The objective of this review was to investigate the variety of machine learning (ML) methods and their ability to detect individuals at risk of or suffering from sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is a progressive disease characterized by a significant decline in muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance, primarily affecting older adults. PubMed databases were searched from July to August 2024 for trials related to the sarcopenia prognosis and artificial intelligence. The keywords used were "sarcopenia," "artificial intelligence," "machine learning," and "risk factors." Eleven studies were in

Sarcopenia, affecting over 60% of individuals above age 80, represents a critical challenge for aging populations worldwide. Despite formal recognition as a disease by the WHO in 2016, therapeutic approaches remain limited to exercise and nutritional interventions, with no approved pharmacological treatments. Current management strategies follow a universal paradigm that assumes similar pathophysiological mechanisms across all patients, yet clinical outcomes demonstrate marked variability that may reflect fundamental sex-specific differences in muscle-aging biology. This review interrogates se

Valvular heart disease, including calcific or degenerative aortic stenosis (AS), is increasingly prevalent among the older adult population. Over the last few decades, treatment of severe AS has been revolutionised following the development of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Despite improvements in outcomes, older adults with competing comorbidities and geriatric syndromes have suboptimal quality of life outcomes, highlighting the cumulative vulnerability that persists despite valve replacement. Sarcopenia, characterised by loss of muscle strength, mass and function, affects 21%

BACKGROUND: Acute sarcopenia refers to the swift decline in muscle function and mass following acute events such as illness, surgery, trauma, or burns that presents significant challenges in hospitalized older adults.
METHODS: narrative review to describe the mechanisms and management of acute sarcopenia.
RESULTS: The prevalence of acute sarcopenia ranges from 28% to 69%, likely underdiagnosed due to the absence of muscle mass and function assessments in most clinical settings. Systemic inflammation, immune-endocrine dysregulation, and anabolic resistance are identified as key pathophysiolog

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a progressive and generalized disorder of the skeletal musculature that involves the loss of skeletal muscle mass and function. Patients with chronic liver disease frequently have sarcopenia in advanced stages of the disease; however, there is an increased prevalence of sarcopenia not only in liver cirrhosis but also in earlier stages of disease, e.g., in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
RESULTS: Sarcopenia is an independent prognostic risk factor for morbidity and mortality in patients with liver cirrhosis. The pathogenesis of sarcopenia is multifactorial

Sarcopenia is characterized by a generalized loss of muscle function, strength and mass and is codable in Germany since 2018 in the ICD-10-GM (M62.50). For screening in primary care, it is possible to determine muscle function and strength by means of a sarcopenia questionnaire (SARC-F) as a self-filler with 5 questions of restrictions. With an increased score of 4 and higher, an examination of the musculature and a determination of the skeletal muscle mass index should be performed via dual energy X-ray absorption measurement (DXA) or bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA).If hand and/or leg st

Sarcopenia in geriatric patients is often associated with or even caused by changes of the endocrine and nervous system. The multifactorial pathogenesis of sarcopenia and additional multimorbidity in geriatric patients makes it difficult to study distinct pathogenic pathways leading to sarcopenia. Patients suffering from diabetes, Cushing's syndrome, chronic kidney disease, Klinefelter's syndrome or motor neuron diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis for example are known to have impaired muscle property and reduced physical performance. These patients are typically younger and suffer

INTRODUCTION: The loss of muscle mass (MM) is a serious problem which has been demonstrated in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. There are few studies about the loss of MM in patients with spondyloarthritis (Spa).
OBJECTIVE: To assess muscle mass index (MMI) in a cohort of patients with Spa and compare it with a control group of healthy individuals; to verify if a higher risk of sarcopenia is related with disease activity, functional impairment, duration of the illness and radiological damage.
METHODS: Case control study. Muscle mass index (MMI) was determined, from the value of MM, using

The term uraemic myopathy has been used loosely to describe the skeletal muscle abnormalities in uraemic patients. However, it does not fully explain the observed abnormalities as recent research has documented a normal skeletal muscle physiology in the presence of reduced muscle force, selective structural changes and significant muscle wasting. Ageing is associated with sarcopenia (muscle wasting) and an increase in the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD), which accelerates the normal physiological muscle wasting. Similar to sarcopenia, muscle wasting in uraemic patients appears to be

