Design and implementation of the mobility assessment tool: software description.

BACKGROUND: In previous work, we described the development of an 81-item video-animated tool for assessing mobility. In response to criticism levied during a pilot study of this tool, we sought to develop a new version built upon a flexible framework for designing and administering the instrument. RESULTS: Rather than constructing a self-contained software application with a hard-coded instrument, we designed an XML schema capable of describing a variety of psychometric instruments. The new version of our video-animated assessment tool was then defined fully within the context of a compliant

Review of self-exclusion from gambling venues as an intervention for problem gambling.

Self-exclusion programs are required to be provided by gambling operators in many international jurisdictions in an attempt to provide an option for those who have gambling problems to avoid further gambling. However, minimal robust and comprehensive research has been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of self-exclusion programs. There is much scope for reform and greater cohesion between jurisdictions, particularly neighbouring jurisdictions that would offer greater protection to individuals and industry bodies. This review outlines the evidence surrounding existing self-exclusion strate

"It's like being in another world": demonstrating the benefits of therapeutic horseback riding for individuals with psychiatric disability.

Five adults with longstanding histories of psychiatric disabilities were recruited for a ten-week therapeutic horseback riding program. Individuals learned basic riding skills and had the opportunity to bond with a horse. In addition, the riders participated in a post-riding process group that used artistic and creative exercises to promote individual expression. By the end often weeks, the riders reported success in learning basic horsemanship and, in doing so, also reported additional psychosocial benefits, including an augmented sense of self-efficacy and self-esteem. In sum, this adjunctiv

Effects of a continuing education program on nurses' practices of cancer pain assessment and their acceptance of patients' pain reports.

A hospital-based quasi-experimental (pretest and post-test) study was conducted in Kaohsiung Veteran General Hospital, Taiwan. This study was to evaluate a continuing education program (CEP) on nurses' practices of cancer pain assessment and their acceptance of patients' pain reports with respect to four types of misconceptions. A questionnaire was sent to on-duty nurses or head nurses with patient care responsibilities before the implementation of CEP (n=645) and six months after the program (n=630). The response rates were 92.6% and 91.3% for pretest and post-test surveys, respectively. The

Inner Peace: Evaluating a Complementary Program Promoting Intra-Personal Peace at Adelaide Women's Prison, Australia.

The Peace Education Program, created in 2012, is a complementary program with potential to supplement official rehabilitation interventions offered in correctional centers. The program promotes "inner peace" as an innate and universal human resource, but whilst inner peace is a key concept in positive psychology and the Good Lives Model, there is a paucity of research regarding how to operationalize and evaluate this concept. The program had not previously been the subject of independent theoretically-informed research. Drawing on a mixed methods study conducted in Adelaide Women's Prison, thi

Nursing students' self-evaluation using a video recording of foley catheterization: effects on students' competence, communication skills, and learning motivation.

An opportunity for a student to evaluate his or her own performance enhances self-awareness and promotes self-directed learning. Using three outcome measures of competency of procedure, communication skills, and learning motivation, the effects of self-evaluation using a video recording of the student's Foley catheterization was investigated in this study. The students in the experimental group (n = 20) evaluated their Foley catheterization performance by reviewing the video recordings of their own performance, whereas students in the control group (n = 20) received written evaluation guidelin

An overview of training curricula for diabetes peer educators.

Global community members who experience similar health problems gravitate to each other for information and support. Peers may be more approachable and can relate to the particular living circumstances one experiences. In well-resourced countries, people have opportunities for learning diabetes self-management; however, empathy may be more helpful when practical barriers arise. Little is published in medical literature about how to foster diabetes peer support and what is published is often limited to English language. Among those programs available, commonalities are readily seen. There is si

How sustainable are self-help interventions in the post-funding period? Qualitative findings from integrated leprosy communities in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Time-limited, externally funded self-help groups (receiving training, equipment and access to seeds) are typically evaluated during the funding period. However, their sustainability beyond this phase remains understudied. METHODS: This retrospective qualitative study explored the post-funding sustainability of two 6-y self-help interventions (2013-2019) for groups in integrated leprosy communities in central Nigeria. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 40 stakeholders (beneficiaries, implementers and funders) and supplemented by document analysis. RESULTS: Findings rev
