OBJECTIVES: To determine limited joint mobility (LJM) of the hand in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc).
METHODS: LJM was evaluated with "prayer sign" and "tabletop sign" tests. LJM staging was done by Rosenbloom classification method. LJM (+) and LJM (-) patients were compared in terms of demographic findings (gender, age and duration of disease), laboratory results (ESR, CRP, anti-nuclear antibody (ANA), anti-topoisomerase I and anti-centromere), and modified Rodnan skin score (mRss) results.
RESULTS: In our study, a total of 217 patients, including 113 patients with a diagnosis of SSc

Localized scleroderma (LS, morphea, limited scleroderma, focal scleroderma) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by a progressive damage to the connective tissue with a predominance of fibrosclerotic disorders in the skin and the subcutaneous tissue. In addition surrounding structures may be affected: fascia, muscle, and bone tissues. This review reflects the current understanding about limited scleroderma, its pathogenesis, diagnosis, new biomarkers, and information about the possibilities of its transition to systemic scleroderma. The following new biomarkers have been identified: g

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound is a useful tool to evaluate and quantify skin lesions. Few studies have assessed the criterion validity of skin ultrasound in systemic sclerosis (SSc). The aims of the study were to investigate skin thickness and stiffness using ultrasound and shear wave elastography (SWE) in SSc and to validate skin ultrasound measurements against histological skin thickness.
METHODS: A total of 22 patients with diffuse cutaneous SSc (dcSSc), 22 with limited cutaneous SSc (lcSSc), and 22 age- and gender-matched healthy controls were enrolled. Skin thickness and stiffness were measured

Scleroderma is a broad term encompassing both localized and systemic sclerosis. Localized scleroderma is a cutaneous limited fibrosis that manifests as plaque morphea, generalized morphea, linear scleroderma, and deep morphea. Systemic scleroderma (sclerosis) can manifest as either limited or diffuse disease. Limited systemic sclerosis is typically preceded by Raynaud's phenomenon, involves cutaneous sclerosis distal to the elbows, with gastrointestinal and pulmonary fibrosis, and anticentromere antibody positivity. Diffuse systemic scleroderma is characterized by simultaneous Raynaud's phenom

Calcinosis is a well-recognized manifestation of systemic sclerosis. Paraspinal or intraspinal calcinosis is rare, with reports of calcinosis involving the cervical, thoracic and lumbar separately, but not together. We now report a case of limited cutaneous scleroderma with extensive paraspinal calcinosis of the cervical and lumbar spine.

Systemic sclerosis, scleroderma (SSc) is a disabling condition that shortens life expectancy. Disease heterogeneity and difficulties separating SSc from SSc-like conditions make classification an important issue. Limited cutaneous and diffuse cutaneous SSc, with different severity and survival, have been recognized for several years as distinct subsets. Some authors have suggested an intermediate cutaneous form with intermediate survival. This issue remains unsettled, however. The technique of capillaroscopy is helpful as an adjunct diagnostic tool to separate idiopathic Raynaud's phenomenon f

Scleroderma is a rare connective tissue disorder with multisystem involvement with unknown and complex etiopathogenesis. Scleroderma is classified based on clinical and serological criteria and can be divided into two forms: localized scleroderma or systemic sclerosis, which can further be classified into limited systemic sclerosis or diffuse systemic sclerosis. There are few cases of aortic aneurysm and left ventricle aneurysm in systemic sclerosis but no such case in limited scleroderma in available literature. Here, we describe a rare case of limited systemic sclerosis with left ventricular

Of 397 systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) patients from the University of Pittsburgh, who had serum determinations of both anti-Scl-70 and anticentromere antibody (ACA), 26% had anti-Scl-70 and 22% had ACA. No patient had both autoantibodies. Weak associations with HLA-DR5 and HLA-DR1 were detected with anti-Scl-70 and ACA, respectively. ACA was found almost exclusively (96%) in patients with limited cutaneous scleroderma (the CREST syndrome variant), but the majority (57%) of patients with limited scleroderma did not have this antibody. Among patients with limited scleroderma, those with ACA mo