BACKGROUND: Preserved skeletal muscle is essential for the maintenance of healthy bone. Loss of bone mineral density (BMD) and muscle strength, considered a predictor of BMD, have been demonstrated in patients with cirrhosis, but they are poorly studied in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) without cirrhosis. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the prevalence of low BMD and its association with body composition, muscle strength, and nutritional status in CHC.
METHODS: One hundred and four subjects [mean age, 50.5 ± 11.3 years; 75.0% males; 67.3% non-cirrhotic; and 32.7% with compensated cirrhosis] with CHC, pr

Background Sarcopenia and dynapenia are age-related conditions characterized by reductions in skeletal muscle mass and/or muscle strength. Both conditions are associated with functional decline and impaired quality of life in elderly populations. This study investigated the prevalence and clinical characteristics of sarcopenia, pre-sarcopenia, and dynapenia in elderly patients with osteoporosis. Methodology This cross-sectional study included 332 elderly patients with osteoporosis, including 46 men and 286 women. Participants were classified into the following four groups according to skeletal

Background and Objectives: Sarcopenia is a major risk factor for falls in older adults. The 2023 Korean Working Group on Sarcopenia (KWGS) introduced revised definitions, including functional sarcopenia, which considers low strength and performance despite normal muscle mass. This study investigated the prevalence of sarcopenia, severe sarcopenia, and functional sarcopenia using the KWGS criteria and their association with fall risk by sex and fall frequency. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from 2061 community-dwelling Korean adults aged 70-84 years w

To evaluate the prevalence of probable, confirmed, and severe sarcopenia in spondyloarthritis (SpA), according to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2019 (EWGSOP2) definition. A total of 103 patients (51% women) with SpA, mean age 47.1 ± 13.7 years, were included and compared to 103 age- and sex-matched controls. Grip strength was measured by dynamometry. Body composition was assessed by whole-body densitometry. In SpA patients gait speed was measured by the 4-m-distance walk test and quality of life was evaluated with a specific health-related questionnaire for sarcopeni

Sarcopenia and osteoporosis are two common metabolic diseases among the elderly population. Studies have found that there was a mutually reinforcing correlation in the process of their onset. Epidemiological research indicated that the incidence rates of sarcopenia and osteoporosis were positively correlated. Genetic studies have discovered genes that could simultaneously control low bone density and low muscle mass. Cell biology research has found that there were cytokines that act on both muscle cells and bone cells, and changes in their content could directly cause a decrease in muscle mass

BACKGROUND: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) encompasses a heterogeneous group of chronic lung conditions with considerable variability in prognosis and response to treatment. People with reduced muscle mass and function, known as sarcopenia, have a higher risk of mortality and adverse clinical outcomes both in the general population and in other chronic disease states. The importance of sarcopenia across the spectrum of patients with ILD is not well established.
OBJECTIVES: In this narrative review, we explore the prevalence and clinical implications of sarcopenia in patients with ILD, evalua

Sarcopenia is a crucial factor in assessing the nutritional status of chronic liver disease patients and predicting their prognosis and survival. The serum ammonia level is closely associated with sarcopenia regarding ammonia, a key regulator in the liver-muscle axis. In addition, various changes in energy metabolism and hormones are also involved in sarcopenia. The psoas muscle area can represent the overall skeletal muscle mass in liver disease patients. Therefore, measuring the psoas muscle area with computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging is considered an objective and reliable m

A body of literature supports the postulation that a persistent lipid metabolic imbalance causes lipotoxicity, "an abnormal fat storage in the peripheral organs". Hence, lipotoxicity could somewhat explain the process of sarcopenia, an aging-related, gradual, and involuntary decline in skeletal muscle strength and mass associated with several health complications. This review focuses on the recent mechanisms underlying lipotoxicity-related sarcopenia. A vicious cycle occurs between sarcopenia and ectopic fat storage via a complex interplay of mitochondrial dysfunction, pro-inflammatory cytokin

Sarcopenia is a progressive, generalized skeletal muscle disease with the loss of muscle mass and function, associated with adverse outcomes and poor prognosis. Sarcopenia first was regarded as an age-related disorder of older people (primary sarcopenia). Later it turned out that it can also occur in young age due to a range of chronic disorders such as cancer, anorexia or malnutrition (secondary sarcopenia). This paper overviews the pathophysiology of sarcopenia and the factors involved in the muscle mass loss, i.e., physical inactivity, insulin resistance, low-grade chronic inflammation, hep
