Functional anatomy of a common semantic system for words and pictures.

The relationship between the semantic processing of words and of pictures is a matter of debate among cognitive scientists. We studied the functional anatomy of such processing by using positron-emission tomography (PET). We contrasted activity during two semantic tasks (probing knowledge of associations between concepts, and knowledge of the visual attributes of these concepts) and a baseline task (discrimination of physical stimulus size), performed either with words or with pictures. Modality-specific activations unrelated to semantic processing occurred in the left inferior parietal lobule

A case series of verbal semantic processing in primary progressive aphasia: Evidence from the N400 effect.

BACKGROUND: The semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is typically associated with a loss of semantic knowledge. Research on the semantic processing in the other clinical variants of PPA is, however, rather sparse and limited to off-line behavioural studies. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate verbal semantic processing in patients with the three variants of PPA by the event-related potential technique. The presence, latency, amplitude and/or topographic distribution of the N400 effect may be helpful in the diagnosis of PPA and its clinical variants and it provides temporal

Remote semantic memory in patients with Korsakoff's syndrome and herpes encephalitis.

Performance of patients with Korsakoff's syndrome and herpes encephalitis was compared on a retrograde amnesia (RA) test, asking subjects to recall and recognize the definitions of words that had come into the language at different time periods. Performance was also compared on a related test in which participants were asked to produce the words to definitions they were given in free recall and cued recall versions. It was hypothesized that, if the temporal gradient in remote memory results from a shift of information from episodic to semantic memory, then there should be a temporal gradient o

Potential role of monkey inferior parietal neurons coding action semantic equivalences as precursors of parts of speech.

The anterior portion of the inferior parietal cortex possesses comprehensive representations of actions embedded in behavioural contexts. Mirror neurons, which respond to both self-executed and observed actions, exist in this brain region in addition to those originally found in the premotor cortex. We found that parietal mirror neurons responded differentially to identical actions embedded in different contexts. Another type of parietal mirror neuron represents an inverse and complementary property of responding equally to dissimilar actions made by itself and others for an identical purpose.

Divergent and convergent creativity relate to different aspects of semantic control.

Past work has demonstrated a link between semantic memory and verbal creativity. Yet, few studies have considered this relationship through the lens of the controlled semantic cognition account, which anticipates that multimodal concepts in long-term memory interact with semantic control processes to generate goal and context-appropriate patterns of retrieval. In particular, while the creativity literature has distinguished divergent and convergent aspects of creativity, little is known about their relationship with separable aspects of semantic control, or the semantic intrinsic functional ar

Apraxia profiles-A single cognitive marker to discriminate all variants of frontotemporal lobar degeneration and Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Apraxia is common in neurodegenerative dementias but underrepresented in clinical workup for differential diagnoses. METHODS: Praxis-profiles were assessed with the Dementia Apraxia Test in 93 patients with early stages of biologically supported Alzheimer's disease or frontotemporal lobar degeneration: semantic primary-progressive aphasia, nonfluent primary-progressive aphasia, and behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia. Associations with core cognitive deficits of the dementia subtypes (i.e., visuospatial, sociocognitive, and semantic-linguistic) were explored. RESULTS: Pa

Lexical learning in mild aphasia: gesture benefit depends on patholinguistic profile and lesion pattern.

Gestures accompany speech and enrich human communication. When aphasia interferes with verbal abilities, gestures become even more relevant, compensating for and/or facilitating verbal communication. However, small-scale clinical studies yielded diverging results with regard to a therapeutic gesture benefit for lexical retrieval. Based on recent functional neuroimaging results, delineating a speech-gesture integration network for lexical learning in healthy adults, we hypothesized that the commonly observed variability may stem from differential patholinguistic profiles in turn depending on le

Can lexical properties of words produced on a semantic fluency task distinguish older adults with cognitive decline from older adults with stable cognitive scores?

INTRODUCTION: Deficits in semantic fluency are commonly observed across many types of dementia. However, deficits in semantic fluency are not always representative of a decline in language skills. Prior studies have suggested that the examination of the lexical properties of words produced on semantic fluency tasks may reveal disruptions in discrete cognitive processes that could assist in the detection of specific types of dementia. METHOD: The mean word frequency, age of acquisition, and phonological neighborhood size of items generated on a semantic fluency task (fruits and vegetables) wer

MR-Based Radiomics for Differential Diagnosis between Cystic Pituitary Adenoma and Rathke Cleft Cyst.

BACKGROUND: It is often tricky to differentiate cystic pituitary adenoma from Rathke cleft cyst with visual inspection because of similar MRI presentations between them. We aimed to design an MR-based radiomics model for improving differential diagnosis between them. METHODS: Conventional diagnostic MRI data (T1-,T2-, and postcontrast T1-weighted MR images) were obtained from 215 pathologically confirmed patients (105 cases with cystic pituitary adenoma and the other 110 cases with Rathke cleft cyst) and were divided into training (n = 172) and test sets (n = 43). MRI radiomics features were

A patient with difficulty of object recognition: semantic amnesia for manipulable objects.

We studied a patient who had recognition difficulty for manipulable objects. MRI showed a lesion in the left occipito-parietotemporal area. Differential diagnosis of agnosia, aphasia and apraxia is discussed. We believe this "object meaning amnesia" constitutes a distinct subtype of semantic amnesia.

Disorganised schizotypy is selectively associated with poorer semantic processing in non-clinical individuals.

