Anxiety, depression, and self-management: a systematic review.

The purpose of this article was to address the clinically relevant question: In the presence of anxiety and/or depression, do patients who have had heart surgery engage in self-management behaviors following hospital discharge? A systematic review of 16 studies that examined the psychological condition of patients who had coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) and/or valvular replacement surgery was conducted. Moderate to severe levels of anxiety and depression exist during the first month of home recovery and appear to have an effect on performance of self-management behaviors. As the influence

Patient self-management of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion.

Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) is one of the ways to control blood glucose for prolonged periods. This study was undertaken to establish the long-term feasibility and efficacy of CSII with patient self-management. Patients were instructed to maintain their calorie and carbohydrate intake. Basal infusion of insulin, representing 50% of the total pre-CSII dose, was supplemented by boluses of insulin based on carbohydrate intake for each meal. With this type of regimen, blood glucose and M-values were easily normalized during the physician-directed periods. This study demonstrate

Implementing breathlessness self-management in low- and middle-income countries: co-design of breathlessness self-management resources for use in India.

Breathlessness is prevalent in societies worldwide, with widespread health and socioeconomic impacts. Breathlessness self-management interventions developed in high-income countries (HICs) are promising but require contextual adaptation for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like India, where cultural beliefs, language, and delivery systems differ. We co-designed breathlessness self-management resources for use in India using a programme theory approach and Community-Based Participatory Research methods. We convened three stakeholder groups (Doctors (n = 9), Nurses and allied health (n =
