Role of self-care in sickle cell disease.

Self-care is an important aspect of managing a chronic disease. In sickle cell disease (SCD), home self-care contributes to individual pain management and thus pain crisis prevention. A better understanding of self-care can help health care providers equip patients with the resources and skills necessary to participate in their disease management. The aim of this study was to examine factors that influence self-care among young adults with SCD. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted using secondary data analysis. Participants were recruited from two SCD clinics in the southeastern

Care of the psychotic self-amputee undergoing replantation.

The acutely psychotic self-amputee may be brought to the emergency room out of control, refusing treatment. Although these conditions make it difficult for the surgeon to provide restorative surgery, these patients may be quite grateful when resolution of psychosis restores realistic thinking and better judgment. This article describes the treatment of two such patients and provides practical guidelines for general behavioral management. The focal point of the approach is the formation of a surgeon/psychiatrist team that actively and consistently confronts and manages the disturbed behavior fr

Value of self-care for sexual and reproductive health.

It is opportune for the Journal to contribute to Self-Care Month and Self-Care Day, as proclaimed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in its efforts to promote self-care which is increasingly prominent in discourses in resource-limited settings for attaining universal health coverage. With sexual and reproductive health and rights facing hindrances, such as cultural barriers, self-care should facilitate access to services whilst maintaining privacy. Largely limited to pregnancy beforehand, self-care can now be promoted for the self-management of medical abortion, self-administration of inje

Danish community pharmacies supporting self-care for patients.

In Denmark, self-care has been a part of the health care professional and health political discourse since the middle of the 1970s particularly in relation to prevention. However, the concept has become more visible in connection with the Danish government's public health programme "Healthy throughout life" from 2002 to 2010, where patients' self-care was highlighted as an important element in preventing disease progression and complications. Self-care in Denmark is seen as a partnership between the patient and the health care professional. Some self-care activities in Danish community pharmac

Integrating self-managed medication abortion with medical care.

In this commentary, we distill key messages from a new framework for self-managed medication abortion developed by Global Doctors for Choice. Since Global Doctors for Choice supports doctors working in different contexts around the world, the document also highlights clinical concerns and advocacy opportunities for clinicians in both low- and high-resource settings, and in places with varying legal and administrative restrictions on abortion.

Self-care practices of Chinese individuals with diabetes.

The aim of this study was to investigate the self-care practices of Chinese individuals with diabetes. Data were collected from 163 Chinese individuals with diabetes using a one-to-one interview approach. The Chinese version of the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities (SDSCA) was used to assess diabetes-related knowledge and self-care practices. The majority of participants were aware of the importance of self-care in managing diabetes. However, only 70 participants (43%) scored >50% in the diabetes-related questionnaires. Mean fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels were higher (P<0.04) for pa

Self-care in adults with sickle cell disease.

This article summarizes the psychometric evaluation of the Chronic Illness Assessment Interview for Sickle Cell Disease (CIAI-SCD), an instrument based on a model of self-care for adult patients with chronic medical conditions. The CIAI-SCD was administered to 104 adults with sickle cell disease. A factor analysis identified three factors that reflected the psychological constructs of Personal Satisfaction and Perceived Control (Factor 1), Feeling Concerned and Worried (Factor 2), and Feeling Supported (Factor 3). Preliminary evidence for the internal consistency, test-retest reliability conte

Self-care instructions: do patients understand educational materials?

As health care providers we are not in a position to teach reading. We do, however, have a legal and an ethical obligation to provide patients with self-care instructions they can understand. Because the methods presented for enhancing patient understanding of self-care instructions are relatively new, and because nurses are just beginning to be aware of the need for such interventions, it will be a while before the ideal situation exists. Ideally, each pamphlet or set of instructions would be coded with the reading grade level needed to understand it and each patient's reading level would be

Psychological aspects of self-care and home dialysis.

Self-care and home dialysis encourages the patient's active participation in his treatment which may enhance coping and adaptation to his illness. The psychological issues of dependence-independence, activity-passivity, and control and mastery are frequently referred to in the literature as being important in understanding the chronic stress of illness and treatment. The measure of successful coping should be determined by adaptive or maladaptive value of behavior rather than traditional concepts of normality or abnormality. Treatment planning and patient selection should be tailored to the ps

This study aims to identify the needs of COPD patients to design a self-care program based on a mobile phone application. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this multi-method study, the self-care needs of COPD patients were identified with two approaches: literature review and quantitative content analysis. Factors Associated With Self-Efficacy of Foot Self-Care Among Patients With Diabetes Attending a Tertiary Care Center in Saudi Arabia.

Several reports have shown self-efficacy to be a reliable way of predicting foot self-care behavior in patients with diabetes. However, at a global level in general, and in Saudi Arabia in particular, investigation of the factors related to self-efficacy in executing foot self-care continues to remain inadequate. This study endeavors to identify the factors associated with the self-efficacy of foot self-care among patients with diabetes in Saudi Arabia. From a tertiary diabetes care center in Saudi Arabia, 175 patients with diabetes were selected to participate in this cross-sectional study. E

Self-care educational guide for mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus: A systematic review on identifying self-care domains, approaches, and their effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a common form of poor carbohydrate intolerance, prevalent among pregnant women and associated with unhealthy lifestyle behaviors. Given the dearth of information on self-empowerment among mothers with GDM, a self-care health education package needs to be developed to prevent related complications. OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to identify self-care approaches, domains, and their effectiveness for a proper self-care educational guide package for women with GDM. Expressive Writing and Self-Care in Palliative Care Professionals: A Qualitative Longitudinal Study.

Palliative care professionals are exposed to emotionally intense situations. Stress, anxiety, and burnout can impact the dimension of care through the loss of motivation. Expressive writing in the general population effectively promotes emotion regulation through meaning-making. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of Expressive writing on the meaning change in the perception of traumatic professional events in multi-professional palliative care settings in Italy. We conducted a prospective study with longitudinal qualitative methodology, following an ad-hoc expressive writing protocol. The

Predictors of Self-Care Self-Efficacy in Adults Familiar with Palliative Care: The Role of Patient-Centered Communication, Health, and Well-Being.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the determinants of self-care self-efficacy (SS) is essential to improving health outcomes in patients facing advanced disease. This study contributes to the field by examining the direct and indirect effects of quality of care (QC), patient-centered communication (PCC), perceived health (PH), and emotional well-being (EW) on SS in American adults with knowledge of palliative care. METHODS: A predictive-crossover design study was conducted. Data from N = 1154 adult respondents to the 2018 Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) 5, cycle 2 were used. Structu