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether perifollicular hypopigmentation in systemic sclerosis (SSc) is associated with demographics, distinct clinical features, and autoantibody profiles.
METHODS: Patients with SSc were prospectively enrolled, with a standardized data form used to collect anatomic distribution of perifollicular hypopigmentation. Associations between hypopigmentation and features of SSc were assessed.
RESULTS: Of 179 adult patients with SSc, 36 (20%) patients had perifollicular hypopigmentation. Of these 36 patients, 94% (n = 34) were female and 33% (n = 12) had limited cutaneous SSc

Overlap features with diffuse scleroderma are rare. More commonly, other connective tissue diseases have features usually seen in the systemic involvement of scleroderma. The limited form of scleroderma (CREST) has interesting associations with primary biliary cirrhosis, whereas mixed connective tissue disease evolves toward a scleroderma-like picture with advancing years.

Scleroderma is a rare connective tissue disease of unknown origin. It is characterized by increased collagen deposition leading to fibrosis and degeneration of the skin and sometimes of internal organs. There are two main groups of scleroderma: circumscribed scleroderma and systemic sclerosis. Circumscribed scleroderma is limited to the skin and systemic sclerosis has involvement of internal organs. The main oral manifestation of scleroderma is microstoma, which is a limiting factor in oral selfcare and professional oral health care. A case report is presented of the treatment of a 15-year-old

BACKGROUND: Scleroderma is a systemic rheumatic disorder seen in a wide range of clinical specialties.
AIMS: To establish the prevalence and mortality rates of scleroderma in South Australia (SA), to determine the relative frequency and characteristics of the three principal subsets (diffuse, limited and overlap), and to examine the role of nailfold capillaroscopy in subset identification and implied prognosis.
METHODS: Outpatient and discharge diagnostic indexes from five major teaching hospitals in SA were reviewed between February 1987 and November 1993. A total of 215 patients with scler

The use of immunosuppressants (IS) has dramatically changed the management of autoimmune diseases. In systemic sclerosis (SSc), randomized controlled trials and international recommendations support IS use in patients with rapidly progressive diffuse disease or interstitial lung disease (ILD). However, their role in the limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis (lcSSc) subset remains controversial. This article discusses arguments both in favor of and against the use of IS in lcSSc, integrating clinical evidence, pathophysiological insights, and registry data, while acknowledging the limitations in

OBJECTIVES: To characterize patients with positive anti-topoisomerase I (ATA) in lcSSc.
METHODS: SSc patients enrolled in the EUSTAR cohort with a disease duration of ≤3 years at database entry were considered. We assessed the risk of major organ involvement in the following groups: ATA-lcSSc vs ACA-lcSSc and vs ANA without specificity (ANA)-lcSSc, and ATA-lcSSc vs ATA-dcSSc. Cox regression models with time-dependent covariates were performed with the following outcomes: new-onset interstitial lung disease (ILD), ILD progression [forced vital capacity (FVC) decline ≥10% and ≥5% vs values at I

Previous studies have demonstrated an increased risk of breast cancer among patients with systemic sclerosis (scleroderma). To describe the clinical characteristics of 21 patients with both systemic sclerosis and breast cancer, and compare their risk factors to female scleroderma patients without breast cancer, in a population-based cohort study of South Australia. Subjects with scleroderma and breast cancer were identified from the South Australian Scleroderma Register with cross-linking to the South Australian Cancer Registry, last updated to the end of December 2005. Scleroderma is a rare connective tissue disease that is manifested by cutaneous sclerosis and variable systemic involvement. Two categories of scleroderma are known: systemic sclerosis, characterized by cutaneous sclerosis and visceral involvement, and localized scleroderma or morphea which classically presents benign and self-limited evolution and is confined to the skin and/or underlying tissues. Localized scleroderma is a rare disease of unknown etiology. Recent studies show that the localized form may affect internal organs and have variable morbidity. Treatment should be started very earl

BACKGROUND: Scleroderma is a rare connective tissue disorder characterised by inflammation, vasculopathy and excessive fibrosis. Patients with scleroderma are known to have decreased life expectancy.
AIM: To investigate changes in life expectancy in patients with scleroderma over a 30-year period.
METHODS: Utilising the South Australian Scleroderma Register, deceased patients were identified. We examined changes in age of death and duration of disease in these patients over three time periods: 1985-1994, 1995-2004 and 2005-2015. Analyses of scleroderma subtypes were performed, and comparison
