of seven animals. The pattern and distribution of Cat-301 and SMI-32 immunostaining revealed multiple areas in the IPS, in the adjoining PO cleft and in the annectant gyrus, with differential staining patterns found for areas

Descriptions of new tool-use events are important for understanding how ecological context may drive the evolution of tool use among primate traditions. Here, we report a possible case of the first record of tool use by wild Amazonian capuchin monkeys (Sapajus macrocephalus). The record was made by a camera trap, while we were monitoring caiman nest predation at Mamirauá Reserve in Central Amazonia. An adult individual was registered in a bipedal posture, apparently using a branch as a shovel to dig eggs out of a nest. Caiman eggs are frequently depredated by opportunistic animals, such as the

Botflies (Diptera:Oestridae) are a diverse group of insect parasites that affect various vertebrate species. There are previous reports of myiasis affecting wild primates in Central and South America; however, information about botfly parasitism in Peruvian primates is scarce. We present data from two Cebidae primate specimens: a rescued large-headed capuchin monkey (Sapajus macrocephalus) housed at Taricaya Rescue Center, in Tambopata, Peru, and a free-ranging white-fronted capuchin monkey (Cebus albifrons aequatorialis) inhabiting Cerros de Amotape National Park. The first specimen had a lar

Traumatic injuries are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in free-ranging non-human primates (NHPs), often associated with anthropogenic pressures such as habitat loss, urbanization, and interactions with domestic animals. This study characterized some epidemiological, spatial, and pathological patterns of mechanical traumatic injuries in free-ranging non-human primates from anthropogenically altered areas of the Federal District. Of 696 necropsies performed, 215 cases (30.9%) involved mechanical trauma. Black-tufted marmosets (Callithrix penicillata) were the most affected species (90.2

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic parasite with a great impact on the health of Neotropical primates (NP). The aim of this study was to compare the agreement between the immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT) and the modified agglutination test (MAT) to detect IgG anti-T. gondii antibodies in NP.
METHODS: Convenience serum samples of 77 animals were tested by IFAT and MAT according to standard protocols, and the agreement between results was analyzed using McNemar's χ2 test.
RESULTS: The samples included 30 red-handed howlers (Alouatta belzebul), 24 brown howler monkeys (Alouatta g

BACKGROUND: Non-human primates can present oral diseases. However, differences among the dentition of the various species make it difficult to understand their dental features and associated diseases. This research hypothesizes that the prevalence of dental disorders varies in the species studied according to distinct types of diet.
METHODS: Forty-five syncraniums of the species Alouatta caraya, Alouatta guariba clamitans, Sapajus nigritus, Callithrix jacchus, and Callithrix penicillata were evaluated by visual inspection, magnifying glasses, and on cone-beam computed tomography.
