Genome-Wide Homozygosity Patterns and Evidence for Selection in a Set of European and Near Eastern Horse Breeds.

Intensive artificial and natural selection have shaped substantial variation among European horse breeds. Whereas most equine selection signature studies employ divergent genetic population structures in order to derive specific inter-breed targets of selection, we screened a total of 1476 horses originating from 12 breeds for the loss of genetic diversity by runs of homozygosity (ROH) utilizing a 670,000 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping array. Overlapping homozygous regions (ROH islands) indicating signatures of selection were identified by breed and similarities/dissimilaritie

Effective population size, extended linkage disequilibrium and signatures of selection in the rare dog breed lundehund.

The Lundehund is an old dog breed with remarkable anatomical features including polydactyly in all four limbs and extraordinary flexibility of the spine. We genotyped 28 Lundehund using the canine Illumina high density beadchip to estimate the effective population size (Ne) and inbreeding coefficients as well as to identify potential regions of positive selection. The decay of linkage disequilibrium was slow with r2 = 0.95 in 50 kb distance. The last 7-200 generations ago, Ne was at 10-13. An increase of Ne was noted in the very recent generations with a peak value of 19 for Ne at generation 4

Assessment of Behavioral Predispositions of Selected Chicken Breeds for Use in Animal-Assisted Therapy: A Pilot Study.

The growth of interest in alternative forms of animal-assisted therapies (AAT) with chickens creates a need to identify breeds with appropriate behavioral predispositions. This pilot study evaluated the suitability of four breeds of ornamental chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus), Silkie bantam, Pekin bantam, Ko-Shamo, and Chabo daruma, for work in chicken-assisted therapy (CAT). Tests simulated an AAT session, assessing human approach and staying in their vicinity, reactions to sudden stimuli, and touch tolerance. A standard tonic immobility test was also performed. Significant interbreed diff

Analysis of the Nutritional Composition and Drought Tolerance Traits of Sweet Potato: Selection Criteria for Breeding Lines.

Sweet potato is an important world staple with the potential to address hunger and malnutrition. The Agricultural Research Council of South Africa has led sweet potato breeding efforts in the country since 1952 and released several important cultivars. More detailed quality assessments are necessary in addition to general breeding criteria. The present study investigated sweet potato cultivars and elite clones for (1) their nutritional composition; (2) biochemical reaction to drought stress; (3) correlate biochemical reaction to root yield for possible identification of screening methods for d

Effects of selective breeding for voluntary exercise, chronic exercise, and their interaction on muscle attachment site morphology in house mice.

Skeletal muscles attach to bone at their origins and insertions, and the interface where tendon meets bone is termed the attachment site or enthesis. Mechanical stresses at the muscle/tendon-bone interface are proportional to the surface area of the bony attachment sites, such that a larger attachment site will distribute loads over a wider area. Muscles that are frequently active and/or are of larger size should cause attachment sites to hypertrophy (training effect); however, experimental studies of animals subjected to exercise have provided mixed results. To enhance our ability to detect t

Genetic parameters and pedigree-based selective breeding outcomes for productivity traits in industrial black soldier fly (hermetia illucens L.) production systems.

BACKGROUND: Selective breeding in mass-reared insects has progressed rapidly in recent years, and the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens L. - Diptera: Stratiomyidae), the most widely cultivated insect species for animal feed, is emerging as a strong candidate for genetic improvement. Estimation of quantitative‑genetic parameters and implementation of pedigree‑based selection schemes are essential to increase genetic gain while controlling inbreeding under industrial rearing. Here, we report a pilot‑scale breeding experiment conducted under family group‑mating with partial pedigree uncertaint

Breeding values, stability, and heterotic grouping of Asian Saccharum spontaneum collection for parental selection in sugarcane program.

