Mirror movements (MMs) are involuntary movements on one side of the body that mimic voluntary movements on the opposite side. Schizencephaly is an uncommon congenital neuronal migration disorder characterised by the presence of a trans-mantle column of heterotopic grey matter, with or without a full-thickness cleft filled with cerebrospinal fluid, which links the pial surface of the cerebral hemisphere with the ependymal surface of the lateral ventricle. We report a case of a 13-year-old child with unilateral schizencephaly who presented with MMs. Transcranial magnetic stimulation was used to

We report a case of schizencephaly diagnosed prenatally at 23 weeks of gestational age with two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) sonography and fetal brain MRI, confirmed by autopsy. The diagnostic method of choice is 2D transabdominal and transvaginal sonography, whereas additional 3D sonography and MRI may provide a better understanding of the pathology and related findings.

Schizencephaly is an uncommon structural disorder of cerebral cortical development, characterized by congenital clefts spanning the cerebral hemispheres from the pial surface to the lateral ventricles and lined by cortical gray matter. Either an antenatal environmental incident or a genetic origin could be responsible for this lesion which occurs between the third and fourth month of gestation. We report the clinical and cranial imaging features of 30 children, of whom 15 had unilateral and 15 had bilateral lesions. Their ages at the time of the first presentation ranged from 1 month to 10 yea

BACKGROUND: No population-based surveys of porencephaly, schizencephaly, and hydranencephaly have been conducted in Japan or other Asian countries. We performed a neuroepidemiologic analysis to elucidate the incidence of porencephaly, schizencephaly, and hydranencephaly in Miyagi prefecture, Japan, during 2007-2011.
METHODS: We sent inquiry forms in February 2012 to three neonatal intensive care units, 25 divisions of orthopedic surgery in municipal hospitals, 33 divisions of pediatrics including one university hospital, municipal hospitals, pediatric practitioners, and institutions for physi

Schizencephaly is a rare congenital cortical brain malformation defined by unilateral or bilateral clefts of the cerebral hemispheres. These malformations are often associated with medically intractable epilepsy. Surgical solutions include lesionectomy, lobectomy, or hemispherectomy. The authors describe the case of an anatomic hemispherectomy for medically intractable epilepsy in an 8-year-old boy with a large schizencephalic cleft. Seven years prior to his epilepsy surgery, the patient underwent placement of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt for communicating hydrocephalus that resulted in severe

INTRODUCTION: At the present time it is perfectly clear that schizencephaly is an anomaly of neuronal migration and porencephaly is the result of destruction of the cerebral cortex. Schizencephaly is the final result of a variety of lesions which occur during a critical period of the development of the brain. Imaging studies have shown many cerebral anomalies varying from lissencephaly to multicystic encephalomalacia. We report the case of a girl in whom porencephaly was associated with schizencephaly and in whom angioresonance showed hypoplasia of the right middle cerebral artery.

Imaging findings of schizencephaly as well as other neuronal migration anomalies have been well described. We present brain MR images of a 12-year-old boy who had open lip schizencephaly in which the transcerebral cleft extended between the third ventricle and the pial surface of the hemisphere. There were also other accompanying neuronal migration anomalies and corpus callosum agenesis.

Schizencephaly, a disorder of neuronal migration, is rarely discovered in utero. Three cases, detected in utero and followed through the early neonatal period, were assessed with colour-flow Doppler imaging in an attempt to determine whether the clefts were associated with any demonstrable vascular disturbance. The Doppler spectral wave-forms of the fetal and neonatal internal carotid and middle cerebral arteries were normal in two of the cases, whereas the right middle cerebral artery was persistently occluded in the third. Although Doppler imaging was not performed during the first trimester

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Schizencephaly is a rare brain anomaly that is increasingly detected in utero. There are limited data on the etiology and outcomes in fetal schizencephaly to guide work-up and counseling. We aimed to determine the associated imaging findings, etiology, and outcomes in schizencephaly detected in utero.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 22 fetuses with a total of 34 schizencephaly defects identified by keyword search of fetal MRI reports from 1996 to 2022 followed by image review. Follow-up fetal and postnatal imaging, when available, was re

Brain plasticity was investigated in a child with a hemiplegia due to unilateral schizencephaly involving the sensorimotor cortex. This focal lesion led to a dramatic functional reorganization of the undamaged hemisphere, as evidenced by the unusual pattern of fMRI activation during paretic finger movements. The functional relevance of the activation in the undamaged motor cortex was supported by the finding that TMS of this area yielded a response in the paretic hand, indicating that it controls both hands. However, this reorganization was not restricted to the primary motor cortex, but also

The corpus callosum develops from anterior to posterior, starting at the commissural plate of the lamina terminalis. We report a patient with cortical dysplasia and schizencephaly, which apparently interfered with the normal callosal development before 20 gestational weeks. The result was an atypical callosal dysgenesis in which the anterior parts (including anterior body, genu and rostrum) were absent while the remaining parts were developed. This finding suggests that the commissural plate may not be the only region where the corpus callosum starts to develop in some congenital brain malform

The etiology and relationships between different forms of malformations of cortical development are poorly understood. Schizencephaly is generally regarded as unrelated to arachnoid cysts. As part of a systematic study of epilepsy in twins we observed a monozygotic twin pair discordant for temporal lobe epilepsy where the twin with epilepsy had unilateral temporal schizencephaly and periventricular heterotopia. The twin without epilepsy had an arachnoid cyst in the same temporal lobe. Although an incidental association is possible, this observation, together with occasional reports of schizenc

Schizencephaly is a rare congenital central nervous system (CNS) developmental disorder characterized by abnormal cleft extending from the lateral ventricles to the cerebral cortex. Globally, very few cases have been reported in the literature and none from Ghana to the best of our knowledge. Herein, we report a case of schizencephaly in a Ghanaian neonate who presented with suspected ventriculomegaly during a routine antenatal screening. A postnatal ultrasound (US) and computed tomography (CT) scans of the brain revealed a large cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) filled cleft extending from the right

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a congenital connective tissue disorder characterized with multiple bone fractures, short limbs, membranous calvarium with wormian bones, and sometimes blue sclerae. Osteogenesis imperfecta is rarely accompanied by other major malformations. Although associations with microcephaly, congenital heart defects or anencephaly have been reported previously, association with schizencephaly was not found on literature review. We report a case of osteogenesis imperfecta associated with schizencephaly diagnosed at 21 weeks of gestation using 2-dimensional ultrasound. The prese

Schizencephaly is a highly uncommon clinical condition characterized by a diverse range of symptoms stemming from its numerous anatomical manifestations. The disorder is characterized by abnormalities in brain structure resulting from disruptions in neuronal migration. This article presents a case of schizencephaly in an Ethiopian child. The child, displaying delayed walking and speech difficulty since birth, was brought to the pediatric outpatient department for examination. The physical assessment revealed left-sided hemiparesis and an inability to sit without assistance. Subsequent magnetic

CONTEXT: Diabetes mellitus is the most frequent chronic complication in pregnancy and continues to contribute to increased perinatal morbidity and mortality in newborns. Macrosomia, respiratory distress syndrome, metabolic and electrolytic disturbances, and increased rates of congenital structural defects are well-known neonatal complications associated with maternal diabetes, even if well-controlled.
CASE REPORT: A macrosomic infant born from an insulin-dependent mother, with uncontrolled diabetes and lack of adequate prenatal care, prenatally diagnosed with hydrocephaly showed a complicated
