Febrile seizure (FS) is a common type of seizure occurring in human during infancy and childhood. Although an epileptic seizure is associated with psychiatric disorders and comorbid diseases such as depression, anxiety, autism spectrum disorders, sleep disorders, attention deficits, cognitive impairment, and migraine, the causal relationship between FS and psychiatric disorders is poorly understood. The objective of the current study was to investigate the relationship of FS occurrence in childhood with the pathogenesis of anxiety disorder and depression using an FS rat model. We induced febri

BACKGROUND: Febrile seizures occurring in a child older than one month during an episode of fever affect 2% to 4% of children in Great Britain and the United States and recur in 30%. Rapid-acting antiepileptics and antipyretics given during subsequent fever episodes have been used to avoid the adverse effects of continuous antiepileptic drugs.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of antiepileptic and antipyretic drugs used prophylactically to treat children with febrile seizures.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (The Coc

Genetic generalized epilepsy with febrile seizures plus (GEFS+) is an idiopathic generalized epileptic syndrome of heterogeneous phenotype. The cases described here are of two brothers, one with severe myoclonic epilepsy of infancy (Dravet syndrome) and the other myoclonic-astatic epilepsy. Their father experienced one simple febrile seizure in infancy and two generalized tonic-clonic seizures after head trauma in adulthood, and had generalized epileptiform activity in the electroencephalogram. He died in a severe sport accident before genetic testing could be performed. In both siblings, but

PURPOSE: The magnitude of genetic influence in epilepsy may vary in relation to epilepsy classification and localization and factors such as antecedent febrile seizures. We assessed this genetic influence in a large epilepsy population.
METHODS: Patients with established epilepsy diagnosis evaluated in the Vanderbilt Epilepsy Program were systematically questioned about family history of epilepsy and febrile seizures, prior febrile seizures and other risk factors for epilepsy.
RESULTS: A total of 1994 patients with epilepsy and reliable family history were identified. Patients with prior feb

BACKGROUND: Patients with encephalopathy heralded by a prolonged seizure as the initial symptom often have abnormal subcortical white matter on diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI).
OBJECTIVE: To determine if these patients share other common features.
METHODS: Patients with encephalopathy heralded by a prolonged seizure and followed by the identification of abnormal subcortical white matter on MRI were collected retrospectively. Their clinical, laboratory, and radiologic data were reviewed.
RESULTS: Seventeen patients were identified, ages 10 months to 4 years. All had a prolonged febrile seizure

In an unselected group of children who were seen following an initial febrile convulsion, the frequency of subsequent afebrile seizures was 3.5% and of mental retardation 1%. The most common afebrile seizure type was generalized major (86%). About 3/4 of the children who developed afebrile seizures did so by three years and all by five years following the initial febrile seizure. The children with afebrile seizures differed from those without afebrile seizures in the frequency of neonatal abnormality, family history of mental retardation, focal initial febrile convulsions, and delay in psychom

Febrile seizures (FSs) are the most common pediatric neurological disorder, affecting approximately 5 % of children aged 6 months to 5 years. While most FSs are self-limiting and benign, about 20-30 % present as complex FSs (CFSs), which pose a risk of acute brain injury and the development of temporal lobe epilepsy. Various factors, including age, geographical distribution, and type of infection influence the occurrence of FS. Infection is the primary external trigger for FS, while the underlying intrinsic factors are linked to the immature and incomplete myelination of the brain during speci

INTRODUCTION: Febrile seizures are very commonly encountered in the setting of the pediatric emergency department; it represents 72.2% of seizures presenting to the pediatric emergency department in Saudi Arabia and affects about 3-8% of children. Febrile seizures are usually benign and treated conservatively. This is in contrast to bacterial meningitis, which carries a fatality rate of 14.4%. Meningitis presents with seizures in 23% of cases. Differentiation between febrile seizures and meningitis is therefore of utmost importance to avoid poor outcomes. On the other hand, this may cause many

Although simple febrile seizures are relatively common and benign in toddlers, it is important to rule out any underlying critical disease that necessitates further intervention and treatment. Thyroid storm, the extreme manifestation of hyperthyroidism, is relatively rare and not often considered in the differential diagnosis of a febrile seizure despite its high mortality rate. Here, we report 1 of the youngest patients with thyroid storm, who initially presented with a febrile seizure. After reevaluation, the 2-year-9-month-old patient was discovered to have thyromegaly, which led to recogni

