Vibrio vulnificus endophthalmitis occurring after ingestion of raw seafood.

Ocular Vibrio vulnificus infections are quite rare, and all previously reported cases have been associated with exposure to seafood and seawater. Here, we report a case of endogenous endophthalmitis caused by V. vulnificus, occurring after the ingestion of raw seafood. This case was not associated with any cutaneous or other severe systemic manifestations.

Maternal seafood diet, methylmercury exposure, and neonatal neurologic function.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether neonatal neurologic function is adversely affected by seafood contaminants from maternal diet during pregnancy. STUDY DESIGN: One hundred eighty-two singleton term births were evaluated in the Faeroe Islands, where marine food includes pilot whale. Maternal serum, hair, and milk and umbilical cord blood were analyzed for contaminants. Levels of essential fatty acids, selenium, and thyroid hormones were determined in cord blood. Each infant's neurologic optimality score was determined at 2 weeks of age adjusted for gestational age, and predictors were assessed b

Low levels of munition compounds in commercially-available seafood from the North Sea and Baltic Sea pose limited risk to human seafood consumers.

Relic munitions from World Wars I and II contaminate coastal waters worldwide. Toxic chemicals such as 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) from underwater munitions (munition compounds, MCs) pose a risk to marine ecosystems and potentially human seafood consumers. Uptake of MCs by aquatic organisms and subsequent toxic effects have been shown in laboratory experiments and in field-collected samples of demersal fish and mussels, but the risk to human seafood consumers is not yet clear. Here, we report MC analyses of commercially-available fish from the North and Baltic Seas. Mercury (Hg) was also measu

Prevalence, Antibiotic Resistance, and Control of Pathogenic Shewanella in Seafoods.

Some Shewanella spp. have been classified as emerging pathogens and are a concern for food safety. Species such as Shewanella algae and Shewanella putrefaciens are known to cause soft tissue necrosis and invasive infections from marine exposure. Seafood consumption has been linked to Shewanella illnesses, raising concerns about public health risks. Seafood consumption has been on the rise in recent years due to its reported benefits and overall positive health and nutritional perception of consumers. However, an emerging seafood pathogen, Shewanella spp., threatens the safety of these products

Emergence of the cfr Gene in Vibrio diabolicus of Seafood Origin.

The emergence and transmission of multidrug resistance (MDR) gene cfr have incurred great public health concerns worldwide. Recently, Gram-negative pathogens were found to carry cfr by various mobile elements. Here, we investigated a cfr-positive Vibrio diabolicus isolate by phenotyping and genomic analysis and found cfr in a translocatable structure (IS26-hp-cfr-IS26) among the MDR region in pNV27-cfr-208K, an emerging MDR plasmid in Vibrio species. This study highlights the necessity of surveillance of cfr in bacteria of diverse origins.

Pathogenic vibrios in environmental, seafood and clinical sources in Germany.

Bacteria of the family Vibrionaceae naturally occur in marine and estuarine environments. Only few species of Vibrionaceae are associated with human cases of gastroenteritis, ear and wound infections, caused by ingestion of seafood or contact with Vibrio containing water. Increasing consumption of seafood (fish, fishery products and shellfish) poses a possible source of Vibrio infections in Germany. Additionally, there is a growing concern that abundances of pathogenic vibrios may increase in German coastal waters as a result of e.g. climate change resulting in probably rising surface water te

Impact of seafood and fruit consumption on bone mineral density.

OBJECTIVES: Over the past decade, dietary choices and nutrition have proven to be major modulators of bone mineral density (BMD) in men and women. We investigated environmental determinants, specifically dietary habits, of BMD by using multiple regression models in a rural Chinese population. METHODS: BMDs were measured at the hip and total body in 5848 men and 6207 women, aged 25-64. Dietary and supplemental intakes were assessed by a simple, one-page questionnaire tailored to collect nutritional information from large rural populations. Another questionnaire was used to collect information

Effects of steaming on contaminants of emerging concern levels in seafood.

Seafood consumption is a major route for human exposure to environmental contaminants of emerging concern (CeCs). However, toxicological information about the presence of CeCs in seafood is still insufficient, especially considering the effect of cooking procedures on contaminant levels. This study is one among a few who evaluated the effect of steaming on the levels of different CeCs (toxic elements, PFCs, PAHs, musk fragrances and UV-filters) in commercially relevant seafood in Europe, and estimate the potential risks associated with its consumption for consumers. In most cases, an increase

Seafood-borne parasitic diseases in Australia: are they rare or underdiagnosed?

