Gender bias in self-report personality disorder inventories.

There has been considerable controversy and research regarding gender biases in the diagnosis of personality disorders, but few studies have explored whether personality disorder self-report inventories might contain gender biases. The current study investigated whether items from three commonly used inventories evidence a potential for gender bias. Subjects were from outpatient mental health clinics. Items were considered gender biased if they exhibited gender differences and failed to correlate with or, more importantly, correlated negatively with dysfunction. Thirty-eight items evidenced po

Self-report of family histories of learning difficulties.

Self-reports of learning difficulties by parents of reading disabled children may be inflated because of recall bias. A retrospective study of the association between specific reading disabilities and familial reports of learning difficulties indicated the relative odds of being reading disabled for those whose relatives reported learning difficulties compared with children whose relatives did not report learning difficulties was statistically significant if fathers or siblings reported learning difficulties. No significant association was found between mothers' self-reports of learning diffic

Assessing for abuse: self-report versus nurse interview.

Estimates are that 1.8 million women are physically abused each year by their husbands. To prevent abuse and promote physical safety, routine assessment is essential. Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas added four self-reported abuse assessment questions to their standard intake form completed by all initial and annual-visit clients. After one month of self-report by 477 women, the prevalence of physical abuse was 7.3%. To compare self-report to nurse interview assessment, the same four questions were asked of 300 women coming to the same clinic for initial or annual visits. The

Self-limited blastomycosis: a report of 39 cases.

We report 39 patients with pulmonary blastomycosis who were not treated with specific antifungal chemotherapy. Fourteen of these patients were recognized during an epidemic of blastomycosis in 1972 and did not have culturally proven disease. The remaining 25 patients were all proven instances of blastomycosis, 24 of whom had pulmonary disease only. Over a median observation period of 42 months (range: 12 to 168) one patient relapsed 52 months after the original diagnosis, while all of the others have remained clinically well. It is our belief that certain patients with blastomycosis limited to

Self-limited blastomycosis: a report of thirteen cases.

Blastomycosis is not generally recognized to be a self-limited pulmonary infection. We report 13 patients with blastomycosis who followed a self-limited course. Presenting complaints were usually those of an acute pulmonary infection with fever, productive cough, and pleurtiic chest pain. The duration of symtpoms before diagnosis was usuallms were variable and not diagnostic. The blastomycin skin test and complement-fixing serologies to blastomycin were generally not helpful. In all patients the diagnosis was made by either cultural or visual identification of the organism from sputum, bronchi

Validity of self-reported cancer history in the health examinees (HEXA) study: A comparison of self-report and cancer registry records.

PURPOSE: To assess the validity of the cohort study participants' self-reported cancer history via data linkage to a cancer registry database. METHODS: We included 143,965 participants from the Health Examinees (HEXA) study recruited between 2004 and 2013 who gave informed consent for record linkage to the Korean Central Cancer Registry (KCCR). The sensitivity and the positive predictive value of self-reported histories of cancer were calculated and 95% confidence intervals were estimated. RESULTS: A total of 4,860 participants who had at least one record in the KCCR were included in the cal

Self-induced seizures presumably by peri-orbital somatosensory self-stimulation: a report of two cases.

Self-induced seizures by somatosensory stimulation are rare. We describe two epileptic patients with self-induced seizures presumably by peri-orbital somatosensory stimulation. Two infants with severely delayed psychomotor development and poor visual acuity after acute subdural hemorrhage in early infancy had been diagnosed as having West syndrome. They evolutionally became to show serial self-induced seizures preceded by rubbing eye with finger in one case and touching right eyebrow with the back of left hand in the other case. Greater gender diversity among autistic children by self-report and parent-report.

Gender diversity broadly refers to the way in which an individual experiences (expressions and/or identities) their gender distinctly to that which would be expected based upon social norms for their gender assigned at birth. Recent research has shown a higher representation of gender diversity among autistic youth. Previous research in this area has relied on parent-report based on a single question from the Child Behavior Checklist Item-110, asking whether their child "Wishes to be the opposite sex." The Gender Diversity Screening Questionnaire Self-Report and Parent-Report were used to asse

Self-reported problems in medication self-management in older polymedicated patients in general practice.

BACKGROUND: Polypharmacy is common in the older population and is recognized as a geriatric syndrome. The self-administration of medication is complex and requires cognitive and physical capacities that decrease with age. To avoid medication errors or harm, medication management capacity needs to be thoroughly assessed in routine clinical care. Here, we report on measuring self-reported medication management capacity in older polymedicated patients in primary care in an exploratory study using a questionnaire developed in the "Ability to Self-administer Medication in Non-demented In-hospital P

Self-reported prevalence and correlates of sex as self-injury in a Swedish high school population.

