Self-Compassion Among Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Latent Profile Analysis.

Self-compassion is a core professional value in nursing and is positively associated with nursing students' psychological well-being, academic performance, and caring behaviors. However, heterogeneity and influencing factors in self-compassion among nursing undergraduates remain underexplored. This cross-sectional study investigated latent profiles of self-compassion and their associated factors among Chinese undergraduate nursing students. A total of 2004 participants completed a sociodemographic questionnaire and the self-compassion scale-short form. Latent profile analysis identified three

Self-other compassion disparities in evaluations of disordered eating behaviors.

Self-compassion has emerged as an effective framework for regulating the emotions underlying disordered eating. Yet little research has examined the barriers individuals face when extending compassion to themselves, particularly in subclinical populations at risk for disordered eating. Across three experiments, we investigated self-other differences in compassion and guilt in response to restrictive eating behaviors. In Study 1, participants (N = 103) evaluated restrictive eating behaviors enacted either by themselves or by a friend. Results revealed a robust self-friend discrepancy: participa

Adjusting Identities When Times Change: The Role of Self-Compassion.

Adjusting identity standards may be preferable to relentless pursuit or abandonment of an identity when facing an identity-challenging life transition. Self-compassion (SC) can help people adjust to challenges. The authors examined whether SC was associated with identity adjustment, exercise, and the moderating effect of identity-behavior discrepancy in 279 women exercisers who reported reduced exercise in motherhood. Participants completed the Self-Compassion Scale and reported the extent of and reflected on their identity discrepant behavior (reduced exercise). Reactions to discrepancy (acce

Compassion fatigue and satisfaction in post-earthquake psychosocial support providers: the roles of self-compassion, resilience, and mindfulness.

Earthquakes expose not only survivors but also support providers to significant psychological strain. Professionals delivering prolonged psychosocial support in post-disaster contexts may experience compassion fatigue, yet protective factors that enhance compassion satisfaction or reduce fatigue remain insufficiently examined. This study investigated the relationships among psychological resilience, mindfulness, compassion satisfaction, and compassion fatigue, and examined the mediating role of self-compassion in these associations. Participants were 125 psychosocial support providers (63 fema

"All you need is compassion?" a latent profile analysis of neglect and self-compassion on child mental health.

BACKGROUND: Neglect is a common form of child maltreatment and profoundly affects children's mental health globally. Self-compassion may help children cope with neglect but the role of self-compassion in neglect context has been understudied. This study identifies distinct patterns of self-compassion and child neglect and explores how neglect and self-compassion profiles correlate with child mental health. METHODS: The sample includes 3342 children aged 8-16 (49.6 % female) from a national survey of 29 provinces in China using a multistage sampling method. We used latent profile analysis to i

Mental health and self-compassion in military couples during wartime.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the mental health and resilience of combatants and their partners during the 2023 Israel-Hamas war, with a focus on self-compassion as a protective factor. While soldiers' mental health has been widely studied, the psychological burden on their partners, especially during active conflict, is less understood. The transition of reservists from civilian to combat roles, coupled with the upheaval faced by their families, provides a unique opportunity to assess resilience in this dyadic context. METHOD: A total of 134 couples (N = 268), combatants serving in Gaza and

Self-compassion and emotion regulation difficulties in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Lack of self-compassion and deficits in emotion regulation are associated with various psychopathological symptoms and may play a role in the development and maintenance of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, further empirical research is still needed to better understand these constructs in the context of this disorder. The present study investigated the relation between self-compassion, emotion regulation difficulties, obsessive beliefs, and obsessive-compulsive symptom severity in 90 patients with OCD using self-report questionnaires. Symptom severity and obsessive beliefs were ne

The Role of Compassion and Self-Compassion in Community Integration and Emotional Well-Being: A Systematic Review Focused on Homelessness.

Homelessness is widely regarded as one of the most severe forms of social exclusion and represents an urgent public health challenge. Notably, compassion has been proposed as a construct of social cognition closely linked to emotional well-being and as a facilitator of community integration. Although the importance of compassion within intervention teams and public attitudes toward people experiencing homelessness (PEH) has been emphasized, little is known about the processes of compassion and self-compassion among PEH. Hence, a systematic review was conducted with two main objectives: (a) to

The Effects of Virtual Reality on Enhancement of Self-Compassion and Self-Protection, and Reduction of Self-Criticism: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality used for the treatment of mental health disorders is showing promising potential in clinical practice. Increasing self-compassion and self-protections and decreasing self-criticism have been identified as trans-diagnostic mechanisms helping to build a resilient self. The goal of this systematic review was to provide an overview of research studies about virtual reality while exploring its effectiveness in increasing self-compassion and self-protection and decreasing self-criticism. Self-compassion and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activity during sad self-face recognition in depressed adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Given the prevalence of adolescent depression and the modest effects of current treatments, research ought to inform development of effective intervention strategies. Self-compassion is inversely associated with depression, and self-compassion interventions have demonstrated promising effects on reducing depression. However, little is known about the neural mechanisms underlying that relationship. Maladaptive self-processing is a characteristic of depression that contributes to the onset and chronicity of depression. Because our own face is an automatic and direct cue for self-proc

Common and distinct neural substrates of the compassionate and uncompassionate self-responding dimensions of self-compassion.

