PURPOSE: To evaluate the success rates of sclerotherapy of the tunica vaginalis with alcohol for the treatment of hydroceles and/or spermatoceles, as well as, evaluation of pain, formation of hematomas, infection and its effects in spermatogenesis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 69 patients, with offsprings and diagnosis of hydrocele and/or spermatocele, were treated during the period from April 2003 to June 2007. PURPOSE: The main indications for adolescent varicocelectomy are testicular hypotrophy or pain. However, we have previously shown that both serial total testicular volume and volume differential are weakly associated with semen quality. The ultimate patient goal is paternity, but semen analysis is critical to appropriate management of varicocele. We hypothesize that varicocelectomy improves total motile count (TMC) among patients who only have abnormal semen analysis (SA) parameters, but not among those with potential hormonal dysfunction such as Klinefelter syndrome or cryptorchidism.

BACKGROUND: Standard semen analysis has little prognostic value in distinguishing fertile from infertile men. Furthermore, in men with semen parameters within the reference ranges, it cannot distinguish fertile men from infertile men, i.e. partners of couples with idiopathic infertility. Oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, sperm telomere shortening, and DNA fragmentation have been proposed as contributors to impaired male fertility. However, these biomarkers have not been evaluated as a whole in subjects with normal semen parameters, partners of fertile and infertile couples.

In a retrospective analysis of 508 ejaculates from 297 dogs, efficiency of semen cryopreservation and effects of age, season and dog size on characteristics of fresh and cryopreserved semen were evaluated. Volume of the sperm-rich ejaculate fraction increased to 10 years of age, decreased in 10 and 11-year old dogs (P < 0.001) but did not differ among seasons. Total sperm count was less in 10 and 11-year-old dogs (P < 0.001).
