Schema therapy for personality disorders in autistic adults: Results of a multiple case series study.

BACKGROUND: To our knowledge, treatment of personality disorder (PD) comorbidity in autistic adults is understudied and is still in its infancy. We investigated the effectiveness of schema therapy (ST) for autistic adults with PD. METHOD: A multiple case series design with 12 adults (aged 19-62 years) was used with baseline, exploration, ST (with cognitive behavioural and experiential techniques) and follow-up conditions. Participants rated dysfunctional core beliefs (primary outcome) weekly during baseline and treatment and monthly during follow-up. Schema modes, general mental health sympto

Psychotherapy for transdiagnostic binge eating: A randomized controlled trial of cognitive-behavioural therapy, appetite-focused cognitive-behavioural therapy, and schema therapy.

Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is the recommended treatment for binge eating, yet many individuals do not recover, and innovative new treatments have been called for. The current study compares traditional CBT with two augmented versions of CBT; schema therapy, which focuses on early life experiences as pivotal in the history of the eating disorder; and appetite-focused CBT, which emphasises the role of recognising and responding to appetite in binge eating. 112 women with transdiagnostic DSM-IV binge eating were randomized to the three therapies. Therapy consisted of weekly sessions for

STAT: schema therapy for addiction treatment, a proposal for the integrative treatment of addictive disorders.

The nature and origins of addictions and of their adjunctive behaviors, as well as their chronicity, call for treatments that conceptualize and treat them as the long-term and complex processes that they are. Addictions are often comorbid with personality problems and with trauma histories. Patients suffering from these disorders often show poor engagement with treatment and high rates of relapse, possibly because available treatments have yet to address the patient suffering from addiction in a more integrated or holistic manner. In particular, comprehensive treatment models for addictive dis

Potential applications of Schema Therapy in the treatment of adolescents with anorexia nervosa: a theoretical analysis.

PURPOSE: The main purpose of the article is to present basic theoretical assumptions on Schema Therapy and its hypothetical application among adolescents suffering with anorexia nervosa. VIEWS: Anorexia nervosa is a very deadly mental disease, more frequently suffered by females than males, with the mean age of onset at approximately 14-15. Studies underline the relatively poor effectiveness of currently applied treatment methods and the need for new approaches that could be recommended for adolescent patients suffering with this disease. The results of studies conducted to date lead to the c

Training Communication Skills and Mentalization in Group Schema Therapy for Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder.

BACKGROUND: This article introduces a structured method for communication skills training within group schema therapy (GST) specifically tailored for individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Patients with BPD often face relational difficulties due to intense emotional responses and maladaptive schema modes, thus creating a need for targeted communication training to promote healthier interpersonal relationships. METHODS: This training approach was developed based on interviews with six experienced schema therapists specialising in GST for BPD. The therapists shared practical in

Schema Therapy for Individuals With Subthreshold Autistic Traits and Recurrent Depressive Disorder: A Case Study.

Schema therapy (ST) is a therapeutic approach to address chronic and complex psychological difficulties. ST is also used to treat mental health problems that individuals on the autism spectrum have. However, no practical reports exist on its application to cases involving subthreshold autistic traits with associated psychological difficulties. This report describes schema therapy for a woman with subthreshold autistic traits and raised in an abusive environment. The intervention was based on schema therapy for individuals on the autism spectrum and consisted of a total of 42 sessions. The effe

Negative cognitive schema modification as mediator of symptom improvement after electroconvulsive therapy in major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a potent option for treatment-resistant major depressive disorder (MDD). Cognitive models of depression posit that negative cognitions and underlying all-or-nothing negative schemas contribute to and perpetuate depressed mood. This study investigates whether ECT can modify negative schemas, potentially via memory reactivation, and whether such changes are related to MDD symptom improvement. METHOD: Seventy-two patients were randomized to either an emotional memory reactivation electroconvulsive therapy (EMR-ECT) or control memory reactivation ele

What Works in Therapy? Patients' Views on Effective Elements of Schema Therapy Versus Treatment as Usual for Cluster-C Personality Disorders.

