Longitudinal Associations Between Childhood Sexual Abuse, Silencing the Self, and Sexual Self-Efficacy in Adolescents.

Sexual self-efficacy-the belief in one's ability to engage in desired and to refuse unwanted, sexual activities and behaviors-is an important feature in promoting adolescent sexual health and well-being. One factor that may affect the development of sexual self-efficacy is child sexual abuse. However, little is known about the processes underlying the relation between child sexual abuse and sexual self-efficacy. Using longitudinal data from a sample of 739 adolescent girls and boys aged between 14 and 18 years, we examined the mediational role of two "silencing the self" attitudes and behavior

Mediating effects of depression, stigma, and self-efficacy on self-management improvement in an evidence-based epilepsy self-management program.

AIMS: To evaluate whether improvements in depressive symptoms, epilepsy self-efficacy, and perceived stigma mediate the association between the SMART intervention and epilepsy self-management. METHODS: 160 people with epilepsy were enrolled in a randomized controlled trial comparing SMART with standard care. Potential mediators included depressive symptom severity, self-efficacy, and perceived stigma measured at baseline, 13 weeks, and 6 months. Multivariable linear regression models estimated direct and indirect effects, with the indirect effect defined as the average causal mediation effect

Parental political engagement and self-efficacy: An exploratory study.

Political engagement (PE) is associated with a sense of empowerment. PE by parents affects children's lives. This study explored parents' attitudes about inclusion of political engagement discussion in well-child care. Because voting is an expression of empowerment, we hypothesized that voting would be related to higher parenting self-efficacy. We administered a brief questionnaire to a convenience sample of parents/guardians at well-child visits at an urban hospital. The questionnaire included 10 Likert scale questions touching on parenting efficacy; beliefs about political engagement; voting

Verifying Efficacy of Self-Inhalation Training for Velopharyngeal Dysfunction.

UNLABELLED: Velopharyngeal closure in healthy adults during different tasksObjective: Velopharyngeal dysfunction causes not only resonance problems (so-called "hypernasality") but also dysphagia, particularly in the elderly. In our previous study, we developed a new inhaling training method to objectively improve velopharyngeal function using the measurement of peak inspiratory flow (PIF) rate, which was effective in all patients. In this study, we clarify the degree of velopharyngeal closure to determine the efficacy of our training to improve the closure mechanism. METHODS: Three healthy vo

A self-assessment efficacy tool for spermicide contraceptive users.

BACKGROUND: Easily accessible contraceptive methods, such as chemical and barrier methods, are used currently by approximately 1 in 6 women who use contraception in the United States. Even in the face of suboptimal effectiveness, coitally dependent methods likely will always have a role in fertility management. Because most contraceptive efficacy stratifications use population-based data, for women to make informed decisions about the individual fit of a contraceptive method, better evidence-based, user-friendly tools are needed. OBJECTIVES: Spermicides are a readily available, over-the count

Disease-specific self-efficacy in the eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders.

Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGIDs) are chronic inflammatory conditions with increasing global prevalence. Self-efficacy is important for patients' ability to manage chronic disease. We sought to evaluate disease-specific self-efficacy in the EGIDs via a modified version of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Self-Efficacy Scale (IBD-SES). Ninety-one Participants reported demographic, clinical, and psychosocial variables. The IBD-SES demonstrated excellent reliability and validity in this population. Self-efficacy was higher in men, patients with less severe disease, and those who had c

Multidimensional self-efficacy and affect in wheelchair basketball players.

In the current study, variables grounded in social cognitive theory with athletes with disabilities were examined. Performance, training, resiliency, and thought control self-efficacy, and positive (PA) and negative (NA) affect were examined with wheelchair basketball athletes (N = 79). Consistent with social cognitive theory, weak to strong significant relationships among the four types of self-efficacy (rs = .22-.78) and among self-efficacy and affect (rs = -.40-.29) were found. Basketball players who were efficacious in their ability to overcome training barriers were also confident in thei

Self-efficacy to use condoms in unmarried Latino adults.

