OBJECTIVES: Most basic medical education studies focus on one medical school, and the social and educational significance of differences between schools remains poorly understood. Sociologists have called for more comparative studies and for research on the institutional context of medical education. This paper introduces Bourdieu's concept of 'field' as a tool for conducting such analyses.
CONTEXT: A 'field' is any arena in which there is a struggle over resources (capital), akin to a 'game' between players who occupy different positions depending on the resources they have. Prior studies sh

OBJECTIVE: To assess the extent to which current selection criteria predict success in Sri Lanka's medical schools.
METHODS: The study sample consisted of all students selected to all six medical schools in two consecutive entry cohorts. The aggregate marks of these students at the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level examination, the district of entry, admission category, candidate type (school/private) and gender, were identified as entry point variables. Success in medical school was measured in four ways: the ability to pass the first summative examination and the final e

Between September 1, 1990, and March 31, 1991, 103 of the 142 medical schools in the United States and Canada responded to a questionnaire regarding their services and programs for learning-disabled medical students. Ninety-three schools accepted such students (and ten did not), but only two-thirds had support programs and half lacked the capacity to diagnose learning disability disorders. Twenty-five did not know they could administer licensing examinations in a nonstandard manner, and 19 had no senior administrator or faculty member coordinating learning disability services. The author concl

Among school leavers applying to study medicine in the United Kingdom a majority offer General Certificate of Education, Advanced Level (A-level) examinations as part of the assessment of academic ability. At the time of application, up to 9 months before completing A-level studies, schools are requested to predict the final grades likely to be achieved by the applicant. A total of 5054 A-level predictions from 1661 applicants to a single medical school were compared with the results achieved. Predicted and achieved grades were both high with 93% of predicted grades being A or B. Over half the

BACKGROUND: Social accountability is increasingly integral to medical education, aligning health systems with community needs. Universitas Pattimura's Faculty of Medicine (FMUP) enhances this through a curriculum that prepares graduates for rural and remote (RR) medical practice, exceeding national standards. The impact of this curriculum on graduate readiness in actual work settings remains unassessed.
OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to capture the perspectives of FMUP medical graduates in a rural-centric curriculum, focusing on the teaching and learning opportunities afforded to them du

BACKGROUND: In the academic year 2020/21, alterations were introduced in the admission procedures for medical studies, particularly within the selection quota (AdH). These changes reduced the significance of school-leaving grades (the Abitur) in favor of the Test for Medical Studies (TMS) and considerations of professional training & voluntary service as non-cognitive criteria. The waiting time regulation (WQ) was replaced by a "Special Aptitude Quota" (ZEQ), where experienced professionals were classified based on TMS results. This article examines whether and how those changes have influence

Musculoskeletal disorders account for a significant portion of healthcare consultations in the UK, yet orthopaedics remains markedly underrepresented in medical school curricula. This disparity limits students' clinical exposure, practical experience, and research opportunities, contributing to reduced interest in orthopaedic careers and exacerbating workforce shortages. This article explores the current limitations of orthopaedic education, highlighting the consequences for patient care and future workforce planning. It proposes a multifaceted reform strategy that includes simulation-based le

INTRODUCTION: Female physicians experience high rates of infertility and report barriers to accessing treatment, including lack of health insurance coverage and limited knowledge of available benefits. Given the extended duration of training, medical school may be an optimal time for fertility preservation or treatment. However, whether medical schools provide information or coverage for these services in unclear. This study aimed to assess (1) whether US medical school websites provide information on health insurance coverage for fertility preservation and treatment and (2) whether medical sc

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pass/fail preclinical grading is associated with improved student well-being. Studies do not demonstrate differences in United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) scores after adopting pass/fail grading, but were conducted at unrepresentative, highly selective institutions, and average scores increased overall during the study periods. We investigated the effect of preclinical grading on USMLE scores across 96 US medical schools.
METHODS: Preclinical grading systems were identified with the 2017 Association of American Medical Colleges Medical School Admiss

Analysis of the names of students from London medical schools taking their final examinations in June 1982, 1983 and 1984 has revealed that racial and sexual discrimination operate when students are selected for medical education. On the basis of name the ratios of European to African, Asian or Arabic students vary significantly between the two extreme schools (P less than 0.01), and for any school the proportion tends to be consistent from year to year. Differences also occur between the proportion of females at each school. Furthermore, the pattern of racial and sexual discrimination at each

We live in a world of incredible linguistic diversity; nearly 7000 languages are spoken globally and at least 350 are spoken in the United States. Language-concordant care enhances trust between patients and physicians, optimizes health outcomes, and advances health equity for diverse populations. However, historical and contemporary trauma have impaired trust between communities of color, including immigrants with limited English proficiency, and physicians in the U.S. Threats to informed consent among patients with limited English proficiency persist today. Language concordance has been show
