BACKGROUND: Few neurosurgical studies examine the July Effect within elective spinal procedures, and none uses an exact-matched protocol to rigorously account for confounders.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the July Effect in single-level spinal fusions, after coarsened exact matching of the patient cohort on key patient characteristics (including race and comorbid status) known to independently affect neurosurgical outcomes.
METHODS: Two thousand three hundred thirty-eight adult patients who underwent single-level, posterior-only lumbar fusion at a single, multicenter university hospital system wer

Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS), Franceschetti-Zwahlen-Klein, or mandibulofacial dysostosis, is a rare disorder of craniofacial development (incidence of approximately 1:50.000 live births). TCS is relevant to the anaesthetist because it can cause difficulties in airway management. A case report is presented of a 24 year-old woman who was referred to our institution for facial reconstruction surgery in two stages. In both surgeries Airtraq™ was essential for airway management. By presenting this case, it is intended to show that planning, communication and teamwork are indispensable for patien

INTRODUCTION: Scalp and calvarial defects may result from trauma, thermal or electrical burns, resection of benign or malignant tumors, infections or radionecrosis. Reconstruction of large scalp defects is a demanding procedure. The reconstructive "ladder" are applicable to scalp and calvarial defects reconstruction.
CASE OUTLINE: A 68-year-old female was admitted to our clinic due to the nine-day old scalp burn wound, incurred under unclear circumstances. Third degree burn wound affected the left frontal-parietal, temporal and part of the occipital region with carbonification of the whole le

PURPOSE: Anterior cruciate ligament tears and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) are common in young athletes. The modifiable and non-modifiable factors contributing to ACLR failure and reoperation are incompletely understood. The purpose of this study was to determine ACLR failure rates in a physically high-demand population and identify the patient-specific risk factors, including prolonged time between diagnosis and surgical correction, that portend failure.
METHODS: A consecutive series of military service members with ACLR with and without concomitant procedures (meniscus [

OBJECTIVE: Determine what portion of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients with peritoneal metastases (PM) undergoing peritonectomy would have been identified/treated if second-look surgery protocol existed for high-risk primary tumours.
BACKGROUND: The prognosis of CRC PM greatly improves following peritonectomy/HIPEC. Survival remains dependent upon stage of PM and there is some knowledge of high-risk factors for its development. Subsequently, there is interest in routine second-look laparotomy to follow-up high-risk CRC patients so to 'prevent' PM.
METHODS: Patients were retrospectively select

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal abdominal reoperation is difficult and can be complicated by abdominal adhesions. Identifying patients who could safely undergo early reoperation would save TPN and central line days, decrease associated infection and liver injury, and NICU and hospital length of stay. We sought to determine if ultrasound (US) could accurately assess the location and severity of adhesions in neonates as an objective dynamic marker capable of informing reoperation timing.
METHODS: After IRB approval, we conducted a prospective observational study including neonates undergoing abdominal o

PURPOSE: Functional results, complications, cosmesis, operating time, and hospital stay were analyzed after staged urethroplasty for proximal hypospadias.
METHODS: Seventeen consecutive boys, mean age 17.7 +/- 1.6 months underwent a staged urethroplasty in the past 5 years. Urethral plate was tubularized and proximal hypospadias converted to distal. Hooded dorsal prepuce was buttonholed and transposed ventrally to cover the neo-urethra. Subsequently, a parameatal based flip flap urethroplasty completed the urethral reconstruction at mean age of 26.7 +/- 4.1 months.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that manifests with postural instability and gait imbalance. Correction of spinal deformity in patients with PD presents unique challenges.
METHODS: The PearlDiver database was queried between 2010 and 2020 to identify adult patients with spinal deformity before undergoing deformity correction with posterior spinal fusion. Two cohorts were created representing patients with and without a preoperative diagnosis of PD. Outcome measures included reoperation rates, surgical technique, cost, surgical complications, and medical comp

BACKGROUND: Standalone single and multilevel lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) have been increasingly applied to treat degenerative spinal conditions in a less invasive fashion. Graft subsidence following LLIF is a known complication and has been associated with poor bone mineral density (BMD). Previous research has demonstrated the utility of computed tomography (CT) Hounsfield units (HUs) as a surrogate for BMD. In the present study, we investigated the relationship between the CT HUs and subsidence and reoperation after standalone and multilevel LLIF.
METHODS: A prospectively maintain

OBJECTIVES: The evolving epidemiology of pediatric button battery ingestion is alarming. Currently, assessment of the degree of damage relies heavily on the initial esophagoscopy in a manner similar to the management of caustic ingestion. We have noted that use of this classic approach may delay the return to normal oral intake. Using several cases treated at our institution, we illustrate the value of "close second-look esophagoscopy" (CSLE) in expediting a return to normal oral intake after button battery ingestion.
METHODS: We present a retrospective case series.
RESULTS: Five patients (1