Australia is a multicultural country surrounded by water where seafood is regularly consumed. Literature suggests that some popular edible fish sold in fish markets may be infected with parasites transmissible to humans (notably, anisakids and other helminths); however the number of reported human cases due to these parasites is low. In this article we critically review topical publications to understand whether the low number of human infection is due to lack of expertise in Australia to identify and diagnose accurately seafood-borne parasitic infections. The risk these parasites pose to huma

Airborne seafood allergens as a cause of occupational allergy and asthma.

Occupational allergy and asthma is a serious adverse health outcome affecting seafood-processing workers. Allergic reactions are directed to two major seafood groups: fish and shellfish, with the latter group comprising crustaceans and molluscs. Several allergenic proteins have been identified in these different groups, but few have been characterised on a molecular level. Parvalbumin appears to be the major fish allergen, while tropomyosin the major crustacean allergen. Other IgE-binding proteins have also been identified in molluscs and other seafood-associated agents (e.g. Anisakis sp), alt

The geography of mercury and PCBs in North Carolina's local seafood.

Mercury and PCBs are used by non-governmental organizations and federal agencies to inform seafood safety recommendations. Pollution dynamics suggest recommendations on the national scale may be too large to be accurate. We tested softshell and hardshell blue crab, white and pink shrimp, oysters, clams, spot, and mullet from fishers in each of the three North Carolina fishery districts. We measured mercury using EPA method 7473 and PCBs using a commercially available ELISA kit. Over 97% of samples were below the Environmental Protection Agency levels of concern for both mercury and PCBs. Mercu

Parental perceptions and dietary adherence in children with seafood allergy.

BACKGROUND: Allergy to seafood (fish, mollusc and crustacean) is increasing and is now a leading cause of food anaphylaxis, but there is only limited data on the impact of seafood allergy on affected children and their families. METHODS: We assessed dietary adherence and perceptions of seafood allergy amongst the parents of 94 children presenting to a specialist allergy clinic with proven seafood allergy, by means of a postal questionnaire and cross-referencing the data obtained to clinical records. RESULTS: One-quarter of parents were unable to correctly recall the dietary advice provided.

Mercury in seafood: mechanisms of accumulation and consequences for consumer health.

Mercury is a largely uncontrollable heavy metal contaminant in that it is globally ubiquitous, and environmentally persistent. The element has the potential for global mobilization following liberation from environmental stores, which can occur as a consequence of either anthropogenic activities or natural processes. Furthermore, organic forms like methylmercury accumulate in biological tissues with an exceptionally long biological half-life, facilitating the magnification of this toxin along trophic food chains. Bioaccumulation is particularly evident in aquatic environments, in which long-li

The role of seafood in foodborne diseases in the United States of America.

In the United States of America, seafood ranked third on the list of products which caused foodborne disease between 1983 and 1992. Outbreaks connected with fish vectors were caused by scombroid, ciguatoxin, bacteria and unknown agents; in shellfish, unknown agents, paralytic shellfish poisoning, Vibrio spp. and other bacteria, followed by hepatitis A virus, were responsible for the outbreaks. At least ten genera of bacterial pathogens have been implicated in seafood-borne diseases. Over the past twenty-five years, bacterial pathogens associated with faecal contamination have represented only

Inhalation of steaming seafood aroma: sudden death in an asthmatic.

A 29-year-old asthmatic with a family history of atopy inhaled a large dose of fumes from sizzling, steaming seafood being served to another client in a restaurant. She immediately developed respiratory distress, loss of consciousness and cyanosis; she also vomited profusely, aspirated and died with 58 min of the onset of symptoms. Autopsy revealed epiglottitis and tracheobronchitis associated with an infiltration by mast cells. The blood IgE was marginally elevated. Death was attributed to upper respiratory airway obstruction due to aspiration of gastric contents, and to bronchospasm followin

Molecular and pathogenic characterization of Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolated from seafood.

Gastroenteritis infections in humans are mainly associated with consumption of Vibrio parahaemolyticus contaminated shellfish, which causes health and economic loss. Virulence factor production, antibiotic resistance profile, and biofilm-forming capacity of Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolates on food and food contact surfaces at 30 °C were investigated to evaluate the antibiotic sensitivity and pathogenic level. Strains of V. parahaemolyticus were isolated from shellfish (e.g., Crassostrea gigas, Venerupis philippinarum, Mytilus coruscus, Anadara kagoshimensis) in Korea. When examined for 17 viru

Consumption, knowledge, and food safety practices of Brazilian seafood consumers.

The present work aimed to evaluate the frequency of seafood consumption by the Brazilian population, the safety practices during seafood handling and preservation as well as to evaluate the consumers' perception on the risks associated with these foods. A total of 962 respondents responded to a survey divided into three parts: demographic and socio-economic profiles, seafood consumption habits, safety practices, and risk perceptions regarding seafood. The survey revealed a low level of perception about seafood safety. The respondents (64-71%) demonstrated a lack of knowledge of the main pathog
