A case of Schizophyllum commune sinusitis following unrelated cord blood transplantation for acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Schizophyllum commune is a globally distributed basidiomycete fungus that is known as a rare cause of sinusitis, for which no prompt treatment has been established. We describe the first report of S. commune sinusitis following unrelated cord blood transplantation for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Thirteen days after transplantation, a 23-year-old female developed maxillary and ethmoid sinusitis. The sinusitis was antimicrobial-resistant, and the sinus aspirate culture revealed white wooly mold, which was identified as S. commune by nucleotide sequencing. The patient was successfully treated w

The definitive diagnostic process and successful treatment for ABPM caused by Schizophyllum commune: a report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Although mucoid impaction of the bronchi (MIB) is a well-known manifestation in allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis (ABPM), when unknown samples or plural eumycetes are cultured from bronchial materials, several problems are encountered which can affect the definitive diagnostic process or successful treatment. CASE SUMMARY: The definitive diagnostic process of two patients [a 58-(Case 1) and a 70-(Case 2) year-old female] with MIB was: 1) to identify the existence of any allergic respiratory disorder, 2) to detect the fungi obtained from bronchial materials, with use of the 28S rDN

[Mucoid impaction of the bronchi caused by Schizophyllum commune which developed after discontinuation of itraconazole administration].

We report the case of a 75-year-old woman with mucoid impaction of the bronchi (MIB) due to Schizophyllum commune who improved with itraconazole (ITCZ) administration and relapsed after discontinuation of the drug. She improved again after readministration of ITCZ, and MIB has not recurred. This patient was not suffering from asthma and has been well without steroid administration. Reports of respiratory disorders due to S. commune have been increasing, and cases of allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis (ABPM), fungus ball, lung abscess, and pneumonia have been reported. Including this report, 12

Epidural abscess caused by Schizophyllum commune: A rare case of rhinogenic cranial complication by a filamentous basidiomycete.

Central nervous system (CNS) infections due to filamentous basidiomycetes are extremely rare. We encountered a case of epidural abscess due to Schizophyllum commune that extended from sinusitis. A 53-year-old Japanese man presented at our hospital with a headache. Computed tomography (CT) of the cranium and sinuses showed ethmoid and sphenoid sinusitis with no intracranial abnormalities. The patient was diagnosed with acute sinusitis and underwent antibiotic treatment. However, the symptoms deteriorated, and the patient came to our hospital again with consciousness disturbance. CT scan of the

Molecular characterization and in vitro antifungal susceptibility profile of Schizophyllum commune, an emerging basidiomycete in bronchopulmonary mycoses.

Schizophyllum commune (n = 30) showed lowest geometric mean MICs of isavuconazole (0.19 μg/ml), itraconazole (0.2 μg/ml), voriconazole (0.24 μg/ml), and amphotericin B (0.29 μg/ml) and high geometric mean MICs of fluconazole (19.39 μg/ml) and flucytosine (17.28 μg/ml). Five cases (of 8) of allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis that were treated with itraconazole had no recrudescence after 6 to 24 months of follow-up. One case each of invasive pulmonary mycosis and fungal ball were treated successfully with voriconazole and itraconazole.

Anti-inflammatory potential of mycoprotein peptides obtained from fermentation of Schizophyllum commune DS1 with young apples.

Fermenting edible filamentous fungi with food industry by-products, such as young apples, shows promise for producing mycoproteins and functional peptides. This study aimed to evaluate the production of mycoprotein by fermenting different edible-grade filamentous fungi using young apples as a substrate. Schizophyllum commune DS1 (DS1) demonstrated significant potential for generating mycoprotein, yielding 33.56 ± 0.82 %. From the hydrolysis of DS1 mycoprotein, three polypeptides were identified with the capacity of inhibiting nitric oxide synthase (iNOS): DNIQGITKPAIR (DR12), SDNAFGGR (SR8), a

Allergic Bronchopulmonary Mycosis Caused by Schizophyllum commune: A Special Interest in Positive Culture of Other Basidiomycetes Fungi.

A 42-year-old man with asthma presented in 2007 with chest infiltration and productive cough. Pycnoporus sanguineus and Perenniporia tephropora were repeatedly isolated from sputum and bronchial washing fluids. Because we lacked immunologic evidence, we could not diagnose him with allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis (ABPM) due to these basidiomycetous fungi. At that time, serum-specific IgE and IgG against Schizophyllum commune findings were negative. Inhaled beclomethasone/salmeterol improved his condition. Seven years later, mucous plugs obtained via bronchoscopy at a relapse were compatible w

Phenolic acids isolated from the fungus Schizophyllum commune exert analgesic activity by inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels.

The present study was designed to search for compounds with analgesic activity from the Schizophyllum commune (SC), which is widely consumed as edible and medicinal mushroom world. Thin layer chromatography (TLC), tosilica gel column chromatography, sephadex LH 20, and reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) were used to isolate and purify compounds from SC. Structural analysis of the isolated compounds was based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The effects of these compounds on voltage-gated sodium (NaV) channels were evaluated using patch clamp. The analgesic activ

A highly acid-tolerant endoglucanase from Schizophyllum commune MA1 enables high-temperature saccharification of pretreated agricultural residues.

