Do stimulants improve self-esteem in children with ADHD and peer problems?

The self-esteem of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has been shown to be low. The effects of stimulant medication upon their self-esteem have not been systematically studied. The present study employed a reliable self-report instrument to measure the self-esteem of children with ADHD medicated with stimulants vs. those who were unmedicated. Results showed that stimulants were associated with significantly higher self-esteem. Children with ADHD prescribed stimulants reported feeling more intelligent and more popular than unmedicated children with ADHD. Children with

The effects of the beta-carboline FG 7142, on intracranial self-stimulation in the rat.

The effects of FG 7142 were examined, alone and in combination with chlordiazepoxide, on self-stimulation of the mid-lateral hypothalamus. Rewarding stimuli were delivered according to a 10-sec variable-interval schedule of reinforcement. FG 7142 (1-20 mg/kg) produced a dose-related depression in responding, and chlordiazepoxide (5 mg/kg) enhanced it. When these two drugs were given together, response rates did not differ significantly from control rates.

Electrical self-stimulation of the brain: a model for the behavioral evaluation of toxic agents.

Rats implanted chronically with electrodes in the posterior lateral hypothalamus were trained to press levers in order to stimulate the brain electrically. Brief exposures to low oxygen concentrations reduced the lever pressing rate proportionately with the reduction in inspired oxygen. Similar reductions in self-stimulation rates could be observed in animals exposed to carbon monoxide or the organic solvent, trichloroethylene. Prolonged exposures of animals to hypoxia in chambers where self-stimulation rates as well as food and water intake via lever pressing were monitored, indicated that as

Extracellular vesicles with unique proteomic signatures from self-organized cardiac spheroids under hydrodynamic stimulation.

Cardiac extracellular vesicles (EVs) hold promise as cell-free therapeutics for heart repair. However, robust methods to produce scalable, functional and cardiac-specific EVs at high yield remain a limiting factor in their exploitation. Here, we report an engineered platform that combines 3D cardiac microtissues with hydrodynamic stimulation to address these hurdles. We exploited differential cell mechanics, quantified via surface tension measurements, to establish a unique 3D spheroid architecture showing cardiomyocytes preferentially localizing at the spheroid periphery. A controlled-flow bi

An injectable, self-healing carboxymethylated chitosan hydrogel with mild photothermal stimulation for wound healing.

Hydrogels can mimic extracellular matrix and provide a suitable microenvironment for accelerating wound healing. Nevertheless, the complicated wound condition, the disturbance of external forces, and the manufacturing process of the dressing were still difficult problems. An injectable self-healing hydrogel with mild photothermal therapy (MPTT) was developed for wound healing via dynamic Schiff bonds. After covalently incorporating GO-BPEI (branched polyethyleneimine grafting graphene oxide), an observable mechanical strength improvement and photothermal conversion property of GO-BPEI/carboxym

Detection thresholds for object motion and self-motion during vestibular and visuo-oculomotor stimulation.

We compared the detection threshold for object motion with that of self-motion in space in healthy human subjects. Stimuli consisted of horizontal rotations of subjects' body with a fixation spot kept in fixed alignment with their heads (vestibular stimulus), rotation of the fixation spot relative to the stationary subjects (visuo-oculomotor stimulus), and a combination thereof by applying rotations of subjects body relative to the stationary object (sinusoidal oscillations, 0.025-0.4 Hz). Two series of experiments were performed. 1) One group of subjects was instructed to attend to, and to in

Intracranial self-stimulation and locomotor traces as indicators for evaluating and developing antipsychotic drugs.

When chlorpromazine (CPZ) and lithium chloride (LiCl) are compared, the former suppresses both rat's intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS) and methamphetamine (MAP)-induced hyperactivity. On the other hand, the latter suppresses only MAP-induced abnormal hyperactivity but hardly suppresses a purpose-oriented ICSS associated with the reward system. Therefore, LiCl inhibits abnormal hyperactivity induced by MAP, but it does not suppress physiological motivation. Using the two types of antipsychotic drugs, the authors propose a method of combining the ICSS and locomotor activity together with its

Antagonism of footshock stress-induced inhibition of intracranial self-stimulation by naloxone or methamphetamine.

Rats were trained to lever-press for intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS) with electrodes implanted in the ventral tegmental area (VTA). The effect of inescapable footshock on response rates to ICSS was examined in the present study. Markedly decreased response rates to ICSS were observed 15 min to 24 h following inescapable footshock. Naloxone (10.0 mg/kg) itself was without effect on response rates to ICSS, but completely antagonized the decreased response rates by the stressor treatment. A relatively low dose of methamphetamine (0.5 mg/kg), which showed no effect on ICSS rates in naive rats

Self-assembling paclitaxel-mediated stimulation of tumor-associated macrophages for postoperative treatment of glioblastoma.

The unique cancer-associated immunosuppression in brain, combined with a paucity of infiltrating T cells, contributes to the low response rate and poor treatment outcomes of T cell-based immunotherapy for patients diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Here, we report on a self-assembling paclitaxel (PTX) filament (PF) hydrogel that stimulates macrophage-mediated immune response for local treatment of recurrent glioblastoma. Our results suggest that aqueous PF solutions containing aCD47 can be directly deposited into the tumor resection cavity, enabling seamless hydrogel filling of the

The brain stimulation of DLPFC regulates choice preference in intertemporal choice self-other differences.

