Seaweed floating in the pericardium: a rare case of primary dedifferentiated liposarcoma.

Primary cardiac tumors are uncommon and primary liposarcoma of the pericardium is extremely rare. We describe the case of a 55-year-old Caucasian woman without significant medical history, who presented with 3weeks complain of dyspnea, peripheral edema, and gain weight. Echocardiography revealed a huge pericardial mass confirmed by computed tomography and by magnetic resonance. The lesion was primitive of the pericardium but the surgery was not able to cut it off because of the absence of cleavage planes. Histopathologic analysis detected a dedifferentiated liposarcoma. Mediastinum compression

Effect of seaweed and cholesterol-enriched diets on postprandial lipoproteinaemia in rats.

High postprandial lipaemia increases cardiovascular risk. Algae consumption may affect postprandial lipoproteinaemia. The effects of dietary alga and cholesterol supplementation on postprandial lipaemia and lipoproteinaemia and arylesterase (AE) activity in growing male Wistar rats were tested in the present study. Six groups of ten rats were fed a casein-based diet for 3 weeks. Three of the diets contained 2.4 % cholesterol-raising agent (Chol), while the other three did not (NChol). Seven percentage of the control diets (NChol-C and Chol-C) consisted of a cellulose-wheat starch mix (35:65),

Kinetics of the reduction of hexavalent chromium with the brown seaweed Ecklonia biomass.

The dead biomass of the brown seaweed, Ecklonia sp., is capable of reducing toxic Cr(VI) into less toxic or nontoxic Cr(III). However, little is known about the mechanism of Cr(VI) reduction by the biomass. The objective of this work was to develop a kinetic model for Cr(VI) biosorption, for supporting our mechanism. The reduction rate of Cr(VI) increased with increasing total chromate concentration, [Cr(VI)], and equivalent concentration of organic compounds, [OCs], and decreasing solution pH. It was found that the reduction rate of Cr(VI) was proportional to [Cr(VI)] and [OCs], suggesting th

Life cycle assessment of a European seaweed bioplastic sourced from Southeast Asia.

Plastic pollution poses a significant global environmental challenge. Bioplastics, particularly those derived from sustainable seaweed aquaculture, present a promising opportunity to mitigate this issue. However, the environmental impacts of seaweed bioplastics are still largely unexamined. We conducted a 'cradle-to-grave' life cycle assessment (LCA) of a seaweed bioplastic using data from a British extruded bioplastic company. Seaweed was sourced and processed for polymer extraction initially in Indonesia, before being transported to the United Kingdom for final extrusion processing and sale.

Mechanism of seaweed polyphenols interacting with intestinal flora to regulate blood glucose.

Seaweed polyphenols possess hypoglycemic biological functions, but the specific mechanisms remain unclear, which limits their further application. In this study, the area under the blood glucose curve (AUC) of the fourth-period Porphyra haitanensis polyphenols extract (FPPE)-fed mice was significantly reduced by 17.12 ± 0.87%. Moreover, FPPE exhibited α-glucosidase inhibitory activity at 64.39 ± 4.05%. In vitro fermentation experiments showed that FPPE modulated the composition of the gut microbiota, thereby enhancing the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Analysis of intestinal fl

Harnessing the seaweed holobiont: antibacterial and antioxidant lead compounds from epiphytic microbiota.

Seaweed-associated epiphytic bacteria represent a promising source of bioactive metabolites with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. In this study, 26 culturable epiphytic bacterial isolates were obtained from five marine macroalgae, namely Ulva lactuca, Amphiroa anceps, Halimeda opuntia, Kappaphycus alvarezii, and Sargassum wightii. Preliminary screening using the agar overlay method revealed that six isolates (EB-30, EB-38, EB-42, EB-47, EB-48, and EB-50) exhibited antibacterial activity against at least two pathogenic test strains, accounting for 23% of the total isolates. Comparative Evaluation of Drying-Induced Changes in Selected Edible Brown Seaweed Powders.

This research assessed the impact of oven drying (40°C, 50°C, and 60°C) and freeze-drying on the drying characteristics, nutritional makeup, functional traits, color, and microstructure of Sargassum wightii, Zonaria variegata, and Padina boergesenii. Moisture extraction occurred primarily during the falling-rate phase, and the Midilli-Kucuk model accurately represented the drying kinetics, with high R2 values (0.9965 to 0.9978). Fresh samples had elevated moisture content (79.05 ± 0.55% to 88.02 ± 0.53%), which dropped to below 9% after drying. Freeze-dried samples exhibited the least residual

Origami-geometry-enabled seaweed cultivation for scalable carbon sequestration in open oceans.

Seaweed aquaculture offers a scalable route to food production and marine carbon sequestration, yet expansion into open oceans is limited by strong currents that prevent stable attachment and destroy the low-velocity conditions needed for growth, while nutrient scarcity adds a further constraint. Existing platforms either rely on scarce offshore infrastructure or lack the geometric capacity to regulate local flow. Here we show that origami geometry can reshape local hydrodynamics to create substantially larger suitable growth volumes within a modular shell-core structure that simultaneously pr

Disruption or partitioning? Deep eutectic solvent biphasic systems for integrated seaweed biorefineries.