BACKGROUND: Sex as self-injury (SASI) is a form of self-harm where sexual acts are used to cope with negative emotions, psychological distress or interpersonal difficulties, similar to other self-injurious behaviors like cutting or burning the skin. Despite growing recognition in Swedish society and healthcare, SASI lacks a standardized definition and remains under-researched. This study aimed to investigate the self-reported prevalence of SASI, motives and manifestations of the behavior and its association with emotional dysregulation, trauma symptoms, and abuse. METHOD: The study was part o

Determination of Normative Values for the Early Onset Scoliosis Self-Reported Questionnaire (EOSQ-SELF).

BACKGROUND: The early-onset scoliosis (EOS) self-questionnaire (EOSQ-SELF) is a recently validated patient-reported outcome (PRO) instrument created to allow patients with EOS to report their perspectives on their own health (Appendix 1, Supplemental Digital Content 1, http://links.lww.com/BPO/A936). The goal of this study is to establish age-matched normative values for the EOSQ-SELF. METHODS: Patients aged 8 to 18 presenting to an orthopaedic surgery clinic without spinal deformities were enrolled prospectively over 2 years. Those with prior orthopaedic treatment unrelated to scoliosis and

Co-occurrence of self-reported disordered eating and self-harm in UK university students.

OBJECTIVES: Students are reported to have more symptoms of mental health problems than other young people. Disordered eating and self-harm are common but evidence on comorbidity, especially in community samples, is limited. This study aimed to examine their co-occurrence, onset timing, and the help-seeking of UK university students. METHODS: Two surveys were administered to undergraduate students at a single UK university. One was administered electronically (UNIversity Quality of Life and Learning survey) and completed by 5,045 students. The second, questionnaire-based, was completed by 805

Agreement of self-reported medical history: comparison of an in-person interview with a self-administered questionnaire.

PURPOSE: To compare history of 22 different diseases reported during an in-person interview with that reported on a mailed self-administered questionnaire. METHODS: 7841 participants of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer (EPIC)-Potsdam study. The interview at baseline and the questionnaire at follow-up approximately 2 years later included identical questions about whether the participant had ever had a physician diagnosis of each disease. Incident diagnoses occurring in the interval between the interview and questionnaire were excluded from the analysis. RESULTS: Agreement be

Self-reported musculoskeletal disorders questionnaire for agriculturists: An online self-assessment tool development.

The musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) severity and frequency questionnaire (MSFQ) has been used with agriculturists. Although it frequently appears in the literature, it does not periodically reflect the levels of MSDs. This study aimed to develop a MSDs assessment tool for agriculturists via an online database. The four hospitals that were assigned to the development and tryout group received a random selection of participants from 33 health promoting hospitals. In the development phase, 55 agriculturists (from two hospitals) completed the structured interview questionnaire. The MSFQ document

Association between adolescents' self-perceived oral health and self-reported experiences of abuse.

This study investigated the association between self-perceived oral health and self-reported exposure to different types of child abuse. It was hypothesized that self-perceived oral health is compromised in exposed adolescents. All Grade-9 compulsory school and second-year high-school pupils in Södermanland County, Sweden (n = 7,262) were invited to take part in a population-based survey; 5,940 adolescents responded. Survey items on health and social wellbeing included self-perceived oral health and exposure to abuse. The results showed that poor self-perceived oral health was associated with

Validity of self-reported migraine in adolescents and children.

OBJECTIVE: To assess agreement for migraine day between self-report and diagnostic guidelines for children and adolescents using a headache diary. BACKGROUND: Trial guidelines recommend prospective collection of headache features and adoption of migraine day as an outcome measure, but there is no clear consensus on the definition of migraine day. METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of data from two projects-a prospective cohort study validating a pediatric scale of treatment expectancy and a clinical trial of occipital nerve blocks to treat status migrainosus. Uncovering the hierarchical structure of self-reported hostility.

Hostility and other related terms like anger and aggression are often used interchangeably to describe antagonistic affect, cognition, and behavior. Psychometric studies suggest that hostility consists of multiple separate factors, but consensus is currently lacking. In the present study we examined the hierarchical structure of hostility. The hierarchical structure of hostility was examined in N = 376 people (i.e., a mixed community and highly hostile sample), using both specific and broad hostility self-report measures. A series of Principal Components Analyses revealed the structure of host

Self-reported aggression amongst active cyclists.

There is a paucity of research regarding aggressive behaviours of on-road cyclists and the consequences that aggression may have on their safety. To address this, we examined self-reported anger-based aggression in a sample of "active" cyclists (N = 623: males = 69%) defined as those who regularly ride a bicycle on-road (all rode at least once a week, 64% rode between 4-7 days per week). Using the Cyclist Anger Expression Inventory (CAX) three broad types of anger-based aggression were identified: 1) constructive ways of dealing with anger, 2) verbal aggression and 3) personal physical aggress
