Embodied Semantics: Early Simultaneous Motor Grounding in First and Second Languages.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Although the embodiment of action-related language is well-established in the mother tongue (L1), less is known about the embodiment of a second language (L2) acquired later in life through formal instruction. We used the high temporal resolution of ERPs and topographic ERP analyses to compare embodiment in L1 and L2 and to investigate whether L1 and L2 are embodied with different strengths at different stages of linguistic processing. METHODS: Subjects were presented with action-related and non-action-related verbs in a silent reading task. Subjects were late French-Ge

Can Boys Have Turner Syndrome? More than a Question of Semantics.

Individuals with 45,X mosaicism with Y chromosome material raised as boys are not diagnosed with Turner syndrome, a label restricted to phenotypic females. We sought to determine if boys with 45,X mosaicism had features consistent with Turner syndrome. Twenty-two patients (14 girls, 8 boys) seen in our Differences of Sex Development (DSD) clinic were identified for review. Standardized height (z-scores) by sex of rearing and results of cardiology, renal, audiology, thyroid, and celiac screenings were recorded. All subjects had heights below the mean for sex. Z-scores were not significantly dif

Visual imagery and visual semantics in the cerebral hemispheres in schizophrenia.

Divided visual field tasks were given to normal subjects, and patients with schizophrenia and affective disorder, to investigate hemisphere differences in the visual processing of standardised pictorial stimuli. There were two conditions: in the first, subjects were asked to decide whether a common entity represented by a picture was living or non-living, a task involving a categorical judgement based on semantic information; a left hemisphere task. In the second condition, subjects judged whether these depictions represented entities which were bigger or smaller than a cat; a right hemisphere

Valence as principal dimension of the semantic space in primary progressive aphasia semantic variant.

Previous studies of the semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia have determined which word features render single words more vulnerable. Here, we applied a graph-based approach and modelled the pathological changes at the network level. In healthy individuals, the two principal dimensions for the organization of the word meaning network are concreteness and valence. Ten semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia cases (mean age 66 years, 6 female, Clinical Dementia Rating: 3 patients = 0; 6 patients = 0.5; 1 patient = 1) participated as well as 79 matched controls. Towards a genetics of semantics? False memories and semantic memory organization in Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorder caused by microdeletion of a critical region on chromosome 7q11.23. At the cognitive level, it is usually characterized by moderate intellectual disability and deficits in visuospatial skills, while showing relative strengths in verbal skills and nonverbal reasoning. Despite their apparent good performance with verbal skills, previous studies have suggested that the structure of semantic memory may be altered in people diagnosed with WS. In this study, we explored the organization of semantic memory in WS through the Deese-Ro

Semantic behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia and semantic dementia associated with TARDBP mutations.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a highly heritable group of neurodegenerative disorders, characterized by varying clinical and pathological features. TARDBP gene has been described worldwide within the FTD/ALS spectrum but its association with right and left temporal variant of FTD (tvFTD) is still unclear. This study aimed to reclassify a Sardinian FTD cohort according to proposed criteria for the semantic behavioral variant FTD (sbvFTD), explore TARDBP mutations' association with tvFTD, and review related literature. From our FTD cohort of 94 patients, ten fulfilled the criteria for sbvFTD.

The shared and unique neural correlates of personal semantic, general semantic, and episodic memory.

One of the most common distinctions in long-term memory is that between semantic (i.e., general world knowledge) and episodic (i.e., recollection of contextually specific events from one's past). However, emerging cognitive neuroscience data suggest a surprisingly large overlap between the neural correlates of semantic and episodic memory. Moreover, personal semantic memories (i.e., knowledge about the self and one's life) have been studied little and do not easily fit into the standard semantic-episodic dichotomy. Here, we used fMRI to record brain activity while 48 participants verified stat

Coexistence of the social semantic effect and non-semantic effect in the default mode network.

Neuroimaging studies have found both semantic and non-semantic effects in the default mode network (DMN), leading to an intense debate on the role of the DMN in semantic processes. Four different views have been proposed: (1) the general semantic view holds that the DMN contains several hub regions supporting general semantic processes; (2) the non-semantic view holds that the semantic effects observed in the DMN (especially the ventral angular gyrus) are confounded by difficulty and do not reflect semantic processing per se; (3) the multifunction view holds that the same areas in the DMN can

Incidental Verbal Semantic Processing Recruits the Fronto-temporal Semantic Control Network.

The frontoparietal semantic network, encompassing the inferior frontal gyrus and the posterior middle temporal cortex, is considered to be involved in semantic control processes. The explicit versus implicit nature of these control processes remains however poorly understood. The present study examined this question by assessing regional brain responses to the semantic attributes of an unattended stream of auditory words while participants' top-down attentional control processes were absorbed by a demanding visual search task. Response selectivity to semantic aspects of verbal stimuli was asse

Reading and visual word recognition ability in semantic dementia is not predicted by semantic performance.