Sugarcane breeding is constrained by a narrow genetic base, limiting progress in ratooning ability, stress tolerance, and climate resilience. Although Saccharum spontaneum harbors valuable genetic diversity, its systematic utilization in breeding remains limited by a lack of multi-environment evaluations. Therefore, 100 Asian S. spontaneum clones were assessed across six environments (two locations × three crop cycles) during 2022-2025 using an integrated framework that combined BLUP breeding values, AMMI-based stability indices (ASV, GSI, HMRPGV, WAASB), and the multi-trait selection index MG

QTL mapping, breeding, and debugging Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains through Reiterated Mass Selection and backcrosSing (ReMaSSing).

BACKGROUND: Producing second-generation ethanol from lignocellulosic hydrolysates (LCHs) poses significant challenges for Saccharomyces cerevisiae due to the presence of fermentation inhibitors. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping of stress-tolerant S. cerevisiae strains is important for identifying adaptive alleles that can enhance yeast fermentation of LCHs. However, the QTL mapping process is labor-intensive, requiring the screening of numerous recombinants and repeated crossings to improve mapping resolution. RESULTS: We developed Reiterated Mass Selection and backcrosSing (ReMaSSing) t

Genomic diversity and signatures of selection in meat and fancy rabbit breeds based on high-density marker data.

BACKGROUND: Domestication of the rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) has led to a multi-purpose species that includes many breeds and lines with a broad phenotypic diversity, mainly for external traits (e.g. coat colours and patterns, fur structure, and morphometric traits) that are valued by fancy rabbit breeders. As a consequence of this human-driven selection, distinct signatures are expected to be present in the rabbit genome, defined as signatures of selection or selective sweeps. Here, we investigated the genome of three Italian commercial meat rabbit breeds (Italian Silver, Italian Spotted a

To the Root of the Curl: A Signature of a Recent Selective Sweep Identifies a Mutation That Defines the Cornish Rex Cat Breed.

The cat (Felis silvestris catus) shows significant variation in pelage, morphological, and behavioral phenotypes amongst its over 40 domesticated breeds. The majority of the breed specific phenotypic presentations originated through artificial selection, especially on desired novel phenotypic characteristics that arose only a few hundred years ago. Variations in coat texture and color of hair often delineate breeds amongst domestic animals. Although the genetic basis of several feline coat colors and hair lengths are characterized, less is known about the genes influencing variation in coat gr

Size breeds success: multiple paternity, multivariate selection and male semelparity in a small marsupial, Antechinus stuartii.

Mating in the marsupial genus Antechinus is a synchronous annual event that is characterized by monoestry in females and abrupt postmating mortality in males. Male semelparity (multiple copulations during a single breeding season per lifetime) is often assumed to occur as a consequence of the intense mating effort expended by males in the rut, but the forces selecting for this remain elusive. Here, we investigate selection in male brown antechinus, Antechinus stuartii, and test two hypotheses for the evolution of semelparity: intermale competition and sperm competition. If intermale competitio

Review: Cross-breeding, advanced reproductive technologies, and genetic selection in twelve dairy production systems in Africa.

The supply and demand for milk in Africa have been rising due to factors such as population growth, urbanization, increasing incomes, and improved living standards. Dairy production significantly impacts the economic and social development of African countries, contributing over 10% to the agricultural gross domestic product in countries such as Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania. The ongoing development of the African dairy industry can be attributed, to a certain extent, to the utilization of cross-breeding strategies and advanced reproductive technologies such as artificial insemination, embryo

Toward Marker-Assisted Selection in Breeding for Fusarium Wilt Tropical Race-4 Type Resistant Bananas.

Fusarium wilt is a soil borne fungal disease that has devastated banana production in plantations around the world. Most Cavendish-type bananas are susceptible to strains of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) belonging to the Subtropical Race 4 (STR4) and Tropical Race 4 (TR4). The wild banana diploid Musa acuminata ssp. malaccensis (AA, 2n = 22) carries resistance to Foc TR4. A previous study using segregating populations derived from M. acuminata ssp. malaccensis identified a quantitative trait locus (QTL) (12.9 cM) on the distal part of the long arm of chromosome 3, conferring resistan