Although Schema Therapy (ST) shows promise as an intervention for cluster-C personality disorders (PD), little is known about how patients experience ST. This study explored patients' experiences with Individual ST (IST) and Group ST (GST), and exploratively compared these with specialized Treatment As Usual (sTAU). Specifically, we explored patients' experiences with regard to the format (group vs. individual), the therapeutic relationship, specific ST techniques, patients' ability to participate and practical aspects of the protocols. Thirty participants from a multicenter randomized control

Group schema therapy combined with psychomotor therapy for older adults with a personality disorder: an open-label, multicentre, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Although several types of psychotherapy effectively reduce psychological distress associated with personality disorders, randomised controlled trials (RCT) have systematically excluded older patients. We aimed to examine the effectiveness of group schema therapy combined with psychomotor therapy (GST + PMT) in later life compared with treatment as usual (TAU). METHODS: We did an open-label, multicentre, RCT in eight outpatient clinics for geriatric psychiatry in the Netherlands. Adults aged 60 years or older with a full or subthreshold cluster B or C personality disorder according

A Feasibility Study of Group Schema Therapy with Psychomotor Therapy for Older Adults with a Cluster B or C Personality Disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Schema group therapy is an effective treatment for personality disorders, but its focus on cognitive techniques may be a limitation for older adults. This article describes the rationale and initial evaluation of a group schema therapy protocol enriched with psychomotor therapy (GST+PMT) for older adults in geriatric mental health care. METHODS: Within an observational feasibility study, we evaluated the effect of a 26-week GST+PMT program in 19 outpatients aged 60-70 years with a cluster B or C personality disorder on the Young Schema Questionnaire, Schema Mode Inventory and Manc

Schema Therapy for Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review of Individual, Group, and Parent-Based Interventions.

Schema therapy (ST) is an integrative psychotherapy targeting early maladaptive schemas formed in childhood. Recently, ST has been increasingly used to treat emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal difficulties in youth. This review synthesized evidence on ST interventions for individuals aged 5–18 across individual, group, and parent-focused formats. Following PRISMA 2020, a systematic search of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, and Ovid MEDLINE (2000–2025) identified studies using schema therapy or schema-informed interventions with quantitative outcomes from quasi-experimen

Chairwork in schema therapy for patients with borderline personality disorder-A qualitative study of patients' perceptions.

OBJECTIVE: Chairwork is one of the core experiential techniques of Schema Therapy (ST) which is used in the treatment of patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, little is known about how people with BPD experience chairwork. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of patients with BPD with chairwork in ST. METHOD: Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 29 participants with a primary diagnosis of BPD who experienced chairwork as part of their ST treatment. The interview data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. F

Effectiveness of Day Treatment Group Schema Therapy for Personality Disorders: A Multiple Baseline Single-Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Schema therapy is effective for most outpatients with personality disorders (PDs). However, a subgroup does not sufficiently benefit from outpatient programmes. Despite its common clinical use, a thorough evaluation of day treatment group schema therapy (GST) is lacking. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of day treatment GST for patients with PDs. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Negative core beliefs were the primary outcome in a multiple baseline single-case design, measured weekly before and during 30 weeks of day treatment GST. Secondary outcomes included severit

The impact of schema therapy and its basic and mode treatment models for depressive disorders: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: High depression rates persist despite the availability of gold-standard psychological treatments. There is growing research evidence for schema therapy's effectiveness for depression. However, the adoption of schema therapy in clinical practice has outstripped the pace of research. The most recent model of schema therapy (the mode model) is increasingly being used over the basic model because of its experiential techniques and expansion beyond early maladaptive schemas. This systematic review aimed to explore the impact of schema therapy and its treatment models (basic and mode) on