In 2015, the Japanese Society of Child Neurology released new guidelines for the management of febrile seizures, the first update of such guidelines since 1996. In 1988, the Conference on Febrile Convulsions in Japan published "Guidelines for the Treatment of Febrile Seizures." The Task Committee of the Conference proposed a revised version of the guidelines in 1996; that version released in 1996 was used for the next 19years in Japan for the clinical management of children with febrile seizures. Although the guidelines were very helpful for many clinicians, new guidelines were needed to refle

Ring chromosomes are uncommon cytogenetic findings but have meanwhile been reported for nearly all human chromosomes. Among the rare observations of ring chromosomes in man, the diagnosis of ring chromosome 18 represents a prominent group. We here describe on the cytogenetic analysis results obtained for a 9 years old male patient of non-consanguineous parents. He had growth and developmental delay, mental and motor retardation, microcephaly, microphtalmia, triangle face, small dysplastic ears, strabismus, epicanthal folds on the left, short stature, cryptorchidism, spasticity, pes equinovarus

PURPOSE: To study the potential incidence of retinopathy in children with febrile seizures.
METHODS: Thirty-four children with febrile seizures, aged 3 months to 9 years and admitted from January 2000 to June 2008, were retrospectively analyzed. All cases received fundus examination within 24 hours after admission and the incidence of retinopathy was calculated.
RESULTS: None of the subjects was found to have retinal hemorrhages. Therefore, using Hanley's Rule of Three, the upper limit of 95% confidence interval of retinal hemorrhages following febrile seizures in children is less than 10%.

Febrile seizures (FS) may represent the most common seizure disorder in childhood and are known to be associated with putative genetic predispositions. Nevertheless, molecular genetic approaches toward understanding FS have been just initiated this decade. Recently, several genetic loci for FS have been mapped thereby assuring the genetic heterogeneity of FS. However, the exact molecular mechanisms of FS are yet to be elucidated. Genetic defects have been recently identified in autosomal dominant epilepsy with FS plus or generalized epilepsy with FS plus. The underlying mutations were found in

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the risk of bacteremia in children with febrile seizures treated as outpatients.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed involving 379 children aged 2 to 24 months presenting to an urban tertiary care children's hospital emergency department with a febrile seizure between February 1, 1993, and May 31, 1996.
RESULTS: The mean patient age was 15.9 months, and 217 (57%) were male. In 40 patients (10.6%), the use of oral antibiotics before initial emergency department evaluation was reported. Bacteremia occurred in 8 (2.1%) of 379 children studied. None of the

In this study, 140 children aged from 6 months to 6 years who presented with a first febrile convulsion at the King Fahad Hofuf Hospital, Al-Hassa, Saudi Arabia were retrospectively identified. Information about these children was obtained from their medical records covering a follow-up period of 3 years from July 1989 to June 1992. Recurrent febrile convulsions occurred in 60 of them (43%). Relevant risk factors that were observed to be significantly associated with seizure recurrence included an age of less than 18 months (odds ratio [OR] = 3.82; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 9.26, 1.58), a

Children with complex febrile seizure (CFS) are often hospitalized for concerns for serious bacterial infection (SBI) or seizure recurrence. We describe the yield of diagnostic studies and seizure recurrence during hospitalization in CFS children. We performed a retrospective review of 372 visits in 350 developmentally normal children aged 6 to 60 months between 2011 and 2016 for CFS. Majority of patients were male (200; 57.1%), with a mean age of 19.8 ± 11.3 months. Active seizures were noted in 42 (11.3%), status epilepticus in 35 (9.4%) while 97 (26.1%) had a seizure in the pediatric emerge

The frequency was studied with which human herpesviruses types 6 and 7 (HHV-6 and HHV-7) occur in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with febrile seizures and matched control patients. CSF samples were prospectively collected from a case series of patients with febrile seizures and from age-, sex-, and race-matched control patients without febrile seizures, all of whom were evaluated in the emergency department of an urban, tertiary care, pediatric medical center. Using polymerase chain reaction, the samples were examined for the presence of viral DNA from HHV-6, HHV-7, herpes simplex v

The relationship between febrile seizures and epilepsy has long been debated. We argue that there is some specificity to the types of epilepsy that follow febrile seizures, rather than febrile seizures being a nonspecific marker of a lowered seizure threshold. The relationship between febrile seizures and later epilepsy is frequently genetic. Recent clinical and molecular genetic studies suggest that there are a number of syndrome-specific genes for febrile seizures.