Fungi associated with basal stem rot-infected oil palm trees inhabit lignocellulose-rich environments and may provide robust cellulolytic enzymes. This study optimized endoglucanase production by Schizophyllum commune MA1, purified and characterized the enzyme, and preliminarily assessed a partially purified preparation against chemically pretreated agricultural residues. Taguchi screening followed by a central composite design within response surface methodology (RSM) increased carboxymethyl cellulase (CMCase) activity by 150%, from 0.60 to 1.50 U/mL. Eosinophilic plasmacytic conjunctivitis concurrent with gingival fistula caused by Schizophyllum commune in a captive cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus).

We describe for the first time the diagnosis of Schizophyllum commune infection in a captive cheetah. Eosinophilic plasmacytic conjunctivitis was detected histopathologically in a biopsy specimen. Both a second surgical specimen and drainage fluid from a gingival mass and fistula contained fungal hyphae in giant cells with granulomatous inflammation. Allergic S. commune mycosis was suspected at this point. A monokaryotic isolate was characterized morphologically, and then identified genetically. Treatment with itraconazole and pimaricin was effective.

A dual methane production mechanism mediated by enzymatic catalysis and the Fenton reaction in the wood-rotting fungus Schizophyllum commune.

Understanding biological sources of methane is critical for elucidating the global methane cycle and addressing climate change. While traditional research has predominantly focused on prokaryotic methanogens, emerging evidence suggests that eukaryotes, particularly fungi, can produce methane through both enzymatic and non-enzymatic pathways. However, no eukaryotic organism has been documented to possess both pathways simultaneously. Here, we provide preliminary evidence suggesting that the wood-decaying fungus Schizophyllum commune strain 20R-7-F01, isolated from sediment approximately 2 km be

Disseminated and fatal infection by Schizophyllum commune in a harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) kept under human care in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Schizophyllum commune is an environmental basidiomycete increasingly recognized as an opportunistic pathogen in humans and domestic animals, whereas infections in wildlife remain rarely reported. In marine mammals, fungal infections involving the central nervous system and respiratory tract are uncommon and may pose diagnostic challenges. CASE REPORT: A captive 5-year-old female harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) from Brazil developed progressive neurological abnormalities over approximately 11 months, initially characterized by cervical dystonia and head deviation, followed by respirat

A practical protocol for the identification of Schizophyllum commune in fungal cultures of respiratory specimens: A pilot study at a single center in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Although Schizophyllum commune is a common causative fungus of allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis, it is often underrecognized in clinical practice. This is because it rarely forms spores under routine culture conditions, typically appears as white, non-sporulating colonies indistinguishable from other fungi, and is frequently dismissed as a contaminant rather than subjected to molecular identification. To minimize the risk of being overlooked, we established a practical protocol for the identification of S. commune based on its ability to produce hydrogen sulfide. METHODS: To eval

Cisplatin-Induced Nephrotoxicity Attenuation by Schizophyllum commune Through Regulating Mitochondria-Associated Signaling, Apoptosis, Autophagy, and PINK1/Parkin-Mediated Mitophagy.

Associated with high morbidity and mortality, cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common clinical complication characterized by oxidative stress, inflammation, and mitochondria-associated signaling. Although multiple signaling pathways have been implicated in AKI progression, effective interventions targeting these complex mechanisms are still lacking. As a medicinal fungus with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, Schizophyllum commune (SC) has shown potential biological activities; however, its renoprotective effects in cisplatin-induced AKI remain unclear. Therefore, t

Metabolic profiling of bioactive components from Schizophyllum commune Fries in hypercholesterolemic Wistar-Kyoto rats using LC-QTOF-MS analysis.

Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory condition that contributes to myocardial infarction, cardiac arrest and stroke. Current knowledge of mushroom metabolomics in the context of atherosclerosis remains inadequate. Hence, further investigation into the underlying pathways and characterization of metabolites is necessary to establish a significant network for early-stage diagnosis of atherosclerosis. Therefore, the standard phytopreparation of Schizophyllum commune (SPPSC) was administered in hypercholesterolemic-induced rats. Sera were evaluated for lipid profile parameters; hepatic marker enzyme

Impact of Irpex lenis and Schizophyllum commune endophytic fungi on Perilla frutescens: enhancing nutritional uptake, phytochemicals, and antioxidant potential.

BACKGROUND: Endophytic fungi (EF) reside within plants without causing harm and provide benefits such as enhancing nutrients and producing bioactive compounds, which improve the medicinal properties of host plants. Selecting plants with established medicinal properties for studying EF is important, as it allows a deeper understanding of their influence. Therefore, the study aimed to investigate the impact of EF after inoculating the medicinal plant Perilla frutescens, specifically focusing on their role in enhancing medicinal properties. RESULTS: In the current study, the impact of two EF i.e

A case of otitis externa caused by Schizophyllum commune: An approach to antimicrobial stewardship using Gram staining of otorrhea in a medical clinic.

Recently, basidiomycete Schizophyllum commune has been reported as a cause of allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis. However, it is rare as a cause of otitis externa. We experienced a very rare case of otitis externa caused by S. commune in a 68-year-old man with a history of chronic otitis media. We performed Gram staining at the first consultation and follow-up treatment and found fungal cells on the smear and treated him with an appropriate antifungal drug. The results of identification and antifungal susceptibility testing obtained in cooperation with clinical microbiologists at other faciliti