Intertemporal choice requires to make decision by evaluating the value of two options consisting of different times and benefits. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) is a key brain region for modulating intertemporal choice. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of non-invasive brain stimulation over DLPFC on intertemporal choice behavior for self and others. We used transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) to stimulate bilateral DLPFC in two experiments respectively. After stimulation, subjects made a choice between a Sma

Urethral self-inserted sewing needle in a 14-year-old boy for autoerotic stimulation.

Urethral foreign bodies are rare in daily practice, especially in adolescents with no evident history of mental illness. The presentation is usually delayed and a wide variety of objects may be implicated. Treatment by minimally invasive procedures (endoscopy), if possible, is preferred to minimize bladder and urethral injuries and psychiatric evaluation is mandatory to detect an underlying mental disorder. Despite the available literature on self-inserted urethral foreign bodies; the case we report here of urethral self-insertion of a sewing needle in a 14 year-old boy for autoerotic stimulat

Self-Motion Versus Environmental-Motion Perception Following Rotational Vestibular Stimulation and Factors Modifying Them.

Motion perception following rotational vestibular stimulation is described either as a self-motion or as an environmental-motion. The purpose of the present study was to establish frequency of occurrence of both sensations in healthy humans; what other sensations they experience and how factors insinuation and visual cues modify them. Twenty-four healthy subjects were rotated with constant velocity of 80°/s in four combinations of opened and closed eyes during the rotation and after a sudden stop. After the cessation of the rotation they reported their spontaneous or insinuated illusory motion

Psychological functioning in Parkinson's disease post-deep brain stimulation: Self-regulation and executive functioning.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder involving the basal ganglia, resulting in motor and extra-motor deficits. These extra-motor deficits may be reflective of a self-regulatory deficit impacting patients' ability to regulate cognitive processes, thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. There is a need to further examine the prevalence and range of self-regulation (SR) and executive functioning (EF) impairments in PD. This study sought to do so in a sample of patients with PD (N = 31) who underwent deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery for motor symptom treatment. Patients complete

Fatal subarachnoid hemorrhage during sexual anal self-stimulation in a female: a case report.

Sudden death after sexual activity is a well-known entity, but it is rare in females. Herein we present a case of fatal, massive subarachnoid hemorrhage from a ruptured berry-shaped aneurysm, during sexual anal self-stimulation. A 39-year-old woman was found dead on a couch, with the wooden handle of a spring twirl whisk inserted inside her anus and rectum as a dildo-like object. External examination was unremarkable with no signs of injuries. Intracranial examination showed a massive subarachnoid hemorrhage, up to 6 mm in thickness, especially around the brainstem and the inferior side of the

Differential effects of ambivalent visual-vestibular-somatosensory stimulation on the perception of self-motion.

The direction of perceived self-motion was determined as a function of combined visual-vestibular and vestibulo-somatosensory stimulations about the earth's vertical z-axis by means of a rotary chair and drum system. The predominant influence of concurrent antagonistic vestibular stimulation on circular vection (CV) even at small accelerations has been demonstrated by several studies in the past. The results of the present paper do not confirm the generally assumed influence of the vestibular system on exocentric motion perception, but instead produce evidence of the dominance of the visual ch

Central cholinergic mechanisms in electrical self-stimulation and in drug-induced tremor in rats.

Oxotremorine, a specific stimulant of central muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, inhibited lateral hypothalamic self-stimulation at a dose-level less than one-tenth of that necessary to produce body tremor. Tremor induced by oxotremorine (0.5 mg/kg) was inhibited by pretreatment with hyoscine (scopolamine) (0.3 mg/kg) or propranolol (20 mg/kg) but not by methylhyoscine (0.3 mg/kg) or apomorphine (0.3 mg/kg). Inhibition of self-stimulation by oxotremorine (.03 mg/kg) was prevented by hyoscine (0.3 mg/kg) but not by any other of the drugs tested and thus constitutes a uniquely specific in vivo

Level of care following suspected opioid or stimulant overdose with self-harm intent.

BACKGROUND: Overdose-related hospital utilization is influenced by both pharmacologic effects and psychosocial context. This multicenter subanalysis from the Drug Overdose Toxico-Surveillance (DOTS) Reporting Program assessed differences in care based on the intentionality of opioid and stimulant overdoses. METHODS: Data from 17 U.S. emergency departments (April 2023-September 2024) included 777 patients with confirmed opioid or stimulant overdoses, categorized as intentional (e.g., self-harm) or unintentional (e.g., recreational use, therapeutic error). Primary outcomes were hospital admissi

Treating Aggression and Self-destructive Behaviors by Stimulating the Nucleus Accumbens: A Case Series.

Self-destructive and aggressive behaviors can have a significant impact on the quality of life of affected individuals and their carrers. While deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been applied to the treatment of self-destructive and aggressive behaviors in isolated cases, clinical data on this treatment modality are still lacking. We therefore assessed responses to treatment with bilateral DBS of the nucleus accumbens in six patients with severe self-destructive and aggressive behaviors. Three patients had Tourette syndrome and three had other underlying predispositions including obsessive compu

Effects of repeated treatment with methcathinone, mephedrone, and fenfluramine on intracranial self-stimulation in rats.

RATIONALE: Synthetic cathinones constitute a class of abused drugs that can act at dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin transporters (DAT, NET, and SERT, respectively). Intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS) is a preclinical procedure that can be used to evaluate abuse potential of drugs, and prior studies have indicated that abuse-related ICSS effects of monoamine-transporter substrates, including some synthetic cathinones, are positively correlated with drug selectivity for DAT vs. SERT. Abuse potential of drugs can also be influenced by regimens of repeated drug exposure, but the role of r
