UNLABELLED: The authors describe the case of a patient with primary monophasic pulmonary synovial sarcoma presenting as a right pleural effusion, and discuss the underlying diagnostic challenges.
LEARNING POINTS: There has been tremendous progress in the diagnosis and management of malignant effusion, with thoracoscopic biopsy of the pleura providing the highest diagnostic yield.Even though advanced techniques such as image-guided biopsy and pleuroscopy have relatively high sensitivity and specificity, in rare cases, the diagnosis can still be missed. In clinical practice, all such techniques

Primary pleuropulmonary synovial sarcoma is extremely rare. The diagnosis can only be made after having eliminated an extrapleuropulmonary localization in the past and at the time of diagnosis. Our presentation is about a 40-year-old woman having a cough and dyspnea since three weeks ago; imaging had showed a left pleurisy with pleuropulmonary process. Histological study of the biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of pleuropulmonary synovial sarcoma. PET-SCAN had not identified any extrathoracic localization. This tumor is known for its aggressive nature and high risk of metastasis. Its primitive ch

Synovial sarcoma is a rare tumour found in soft tissue; it is a mesenchymal spindle cell tumour that is not related to the synovial membrane. This tumour has a low incidence, and the most frequent place of occurrence is the lower extremities in young adults. Synovial sarcoma of the head and neck accounts for 3%-5% of sarcomas in this anatomical region. The tumor in the nasal cavity is less than 1%. The treatment of choice for synovial sarcoma of the head and neck is complete surgical excision of the tumour mass followed by adjuvant radiotherapy.

Synovial sarcoma (SS), a mesenchymal spindle cell tumor, displays variable epithelial differentiation, including glandular formation, and features a specific chromosomal translocation, t(X;18)(p11;q11). SS accounts for 5% to 10% of soft-tissue sarcomas. These tumors occur mostly in the joints, especially near the knee, but they also occur in other locations. Primary intravascular SS (IVSS) are extremely rare; only 6 well-documented cases have been reported in the English literature. We describe a new case of primary IVSS of the superior vena cava (SVC) in a 16-year-old boy. A transthoracic ech

The term synovioma was coined by Smith in 1927, and later in 1936 Knox suggested the name synovial sarcoma. It occurs primarily in the paraarticular regions, usually in close association with tendon sheaths, bursae, and joint capsules. On rare occasions it may be seen in areas without any apparent relationship to synovial structures as in parapharyngeal region or the abdominal cavity. The first description of synovial sarcoma in the head and neck region was by Pack and Ariel in 1950. The majority of these tumors seem to take origin from paravertebral connective tissue spaces and manifest as so

BACKGROUND: Synovial sarcoma (SS) is an aggressive soft-tissue sarcoma with a poor prognosis owing to its resistance to radiation and chemotherapy. Thus, novel therapeutic strategies for SS are urgently required. Anlotinib, a new oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor, is designed to primarily inhibit multi-targets in vasculogenesis and angiogenesis. This study was designed to characterize its antitumor efficacy and possible mechanism in patients with advanced refractory synovial sarcoma.
METHODS: Anlotinib's antitumor effect was evaluated in vivo and vitro. Downstream targets of anlotinib in treatin

Head and neck synovial sarcoma is rare. We report the case of a 71-year-old man who presented with progressive dysphagia, odynophagia, shortness of breath on exertion and hoarseness of voice. Nasendoscopy revealed a smooth, non-fungating, non-ulcerative mass arising from the left lateral pharyngeal wall. CT showed a well-defined, heterogenous enhancing lesion arising from the left pyriform fossa. Initial biopsy taken was inconclusive and patient underwent a transcervical complete excision of the tumour, where histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of monophasic synovial sarcoma of

This report outlines the workup and management of a 55-year-old woman with a synovial sarcoma of the lateral border of the tongue that was initially diagnosed as a glomus tumor. A review was performed of the literature on synovial sarcomas of the oral cavity and current National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines. Synovial sarcomas of the tongue are rare neoplasms, with variable morphologic microscopic types and immunohistochemical profiles. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis of the known gene translocation also can be used in diagnosis. According to the literature, resection of

