Effects of Screen Time Use on Psychological Symptoms in Adolescents Following Concussion.

Excessive screen time (ST) use has been linked to more depressive and anxiety symptoms, whereas moderate use may confer benefits for psychological health in adolescents. However, its role in psychological health following concussion in adolescents remains unclear. This study examined the effects of ST use on depressive and anxiety symptoms in adolescents following concussion. A total of 102 adolescents comprising 62 (mean [standard deviation (SD)] = 15.2 [1.7] years; 45.2% female) within 10 days of a diagnosed concussion, and 40 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (mean age [SD] = 14.99 [1.6

Screen Time at 6 Years Old and Visual Function in Early Adolescence.

Excessive screen time has been linked to adverse health outcomes in children, including vision-related problems such as myopia. However, very few studies have evaluated the effect of moderate screen exposure on the development of visual functions. This study aimed to examine the association between screen time during middle childhood and color discrimination, contrast sensitivity, and short-range visual acuity in 12-year-old children (n = 305) from the mother-child PELAGIE cohort (France) for the whole sample and for boys and girls separately. Visual functions were assessed using the Freiburg

Screen time and childhood overweight/obesity: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Controlling childhood overweight/obesity would help early prevention on children from getting chronic noncommunicable diseases, exposing to screen for long periods may increase the risk of overweight/obesity due to lack of physical activity and tend to intake too much energy, and the relationship between screen time and overweight/obesity is inconsistent. Thus, the object of the present study was to estimate the relationship between screen time and overweight/obesity in children (<18 years) by systematically review prevalence studies. METHODS: We collected data from relevant studi

Evaluation of Children's Screen Viewing Time and Parental Role in Household Context.

Limited screen time has been recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics for all children and no screen time for children under 2 years of age. With the advancement in technology, the prevalence and detrimental effects of excess screen time on children has become a global problem that can lead to health issues such as obesity and other cardiovascular diseases among both adults and children. This article examines the drivers of screen-related sedentary behavior within the home context and reports on parents' attitude in supporting children's associated behavior. The study implemented a mi

Sonography at the time of genetic amniocentesis to screen for fetal malformations.

Obstetric ultrasound performed in conjunction with genetic amniocentesis at 14-18 weeks' gestation identified 16 fetuses with structural malformations among 4781 examinations. The outcomes for these 16 fetuses included 12 terminations, two fetal deaths, one related death six months after birth, and one transient abnormality with no apparent significant sequelae. The ultrasound examination failed to detect at least nine other fetuses with structural malformations. The relatively small size and early stage of development of the fetuses at the time of genetic amniocentesis appears to have contrib

Associations between Parental Social Support and Early Childhood Screen-time in US Children.

Excessive childhood screen-time is associated with adverse lifestyle and mental health outcomes. Studies suggest that social support, perceived assistance from others, can empower parents to manage screen-time; however, it is unclear which sources of support are relevant and whether income influences these associations. We examined whether individual, family, and neighborhood social support are associated with optimal early childhood screen-time. We performed a cross-sectional analysis of children aged 0-5 years from the 2022 National Survey of Children's Health. Using American Academy of Pedi

Excessive screen time exposure leads to dry eyes and inflammatory conjunctivitis in children.

BACKGROUND: The rise in usage of smartphones and digital devices among pediatric population has raised concerns about their eye's health. It is of particular interest in relation to dry eye disease (DED) and inflammatory conjunctivitis. Prolonged screen exposure is linked to reduced blink rates, tear evaporation, and tear break-up time (TBUT), that can lead to ocular discomfort and tear instability. OBJECTIVE: To find association between excessive screen time, dry eye disease, and inflammatory conjunctivitis in children aged 3 to 11 years. METHODS: A cross-sectional correlational study was c

Timing is everything - Choosing the right time to screen the herd for neosporosis.

Neosporosis is a major cause of abortions in cattle, leading to economic losses. As no effective treatment or vaccine is currently available, the only strategy to reduce the impact of neosporosis in endemic herds is implementation of control programs, based on serological surveillance. This study aimed to determine the optimal timing for serological testing. Sera were collected from 132 heifers at three farms at three months intervals, between the ages 5 and 28 months. Neospora serological status and antibody titers were evaluated by IFAT, and by ELISA on the first sampling. The agreement betw

Unpacking Associations between Mood Symptoms and Screen Time in Preadolescents: a Network Analysis.

Mounting evidence highlights the link between screen time and adolescent mood problems. However, there are several shortcomings to the extant literature: (1) this link is underexplored in preadolescents, (2) most existing studies look at mood problems using categorical diagnoses rather than from a symptom-level perspective, despite the heterogeneity within mood disorders, (3) few studies have simultaneously examined the links of mood symptoms with different types of screen time, and (4) family/child-level factors that have shown links to youth psychopathology are not typically considered.