The nature and severity of semantic memory (SM) impairments in schizophrenia has been related to symptoms, mainly formal thought disorder (FTD), and other clinical factors like length of illness. Symptom-related studies in schizophrenia are often confounded by clinical factors, for example medication and hospitalisations. We completed a schizotypy analogue study to examine the relationship between SM processing and FTD using an analogue schizotypy score referred to as cognitive disorganisation. Sixty individuals without a history of mental illness (M=22.92, SD=2.70) completed a schizotypy ques

Semantic Intrusion Error Ratio Distinguishes Between Cognitively Impaired and Cognitively Intact African American Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Semantic intrusion errors on memory tests may represent very early cognitive changes associated with elevated Alzheimer's disease pathology within the brain, including amyloid-β (Aβ). Subscales that measure proactive semantic interference (PSI) and intrusions related to PSI on the Loewenstein Acevedo Scales of Semantic Interference and Learning (LASSI-L) have been associated with high levels of brain amyloid load, structural changes on brain MRI in Hispanic and non-Hispanic groups. It is presently unknown whether intrusion errors or other measures of the LASSI-L can differentiate b

Changes in semantic memory in early stage Alzheimer's disease patients.

The types and number of exemplars of categories that are retrieved from semantic memory differentiate elderly normal controls and early stage Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. Elderly normal controls generated more uncommon exemplars from closed semantic categories (fruits and vegetables) than did AD patients 2 1/2 years prior to the presumed onset of AD. AD patients, however, were just as productive as elderly normal controls in generating associations to open categories (letters). The findings suggest that one of the early cognitive symptoms of AD is changes in availability of uncommon exem

Semantic fluency: cognitive basis and diagnostic performance in focal dementias and Alzheimer's disease.

Semantic fluency is widely used both as a clinical test and as a basic tool for understanding how humans extract information from the semantic store. Recently, major efforts have been made to devise fine-grained scoring procedures to measure the multiple cognitive processes underlying fluency performance. Nevertheless, it is still unclear how many and which independent components are necessary to thoroughly describe performance on the fluency task. Furthermore, whether a combination of multiple indices can improve the diagnostic performance of the test should be assessed. In this study, we ext

Handedness and language learning disability differentially distribute in progressive aphasia variants.

Primary progressive aphasia is a neurodegenerative clinical syndrome that presents in adulthood with an isolated, progressive language disorder. Three main clinical/anatomical variants have been described, each associated with distinctive pathology. A high frequency of neurodevelopmental learning disability in primary progressive aphasia has been reported. Because the disorder is heterogeneous with different patterns of cognitive, anatomical and biological involvement, we sought to identify whether learning disability had a predilection for one or more of the primary progressive aphasia subtyp

Explicit semantic tasks are necessary to study semantic priming effects with high rates of repetition.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to clarify in which experimental conditions the semantic processing of repeated words is preserved. METHODS: We contrasted a short (250 ms) and a long (1000 ms) stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) in two different experiments, using a relatively low proportion of related words (30%). One group of participants performed a lexical decision task (LDT) and a second group performed an explicit semantic matching task with the same words (except for pseudowords) and the same task parameters. In both tasks, word stimuli consisted solely of two prime and two

Autobiographical memory impairment in genetic generalized epilepsies: neurocognitive and pathophysiological determinants.

The neuropsychological breakdowns of autobiographical memory (AM) in adults suffering from genetic generalized epilepsy (GGE) are far from being understood and largely neglected. We aimed at identifying AM impairments in GGE by analyzing neurocognitive deficits in illness-related variables possibly affecting AM.Patients with GGE were compared to healthy controls (HCs), through semistructured interviews on AM, as well as neuropsychological measures to identify potential determinants of AM impairment.A single GGE group was formed by including patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME), juven

Sensitive Measures of Cognition in Mild Cognitive Impairment.

BACKGROUND: Sensitive measures of cognition are needed in preclinical and prodromal Alzheimer's disease (AD) to track cognitive change and evaluate potential interventions. Neurofibrillary tangle pathology in AD is first observed in Brodmann Area 35 (BA35), the medial portion of the perirhinal cortex. The importance of the perirhinal cortex for semantic memory may explain early impairments of semantics in preclinical AD. Additionally, our research has tied figurative language impairment to neurodegenerative disease. OBJECTIVE: We aim to identify tasks that are sensitive to cognitive impairmen

The right superior temporal gyrus plays a role in semantic-rule learning: Evidence supporting a reinforcement learning model.

In real-life communication, individuals use language that carries evident rewarding and punishing elements, such as praise and criticism. A common trend is to seek more praise while avoiding criticism. Furthermore, semantics is crucial for conveying information, but such semantic access to native and foreign languages is subtly distinct. To investigate how rule learning occurs in different languages and to highlight the importance of semantics in this process, we investigated both verbal and non-verbal rule learning in first (L1) and second (L2) languages using a reinforcement learning framewo

Bridging the Gap Between Language and Literacy: Evidence from Interventions in Young Greek-Speaking Children with Developmental Language Disorder.

Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent difficulties in language acquisition, affecting both comprehension and production, and typically emerging in early childhood through deficits in morphosyntax, vocabulary and phonology. Although distinct from Specific Learning Disabilities, particularly in reading, the two conditions often co-occur, sharing underlying mechanisms and leading to overlapping challenges such as impaired phonological processing, limited vocabulary, weak narrative skills, and reading comprehension difficulties.