OBJECTIVE: The present study describes the clinical, radiological and histological features of pharyngeal synovial sarcoma, on the basis of one clinical case, and discusses management.
CASE STUDY: A male patient, aged 27 years, presented with synovial sarcoma of the lateral pharyngeal wall, revealed by pharyngeal discomfort and bloody sputum. CT and MRI showed a partially necrotic tumoral process centered on the upper half of the piriform sinus. Pathologic analysis found a malignant biphasic tumor, suggestive of synovial sarcoma. Partial pharyngolaryngectomy was performed on a lateral approac

Pleural metastasis of synovial sarcoma that originally developed in the soft tissue is a very rare entity. We report here the detailed clinical features of such a case. An asymptomatic 25-year-old female, with a history of a resected synovial sarcoma in her left brachial muscle and pulmonary metastasectomy of the right lung, presented a small nodule in the periphery of the left lung on a routine chest-computed tomography. Exploratory thoracoscopy was then performed. A soft flat red tumor approximately 2 cm in diameter was shown on the pleura of the lingula, mimicking a blood clot on the pleura

Synovial sarcomas are a less common cervical tumor in young patients. We report a 23-year-old man with synovial sarcoma in the submandibular region. T2-weighted MR images demonstrated a mixed-intensity tumor attached to the submandibular gland. T1-weighted MR images revealed a focal area with mildly increased signal intensity, indicating intratumoral hemorrhage. MR images were also useful for visualization of tumor extension. Synovial sarcoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of well-defined inhomogeneous tumors adjacent to the submandibular gland in young adults.

We report a case of synovial sarcoma of the mediastinum, a very rare tumor, in a 50-year-old man hospitalized with anterior chest pain. Chest X-ray and computed tomography (CT) on admission showed a 10 x 8-cm mass in the right anterior mediastinal space, compressing the superior vena cava. A diagnosis of sarcoma was established by a CT-guided percutaneous needle biopsy. Systemic examination revealed no metastasis to the contralateral pleural cavity or other distant organs, and we resected the mediastinal sarcoma. Pathological and immunohistochemical analyses confirmed a diagnosis of monophasic

Synovial sarcoma is a soft tissue sarcoma of unknown histogenesis and occurs predominantly in the lower extremities of young adults. The head and neck is a relative rare location. There are about 10 cases with laryngeal localization in the literature. We present a 24 year-old male with an endolaryngeal mass. Incisional biopsy and the hemilaryngectomy material revealed a biphasic synovial sarcoma. One year later a local recurrence occurred. Tumor excision and neck dissection were performed. Radiotherapy was added. Six months later lung metastases was discovered on thoracic CT. The patient recei

A 36-year-old man presented with a pleural tumor. The first pathologic analysis diagnosed biphasic pleural malignant mesothelioma. However, the atypical clinical course, the early development of lung metastases and a new reading of histologic documents led to the diagnosis of primary pleural synovial sarcoma. The literature review is limited, as only nine other cases have been reported to date. Chest pain is the only constant clinical feature. Misleading interpretation of histologic material is frequent (6 of 10 cases). Only a complete immuno-histochemical study confronted with the clinical co

A case of primary synovial sarcoma of the gastrocolic ligament is reported in a 37-year-old woman. CT showed an encapsulated intraabdominal cystic tumour with an amorphous solid component. Barium studies showed a mass at the gastrocolic ligament which elevated the gastric antrum and displaced the transverse colon downwards. This is the first report of synovial sarcoma formation in the gastrocolic ligament. This tumour may have originated from pluripotential mesenchyme.

OBJECTIVES: Synovial sarcoma (SS) of the abdomen and pelvis is a rare and understudied condition. This study aimed to evaluate survival outcomes, assess calculated versus observed outcomes, and describe radiographic features among patients with localized abdominal/pelvic SS.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 58 patients diagnosed with localized abdominal/pelvic SS between 1992 and 2022 was performed. Overall survival (OS), local recurrence-free survival (LRFS), and metastasis-free survival (MFS) were assessed. Sarculator-predicted 5-year OS and disease-free survival (DFS) were compared

Sarcoma is defined as a tumor located in the thoracic cavity. However, sarcoma can occur on every side of the body. Synovial sarcoma is a rare soft tissue tumor originating from pluripotent with a high malignancy rate. The most common predilection of synovial sarcoma is in the joints. Primary synovial sarcoma of the lung and mediastinum are rare tumors and generally malignant. There are only a few cases have been reported. Definite diagnosis is made by histopathological, immunohistochemistry, and cytogenetic examination. The management strategy for synovial sarcoma requires multimodality treat