This paper describes longitudinal testing of two Semantic Dementia (SD) cases. It is common for patients with SD to present with deficits in reading aloud irregular words (i.e. surface dyslexia), and in lexical decision. Theorists from the connectionist tradition (e.g. Woollams et al., 2007) argue that in SD cases with concurrent surface dyslexia, the deterioration of irregular word reading and recognition performance is related to the extent of the deterioration of the semantic system. The Dual Route Cascaded model (DRC; Coltheart et al., 2001) makes no such prediction. We examined this issue

Semantic Typicality Effects in Acquired Dyslexia: Evidence for Semantic Impairment in Deep Dyslexia.

BACKGROUND: Acquired deep dyslexia is characterized by impairment in grapheme-phoneme conversion and production of semantic errors in oral reading. Several theories have attempted to explain the production of semantic errors in deep dyslexia, some proposing that they arise from impairments in both grapheme-phoneme and lexical-semantic processing, and others proposing that such errors stem from a deficit in phonological production. Whereas both views have gained some acceptance, the limited evidence available does not clearly eliminate the possibility that semantic errors arise from a lexical-s

A single-system account of semantic and lexical deficits in five semantic dementia patients.

In semantic dementia (SD), there is a correlation between performance on semantic tasks such as picture naming and lexical tasks such as reading aloud. However, there have been a few case reports of patients with spared reading despite profound semantic impairment. These reports have sparked an ongoing debate about how the brain processes conceptual versus lexical knowledge. One possibility is that there are two functionally distinct systems in the brain-one for semantic and one for lexical processing. Alternatively, there may be a single system involved in both. We present a computational inv

How the intrinsic functional connectivity patterns of the semantic network support semantic processing.

Semantic processing, a core of language comprehension, involves the activation of brain regions dispersed extensively across the frontal, temporal, and parietal cortices that compose the semantic network. To comprehend the functional structure of this semantic network and how it prepares for semantic processing, we investigated its intrinsic functional connectivity (FC) and the relation between this pattern and semantic processing ability in a large sample from the Human Connectome Project (HCP) dataset. We first defined a well-studied brain network for semantic processing, and then we charact

Semantic dementia without surface dyslexia in Spanish: unimpaired reading with impaired semantics.

Surface dyslexia has been attributed to an overreliance on the sub-lexical route for reading. Typically, surface dyslexic patients commit regularisation errors when reading irregular words. Also, semantic dementia has often been associated with surface dyslexia, leading to some explanations of the reading impairment that stress the role of semantics in irregular word reading. Nevertheless, some patients have been reported with unimpaired ability to read irregular words, even though they show severe comprehension impairment. We present the case of M.B., the first Spanish-speaking semantic demen

The compositionality of lexical semantic representations: clues from semantic errors in object naming.

We present evidence that semantic errors in object naming can arise not only from impairment to the semantic system but also from damage to input and output processes. Although each of these levels of disruption can result in similar types of semantic errors in object naming, they have different types of consequences for performance on other lexical tasks, such as comprehension and naming to definition. We show that the analysis of the co-occurrence of semantic errors in naming with different patterns of performance in other lexical processing tasks can be used to localise the source of semant

Refractory semantics in global aphasia: on semantic organisation and the access-storage distinction in neuropsychology.

A single case study is reported of a global aphasic patient, JM, with impaired access to semantic information which was particularly severe for the class of proper names. JM's ability to perform matching tasks with printed words and pictures to auditory words deteriorated when items were repeated, especially when the response-stimulus interval was short. Performance was also inconsistent across items. The effect of repeated testing on items generalised to other, previously untested members of the same category. Despite this, JM was able to access general semantic information about stimuli from

Moving beyond 5-HT2A: language models map neurotransmitter receptors to experiential semantics.

RATIONALE: Psychedelics exhibit rapid, durable therapeutic effects across diverse psychiatric conditions, yet their broad-spectrum psychoactivity poses challenges for clinical translation. OBJECTIVES: As a proof-of-concept, we aimed to quantify associations between 19 neurotransmitter receptors and the subjective effects of 21 psychedelic drugs with broadly assayed binding profiles. METHODS: We used a custom Global Vectors for Word Representation (GloVe)-based semantic embedding model trained on 4,496 firsthand experience reports and integrated it with receptor affinities to identify candida

Multi-label tongue image classification via label semantics-driven feature interaction enhancement.

Multilabel classification of tongue images plays a pivotal role in intelligent diagnosis within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), enabling clinical decision-making through systematic analysis of the intricate relationships between tongue characteristics and pathological conditions. However, existing methods face critical imitations: (1) inadequate exploitation of label semantic information and local feature representations, leading to suboptimal cross-modal interaction efficiency; and (2) neglect of synergistic and complementary mechanism among hierarchical features (e.g., holistic and detai

Embodied Cognition of Manipulative Actions: Subliminal Grasping Semantics Enhance Using-Action Recognition.

Background: Grasping actions, owing to their manipulated nature, play a central role in research on embodied action language. However, their foundational contribution to the cognition of using actions remains debated. This study examined the relationship between grasping and using actions from the perspective of subthreshold semantic processing. Methods: Participants engaged with objects affording both action types while behavioral responses and event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded. Semantic congruency between subliminally presented grasping verbs and the actions of target objects was