Measures of self-efficacy to use condoms can clarify the barriers to condom use Latinos encounter. A 20-item scale, that differed slightly for men and women, and was based on extensive elicitation interviews, was used in a random digit dial household survey of 1,600 unmarried Latino adults in 10 states with large Latino populations. Self-efficacy was related to condom use for both men and women. Factor analyses revealed five correlated factors: Regular Partner, Impulse Control, Partner Resistance, STD Thoughts, and Condom Discussion. Both men and women reported lowest self-efficacy for impulse

Maternal Mindfulness and Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy: Exploring the Relationship.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding mindfulness-defined as a mother's present-moment awareness, emotional attunement, and focused attention during breastfeeding-is an emerging concept with significant implications for lactation outcomes. While mindfulness and breastfeeding self-efficacy are recognized determinants of breastfeeding success, evidence regarding their relationship remains limited, particularly within the Turkish context. This study examined the association between maternal mindfulness during breastfeeding and breastfeeding self-efficacy. METHODS: A descriptive and analytic cross-sectional

Predictive utility of self-efficacy in early stroke rehabilitation.

INTRODUCTION: A biopsychosocial approach entailing person-centered factors provides valuable insight to post-stroke rehabilitation potential. The consideration of an individual's belief in their capabilities, known as self-efficacy, may prove especially informative in the inpatient rehabilitation setting where motor learning often occurs. OBJECTIVE: To assess the predictive utility of self-efficacy in functional independence status change during inpatient rehabilitation. METHODS: Individuals with stroke admitted to an inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF) completed an assessment battery ne

Increasing Provider Self-Efficacy to Manage Chronic Cancer Pain.

BACKGROUND: Aims: Pain is a significant problem for those with a cancer diagnosis. Oncology providers often use opioid therapy to manage cancer-related pain. Accessing opioid therapy has grown increasingly difficult because of the opioid epidemic. The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) released guidelines to optimize pain management for patients with oncologic diagnoses. The goal of this quality improvement project was to create an educational session and evaluate self-efficacy in providers who manage chronic cancer pain. DESIGN: The Plan-Do-Study-Act was used as the framework for t

Self-efficacy in non-concussed youth: a normative study.

OBJECTIVE: In pediatric concussion, there has been a shift to consider how pre-injury profiles, such as self-efficacy, affect the recovery trajectory. The aim of this study was to investigate normal ranges of self-efficacy (overall, academic, social, emotional) in youth and to explore its relationship with the effects of daily stressors, operationalized as concussion-like symptoms, demographic factors, pre-injury/learning related factors, and concussion history. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 1300 uninjured youth 13-18 years old (1111 males, 189 females) was conducted by secondary analys

High Self-Efficacy Is Associated with Prescription Contraceptive Use.

OBJECTIVES: In the United States, 45% of pregnancies continue to be unintended. Although many previous studies have focused on external barriers to contraceptive use such as cost or access, fewer studies have evaluated internal barriers such as individual characteristics. We hypothesize that high self-efficacy for contraception will be associated with use of more effective contraceptive methods. STUDY DESIGN: The analytic sample is 861 privately insured Pennsylvania women aged 18 to 40 years not intending pregnancy for 12 months at enrollment. Contraceptive self-efficacy (high vs. low) was me

Depression and AIDS Preventive Self-efficacy Among Taiwanese Adolescents.

Effectively reducing adolescents' risky sexual behaviors has been an urgent need since the HIV/AIDS infections among young people has been acknowledged as a priority. Self-efficacy has been considered playing an essential role in behavioral changes, and depressed individuals may demonstrate lower self-efficacy. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to gain insights into self-reported depression among 16-18 years-old Taiwanese adolescents as well as to explore psychosocial predictors of AIDS preventive self-efficacy. A convenience sample of 734 adolescents from southern Taiwan was recru
