Nursing student diversity is a priority of the University of North Florida School of Nursing, but faculty members found that the prelicensure track admission process favored students with high grade point averages (GPAs) and eliminated many potentially good students, including minorities. Adding an interview to the admission process resulted in acceptance of highly qualified students while giving deserving students, including minority students with good but lower GPAs, the opportunity to enter the program. The change in the admission process increased minority admissions from a low of 2% to as

BACKGROUND: Podoconiosis is a preventable, progressive, and non-infectious form of elephantiasis that can contribute to significant disability and economic burden when not treated early. Nurses play a critical role in early detection and response in rural Africa, but it is unclear if they receive adequate training on podoconiosis. We aimed to characterize podoconiosis instruction at all government accredited, post-secondary nursing institutions in three African countries.
METHODS: Data for this cross-sectional study was collected through a quantitative survey with several open-answer question

BACKGROUND: When students with intellectual disability (ID) experience pain, the pain may limit the extent to which they may engage in school activities. Although school nurses are primarily responsible for addressing students' pain, there are many barriers to identifying pain in students with ID.
AIMS: The purpose of the present study was to describe pain assessment practices of school nurses for students with and without ID.
DESIGN: A retrospective review was conducted of 4,660 school health office visit records for elementary school students presenting to the health office with headache,

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a global public health problem with major consequences for the individual child and society. An earlier Swedish study showed that the school nurses did not initially talk about nor mention CSA as one form of child abuse. For the child to receive adequate support, the disclosure is a precondition and is dependent on an available person prepared to listen. The aim of the study was to explore the ability of the school nurses to detect and support sexually abused children. It is a secondary analysis of focus group interviews with school nurses. Thematic analysis was per

This paper deals with research on cooperation with the school nurse described by sixth graders. The data were collected via six focus group interviews in 2003-2004. Twenty-two sixth graders (aged 11-12 years) participated in the research. The data were analysed by the constant comparison method based on grounded theory. The analysis yielded a number of concepts that describe the basis of the cooperation: the trusted expertise of the school nurse, informative interaction with the family and knowing the family situation. The cooperation consisted of supporting the pupil's growth and development,

The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility of a range of strategies to engage and to enhance secondary school nurse involvement in teenage smoking prevention and cessation. School nurses were willing to assist students to quit smoking, but they felt unprepared. Information provided by nurses involved in a three-stage review, pilot-testing, and trial design resulted in the development of a resource for nurses. This resource comprised individual student approaches (brief intervention based on motivational interviewing and written activities designed to help students examine their s

BACKGROUND: This study examined nurse faculty members' teaching, scholarship, and professional development interests across Southeastern Conference (SEC) nursing schools, and evaluated differences in these needs associated with years in academia, tenure status, faculty rank, and Accountable Health Communities (AHC) versus non-AHC settings.
METHOD: Rosenthal and Stanberry's framework for faculty development provided the theoretical foundation for this cross-sectional study to explore topics of interests of faculty at 12 SEC nursing schools.
RESULTS: A total of 470 faculty responded to the onl

OBJECTIVES: Many children with epilepsy experience seizures at school. School nurses must have the clinical expertise to deliver high-quality, safe care for students with epilepsy. However, in some regions of the U.S. access to interactive, epilepsy evidence-based education programs is limited. The objective of this project was to assess the feasibility of adapting the Epilepsy Foundation's (EFs) school nurse education program to the ECHO model and evaluate its impact on school nurse knowledge and self-efficacy in managing epilepsy in students with seizures and program satisfaction.

Schoolchildren with sickle cell disease (SCD) experience physiologic and psychologic stress that can affect school functioning, mental well-being, and physical health. Student needs are unique and individualized; however, school nurses can support students and families with SCD through comprehensive and thorough care planning efforts. In addition to components specific to individual prescriptions and other nonpharmacological therapies, school nurses should consider school access and inclusion, pain management, racism, and disease self-management when care planning. As a healthcare provider who

Return to learn (RTL) is the individualized process of coordinating cognitive care and reintegration for students into the academic setting after any sport and recreational-related concussion (SRRC). The guidelines for RTL are based on empirical evidence, however, implementation differs by institution. The purpose of the policy analysis is to evaluate RTL guidelines after SRRC of student-athletes in New England secondary school public school systems. A review of the six New England states' policies surrounding RTL was conducted. The Comprehensive Analysis of Physical Activity Framework was ref

Period poverty is increasingly recognized as a public health equity issue, yet limited research has examined the implementation of school-based menstrual health and hygiene programs in the United States. This study investigates Missouri school nurses' perceptions of state government funding for menstrual hygiene products, availability of products in schools, and students' needs related to period poverty. Using a cross-sectional, quantitative design, an electronic survey was emailed to lead school nurses in Missouri public and charter schools from February to March 2024. Those who serve student

Background/Objectives: Alcohol and tobacco use in adolescence are major public health concerns that shape long-term health trajectories and undermine healthy behaviour development. Schools are key settings for health promotion, offering structured environments to foster self-regulation, social skills, and protective behaviours. This scoping review mapped recent school-based educational strategies designed to prevent alcohol and tobacco use among adolescents and to examine whether the included studies reported any involvement of school nurses. Methods: Review followed Arksey and O'Malley's fram

Do graduate record examination (GRE) scores serve as strong predictors of student success in graduate school in nursing, and if so, is the extent to which they may indicate success outweighed by their perceived role as a barrier to application to graduate school in nursing? Academic ability, defined as cumulative grade point average (GPA), was used as the outcome indicator for success in graduate school and was compared with admission GRE scores for 217 students admitted to graduate programs at the University of Washington School of Nursing over a 1-year period. The GRE presented a large barri
