Scorpion sting and allergic reaction to scorpion venom: A case-based review.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a young patient with scorpion sting (SS) with typical lesions of urticaria besides the local SS clinical picture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic screening of articles dating from 1966 to 2021 was conducted in the main databases. All articles included the association between SS and urticaria. A new case report is added to the published list. RESULTS: The literature search found 5 articles with 29 patients with SS and urticaria/allergic reactions. We performed our analysis by adding our present case, resulting in a total of 30 cases. Most were male, and their ages v

A comparative study of using scorpion antivenom versus scorpion antivenom and prazosin drug for scorpion stings management in Sohag University Hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Scorpion envenomation is a worldwide problem, especially in tropical and subtropical areas like Egypt. Scorpion envenomation is responsible for the high mortality rate all over the world, which makes much research carried out to see the efficacy of other drugs as supportive treatment in addition to antivenom. AIM: To see the efficacy of prazosin drug with scorpion antivenom compared to antivenom alone. METHODS: It is a prospective randomized comparative study between two groups from February 2023 to July 2024. Each group is 50 cases to compare the efficacy of prazosin with antive

[Ischemic stroke following a scorpion sting].

Scorpion envenomation is caused by an accidental scorpion sting. In its severe form, it involves life-threatening respiratory or cardiac damage; it may also cause the neurological severity of systemic manifestations. We report the case of a young 35-year-old woman stung by an Androctonus mauretanicus scorpion, who developed impaired consciousness, hemiplegia and respiratory distress. At admission, the brain computed tomography showed a hypodense area in the right parietal region; the chest radiograph revealed a bilateral alveolar syndrome. Troponin was elevated and hemostasis disorders were pr

Nitroglycerine in scorpion sting with decompensated shock.

This study was designed to examine the effect of nitroglycerine infusion in children hospitalized for scorpion sting with severe myocardial dysfunction and decompensated shock. Children satisfying the inclusion criteria were started on nitroglycerine infusion under hemodynamic monitoring and other supportive measures. The effects of nitroglycerine, including improvement in oxygenation and decrease in pulmonary congestion and liver size were recorded. Seven out of 11 children responded well to nitroglycerine therapy and the clinical response was evident within 30 to 60 minutes. The first parame

Issues in management of scorpion sting in children.

All children admitted to Madina Maternity and Children's Hospital, Saudi Arabia, in 1989 because of scorpion stings (primarily Leiurus quinquestriatus) were studied. Of 96 children studied, 20 suffered either shock, pulmonary oedema or both. These 20 shared characteristic clinical features such as vomiting, priapism and failure to maintain normal temperature and/or blood pressure. The management protocol emphasized fluid restriction and the i.v. administration of venom antitoxin. Doubling the recommended dose did not improve the outcome. Two children died and the rest recovered.

[Spatial distribution of scorpion stings in Ponta Grossa, Paraná State, Brazil].

Among all bites and stings by venomous animals, scorpion stings have increased significantly in urban areas all over Brazil. Considering that Ponta Grossa is the city in Paraná State with the highest incidence of reported scorpion stings, the current study aimed to assess trends in scorpion stings based on notification records and complaints from January 2008 to December 2010. The geographic coordinates of addresses with reported scorpion stings were collected, digitized, and spatialized, resulting in a cartogram of the georeferenced scorpion stings in the city. The incidence coefficients for

Evolution stings: the origin and diversification of scorpion toxin peptide scaffolds.

The episodic nature of natural selection and the accumulation of extreme sequence divergence in venom-encoding genes over long periods of evolutionary time can obscure the signature of positive Darwinian selection. Recognition of the true biocomplexity is further hampered by the limited taxon selection, with easy to obtain or medically important species typically being the subject of intense venom research, relative to the actual taxonomical diversity in nature. This holds true for scorpions, which are one of the most ancient terrestrial venomous animal lineages. The family Buthidae that inclu

Lizard Bite Masquerading as Scorpion Sting Envenomation.

Lizard bite is very infrequent in children. Lizards tend to avoid confrontation. Bites are only inflicted when they are manipulated or when they are cornered and feel threatened. Lizard bites may be frightening but most do not cause serious health problems. The wall lizard or gecko, found in most homes, is not poisonous at all. It only checks insect population. A two-year-old boy was brought with history of lizard bite over right hand when he was trying to capture it. The child had experienced excessive sweating and irritability within two hours of bite. He was treated with supportive care. Pr

Scorpion sting pain: which way to treat?

The objective of reporting this case is to highlight the clinical usefulness of chloroquine in the management of scorpion sting pain with the hope of stimulating interest and research, especially in areas where local anesthetic agents may not be available. In this case reported here, lidocaine failed to provide sustained analgesia for pain relief following scorpion sting. Two milliliters of parenteral chloroquine was injected intradermally around the bite site. Chloroquine provided immediate pain relief within 3 minutes of injection. The pain relief was sustained beyond 24 hours. The use of lo

Ayurvedic approaches to scorpion stings: Historical insights, modern scientific perspectives and challenges.

Scorpion stings are medical emergencies that require immediate attention and are frequently overlooked. Commercial antivenom available only in India is for a single species of venomous scorpion, with significant limitations. Additionally, access to antivenom therapy is limited in rural areas. Examining the ancient Indian traditional medicine, Ayurveda, reveals insights into the underlying mechanisms of scorpion envenomation and potential treatments. Thus, this study examines the Ayurvedic treatment of scorpion stings from a historical and traditional viewpoint and a modern scientific standpoin

Scorpion stings and broken hearts: an underdiagnosed etiology of inverted Takotsubo cardiomyopathy.

INTRODUCTION: Severe cases of scorpion envenomation are commonly characterized by pulmonary oedema and heart failure. One mechanism of this acute heart failure is Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. The inverted type is reported less, and its management remains controversial. CASE REPORTS: We present six patients diagnosed with inverted Takotsubo cardiomyopathy following scorpion envenomation. They were aged 5-55 years and presented with clinical signs of acute heart failure. Echocardiography revealed apical hyperkinesia and basal hypokinesis, consistent with inverted Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Manageme