Self-compassion is beneficial for individuals' emotional health, but debates regarding its conceptualization are increasing. The present study aimed to explore the neural basis of self-compassion and its compassionate and uncompassionate dimensions and the indirect path from neural basis to emotional health. Structural MRI and Resting-state fMRI data were used to measure the gray matter volume (GMV) and the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) in 88 healthy college students. We found that individuals with higher self-compassion had decreased GMV in the prefrontal cortex, cerebellum as

Psychological Distress in Women with Fibromyalgia: The Roles of Body Appreciation, Self-Compassion, and Self-Criticism.

BACKGROUND: While past research detected a direct link between symptoms of fibromyalgia (FM) and psychological distress, body appreciation was suggested as a viable mediator of this link. The aim of the present study was to further develop an explanatory model for the effect of FM on women's psychological distress and identify possible protective and risk factors. Specifically, it was hypothesized that self-compassion would moderate the indirect effect of body appreciation and self-criticism on psychological distress in women with FM. METHOD: This study comprised a total of 293 women, aged 20

Association between self-compassion and perceived stress among undergraduate nursing students.

INTRODUCTION: Undergraduate nursing students are exposed to substantial academic and clinical stressors that may adversely affect their mental health and academic performance. Although self-compassion is considered a positive psychological resource, its association with perceived stress as a cognitive appraisal process has been insufficiently examined, particularly among nursing students. Accordingly, this study aimed to examine the association between self-compassion and perceived stress among undergraduate nursing students. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive-correlational study was cond

The association between self-compassion, affective temperament, and parental bonding styles.

INTRODUCTION: Self-compassion involves providing oneself with support during times of suffering or distress. It plays a significant role in an individual's life and mental well-being. This study aims to examine how affective temperament and parental bonding styles impact self-compassion in healthy participants. METHODS: This study investigated the effects of affective temperament and parental bonding style on self-compassion using data from 107 healthy participants. Multiple regression analyses were conducted using the stepwise method, with the total Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) scores as the

Self-compassion and psychological distress in chronic illness: A meta-analysis.

ObjectivesSelf-compassion is a positive psychological factor linked to improved physical and psychological outcomes across different chronic illness populations. However, the extent to which self-compassion contributes to reduced distress across different conditions or as a function of participant factors is not clear. The current meta-analysis aimed to quantify the association between self-compassion and psychological distress in different chronic illness populations and evaluate the factors that moderate this association.MethodsA systematic search of three electronic databases identified res

When Self-Compassion Lacks Ferocity: Anger and Responding to False Accusations.

OBJECTIVE: Self-compassion can help people when they make mistakes, but does it affect how people respond when falsely accused of making a mistake? In this research, we tested the hypothesis that self-compassion is associated with lower levels of anger after a false accusation which, in turn, lowers the likelihood that people will attempt to challenge the accusation. METHOD: In Studies 1A (N = 422) and 1B (N = 492), participants imagined that they were playing in an important tennis match and were falsely accused by an official of making an error. In Study 2 (N = 346), participants completed

Exploring self-compassion and eudaimonic well-being in young women athletes.

Using a mixed methods research design, we explored self-compassion and eudaimonic well-being in young women athletes. In a quantitative study (n = 83), we found that self-compassion and eudaimonic well-being were positively related (r = .76, p < .01). A model of multiple mediation was proposed, with self-compassion, passivity, responsibility, initiative, and self-determination accounting for 83% of the variance in eudaimonic well-being. In a qualitative study (n = 11), we explored when and how self-compassion might be useful in striving to reach one's potential in sport. Self-compassion was de

Shame, rumination, and self-compassion in men assessed for hypersexual disorder.

A number of studies have linked maladaptive shame to higher levels of hypersexual behavior and tendencies to ruminate. However, little research has examined factors that may attenuate the negative impact that shame and rumination may have on hypersexuality. Drawing on data collected from male patients (N=172) assessed for hypersexual disorder in a DSM-5 field trial, path analysis was used to explore relationships among shame, rumination, self-compassion, and hypersexual behavior. The findings from this study showed that self-compassion partially mediated the relationship between shame and rumi
