Fractality of sensations and the brain health: the theory linking neurodegenerative disorder with distortion of spatial and temporal scale-invariance and fractal complexity of the visible world.

The theory that ties normal functioning and pathology of the brain and visual system with the spatial-temporal structure of the visual and other sensory stimuli is described for the first time in the present study. The deficit of fractal complexity of environmental influences can lead to the distortion of fractal complexity in the visual pathways of the brain and abnormalities of development or aging. The use of fractal light stimuli and fractal stimuli of other modalities can help to restore the functions of the brain, particularly in the elderly and in patients with neurodegenerative disorde

Interictal perceptual function in epilepsy.

Epilepsy can affect perception. Ictal perceptual experiences are common, but interictal perceptual function may also be affected. This article reviews the English-language literature on interictal perceptual disturbances in epilepsy. Although most studies report impaired perceptual ability, heightened sensitivity has also been described. There is a compelling, though not absolute, correlation between affected sensory modality and underlying epilepsy syndrome. Olfaction is clearly affected in temporal lobe epilepsy, while visual information processing is disturbed in occipital lobe epilepsy. Th

Sensory Changes Related to Swallowing in Motor Neurone Disease.

Dysphagia is common in motor neurone disease (MND) and associated with negative health and psychosocial outcomes. Although largely considered a motor disease, a growing body of evidence suggests that MND can also affect the sensory system. As intact sensation is vital for safe swallowing, and sensory changes can influence the clinical management of dysphagia in people living with MND, this review evaluated and summarised the current evidence for sensory changes related to swallowing in MND. Of 3,481 articles originally identified, 29 met the inclusion criteria. Of these, 20 studies reported se

Use of Cervical Ultrasonography in Globus Sensation Investigation: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: A globus sensation is one of the most common complaints in otolaryngological practice. Patients with no associated abnormalities detected during the usual examinations performed in ENT clinics, are being diagnosed with globus sensation. Cervical ultrasonography is usually not performed in ENT clinics; however, it is useful in screening diseases of the subcutaneous tissue/organs, whose detection is not possible with the routine ENT examinations. The purpose of our study was to elucidate whether cervical ultrasound examination identifies abnormalities in patients with globus sensatio

Oesophageal hypersensitivity is associated with features of psychiatric disorders and the irritable bowel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Twenty per cent of patients with heartburn do not respond to proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Many have normal oesophageal acid exposure. We hypothesized that such PPI non-responders have heightened oesophageal sensation, and that oesophageal hypersensitivity is associated with psychiatric features including somatization and anxiety. AIM: To compare oesophageal sensation in subjects with heartburn categorized by response to PPI, and to correlate oesophageal sensation with psychiatric features. METHODS: Twenty-one PPI responders, nine PPI non-responders and 20 healthy volunteers com

A bedside sensory phenomenon that can help explain functional sensory symptoms.

Explaining basic illness mechanisms is an important step in communicating functional neurological symptoms. Clinical signs for motor symptoms, such as the Hoover test, have proven an excellent basis for mechanistic explanations. Here, I recommend a simple technique for eliciting tingling sensations through directed bodily attention, as a helpful experiential starting point for explanations of sensory gating and somatosensory amplification in patients with functional hyperaesthesia, paraesthesia and chronic pain.

The role of sensory information in the pathophysiology of focal dystonias.

Over the past few decades, abnormalities in sensory functions, such as tactile, proprioceptive and nociceptive processing, have been increasingly recognized in patients with focal dystonias. In this Review, we ask whether sensory system abnormalities are specific to particular types of dystonia, whether a causal link exists between sensory alterations and dystonic motor activity and how mechanisms underlying the sensory abnormalities fit in with the proposed 'network model' of dystonia. We suggest that alterations in the various sensory modalities participate at three different levels in the p

Smell, taste and trigeminal disorders in a 65-year-old population.

BACKGROUND: Smell, taste and trigeminal disorders likely have a substantial impact on human daily life. However, data regarding the prevalence of these disorders in Norway are scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of smell, taste, trigeminal disorders and associated factors in a 65-year-old population in Oslo, Norway. METHODS: A random sample of 223 individuals (123 men, 100 women) participated in the study. Medical history was obtained, and unstimulated whole saliva (UWS) and stimulated whole saliva (SWS) were collected to determine salivary secretion rates. Sniffin

Cutaneous sensory function in diabetes mellitus.

That disorders of cutaneous sensation are common in diabetes mellitus can be substantiated by quantitative cutaneous sensory testing. Cutaneous sensory disturbances are not clearly related to clinical factors such as the type, treatment, or duration of diabetes, or ocular complications. Diabetics can be distinguished from nondiabetics on quantitative examination of skin sensation. Juvenile diabetics appear to have fewer cutaneous abnormalities than adults who develop the disease, but the juvenile diabetic is not spared. Disorders of cutaneous sensation may represent a fundamental abnormality o

Impulsivity and Early Initiation of Sexual Behaviors in Adolescents with Externalizing Disorders.

Impulsivity, a multidimensional construct characterized by rash decision-making and difficulty delaying gratification, is a trait of externalizing disorders (e.g., attention-deficit/hyperactivity, disruptive, oppositional defiant, and conduct disorders) and has been associated with risk-taking behaviors. However, its association with risky sexual behaviors in this population remains limited. This observational study examined the association between impulsivity and early sexual behaviors in 96 adolescents (male n = 63) with externalizing disorders. Impulsivity at baseline was assessed using the

Value of Quantitative Sensory Testing in the Evaluation of Genital Sensation: Its Application to Female Sexual Dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is multifactorial, with psychological and organic elements. Genital sensation, an important component of sexual response, has until recently not been subjected to adequate clinical appraisal. During the past 15 years we have performed Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST) to assess genital sensation in healthy women and women with FSD. AIM: To review available evidence of QST in the investigation of genital sensation in women with FSD. METHODS: We examined data obtained from assessment of genital sensation in normal women and those with different co