In this study, a DES-based biphasic system (FABU) was evaluated for the multiproduct extraction of compounds from Saccharina latissima. The system combined a hydrophobic fatty-acid phase (dodecanoic acid-octanoic acid, FA) for fucoxanthin extraction with a hydrophilic betaine-urea-phase (BU) for alginate recovery, together with citric acid pretreatment for fucoidan and mannitol recovery. While fucoxanthin partitioning into the FA phase was limited (41-58 µg g- 1), a substantially higher fucoxanthin concentration (563 ± 8 µg g- 1) was recovered during the subsequent alkaline extraction step. Recent Advances in Research on Inhibitory Effects of Seaweed Extracts Against Parasites.

Parasitic diseases pose a serious threat to the health of humans and the steady development of livestock husbandry. Although there are certain drug-based treatment methods, with the widespread application of drugs, various parasites are gradually developing drug resistance. Natural products are highly favored by researchers due to their characteristics such as low toxicity, multi-target effects, and low risk of drug resistance. The ocean, as the largest treasure trove of biological resources on Earth, has a special ecosystem (high pressure, high salt, and low oxygen). This enables marine organ

Seaweed intake and blood pressure levels in healthy pre-school Japanese children.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined whether dietary factors might affect blood pressure in children. We purposed to investigate whether seaweed intake is associated with blood pressure level among Japanese preschool children. METHODS: The design of the study was cross-sectional and it was conducted in autumn 2006. Subjects were healthy preschoolers aged 3-6 years in Aichi, Japan. Blood pressure and pulse were measured once by an automated sphygmomanometer, which uses oscillometric methods. Dietary data, including seaweed intake, were assessed using 3-day dietary records covering 2 consecuti

Mackerel and Seaweed Burger as a Functional Product for Brain and Cognitive Aging Prevention.

Most world countries are experiencing a remarkable aging process. Meanwhile, 50 million people are affected by Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementia and there is an increasing trend in the incidence of these major health problems. In order to address these, the increasing evidence suggesting the protective effect of dietary interventions against cognitive decline during aging may suggest a response to this challenge. There are nutrients with a neuroprotective effect. However, Western diets are poor in healthy n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs), such as docosahexaenoic acid (DH

The Potency of Seaweed Sulfated Polysaccharides for the Correction of Hemostasis Disorders in COVID-19.

Hemostasis disorders play an important role in the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, and outcome of COVID-19. First of all, the hemostasis system suffers due to a complicated and severe course of COVID-19. A significant number of COVID-19 patients develop signs of hypercoagulability, thrombocytopenia, and hyperfibrinolysis. Patients with severe COVID-19 have a tendency toward thrombotic complications in the venous and arterial systems, which is the leading cause of death in this disease. Despite the success achieved in the treatment of SARS-CoV-2, the search for new effective anticoagulan

In Vivo Evaluation of the Antioxidant Activity and Protective Action of the Seaweed Gracilaria birdiae.

The red seaweed Gracilaria birdiae (GB) is farmed and used as food in northeast Brazil. However, the economic potential of this seaweed has been explored little. To enable direct consumption and/or product diversification from GB, it is necessary to evaluate its effect in vivo. In this study, the food of mice was improved with the addition of GB. After 21 days, the consumption of seaweed reduced the weight gain and blood glucose levels in mice. In addition, it increased the trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity and glutathione reductase and catalase levels compared to those of the control gro

Seaweeds as Preventive Agents for Cardiovascular Diseases: From Nutrients to Functional Foods.

Being naturally enriched in key nutrients and in various health-promoting compounds, seaweeds represent promising candidates for the design of functional foods. Soluble dietary fibers, peptides, phlorotannins, lipids and minerals are macroalgae's major compounds that can hold potential in high-value food products derived from macroalgae, including those directed to the cardiovascular-health promotion. This manuscript revises available reported data focusing the role of diet supplementation of macroalgae, or extracts enriched in bioactive compounds from macroalgae origin, in targeting modifiabl

Sensitivity and Acclimation of Three Canopy-Forming Seaweeds to UVB Radiation and Warming.

Canopy-forming seaweeds, as primary producers and foundation species, provide key ecological services. Their responses to multiple stressors associated with climate change could therefore have important knock-on effects on the functioning of coastal ecosystems. We examined interactive effects of UVB radiation and warming on juveniles of three habitat-forming subtidal seaweeds from Western Australia-Ecklonia radiata, Scytothalia dorycarpa and Sargassum sp. Fronds were incubated for 14 days at 16-30°C with or without UVB radiation and growth, health status, photosynthetic performance, and light

Sustainable Synthesis of Defect-Rich NiO Nanoparticles from Seaweed for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution.

Green synthesis has emerged as a sustainable alternative for preparing nanostructured electrocatalysts using renewable biological resources. In this work, NiO nanoparticles were synthesized using an ethanolic extract of Sargassum sp. as a biogenic mediator, and the influence of calcination temperature (300, 500, and 700 °C) on their physicochemical and electrocatalytic properties was systematically investigated. X-ray diffraction confirmed the formation of NiO cubic phase and showed an increase in crystallite size with increasing calcination temperature. FTIR, Raman, XPS, and EPR analyses reve
