[Age-related changes of microcirculation in pia mater of rats' sensorimotor cortex].

We studied the density of whole microvascular network and separately the density of arterioles in the pia mater of sensorimotor cortex of rats of different ages. Also pial arteriolar reactivity on exposure to norepinephrine or acetylcholine chloride was evaluated. The microvascular density and the arteriolar reactivity in the pia mater were not significantly changed before the age of 12 months. In the age of 22-24 months the density of whole microvascular network decreased 1,7 times at the mean and the density of arterioles decreased 1,2 times. There were no significant changes of pia arteriol

Functional magnetic resonance imaging mapping of the sensorimotor cortex with tactile stimulation.

The purpose of this study is to compare tactile stimulation of the palm with voluntary movement of the fingers as paradigms for mapping the sensorimotor cortex in functional magnetic resonance imaging. In 22 subjects, 24 sets of functional magnetic resonance images were obtained with echoplanar acquisitions and cross-correlation image processing techniques. Two tasks were employed: a motor task in which subjects moved the thumb and index finger of one hand and a sensory task in which the palm was scratched by another person. The activation from the two tasks coincided entirely in 20 sets and p

Role of the parietal cortex for sensorimotor transformation. Evidence from clinical observations.

Somatosensory and motor functions of both hands were examined in 10 patients with unilateral parietal cortex lesions as revealed by computerized tomography. Tests of elementary somatosensory functions comprised surface sensibility, vibration, and position sense. For evaluation of complex somatosensory functions, the recognition of surface textures and object forms was tested. Motor performance was examined by measuring force and position control as well as manipulative and explorative motor behaviour. All patients showed varying degrees of sensory disturbance. Although the patients had no or m

Pallidal Deep Brain Stimulation Reduces Sensorimotor Cortex Activation in Focal/Segmental Dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Although deep brain stimulation of the globus pallidus internus (GPi-DBS) is an established treatment for many forms of dystonia, including generalized as well as focal forms, its effects on brain (dys-)function remain to be elucidated, particularly for focal and segmental dystonia. Clinical response to GPi-DBS typically comes with some delay and lasts up to several days, sometimes even weeks, once stimulation is discontinued. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated how neural activity during rest and motor activation is affected by GPi-DBS while excluding the potential confound of alt

Kv2 channels regulate firing rate in pyramidal neurons from rat sensorimotor cortex.

The largest outward potassium current in the soma of neocortical pyramidal neurons is due to channels containing Kv2.1 α subunits. These channels have been implicated in cellular responses to seizures and ischaemia, mechanisms for intrinsic plasticity and cell death, and responsiveness to anaesthetic agents. Despite their abundance, knowledge of the function of these delayed rectifier channels has been limited by the lack of specific pharmacological agents. To test for functional roles of Kv2 channels in pyramidal cells from somatosensory or motor cortex of rats (layers 2/3 or 5), we transfect

3D directional tuning in the orofacial sensorimotor cortex during natural feeding and drinking.

Directional tongue movements are crucial for feeding and speech, ensuring proper food positioning for chewing and swallowing, as well as accurate sound production. While directional tuning in the arm region of the sensorimotor cortex during reaching tasks is well-studied, little is known about how 3D tongue direction is encoded in the orofacial sensorimotor cortex (OSMCx) during natural behaviors. Understanding this neural representation has important implications for rehabilitating individuals with orolingual dysfunctions. This study examines the directional tuning and population dynamics in

Acute stress impairs sensorimotor gating via the neurosteroid allopregnanolone in the prefrontal cortex.

Ample evidence indicates that environmental stress impairs information processing, yet the underlying mechanisms remain partially elusive. We showed that, in several rodent models of psychopathology, the neurosteroid allopregnanolone (AP) reduces the prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the startle, a well-validated index of sensorimotor gating. Since this GABAA receptor activator is synthesized in response to acute stress, we hypothesized its participation in stress-induced PPI deficits. Systemic AP administration reduced PPI in C57BL/6J mice and Long-Evans, but not Sprague-Dawley rats. These effects

Modulating dream experience: Noninvasive brain stimulation over the sensorimotor cortex reduces dream movement.

Recently, cortical correlates of specific dream contents have been reported, such as the activation of the sensorimotor cortex during dreamed hand clenching. Yet, despite a close resemblance of such activation patterns to those seen during the corresponding wakeful behaviour, the causal mechanisms underlying specific dream contents remain largely elusive. Here, we aimed to investigate the causal role of the sensorimotor cortex in generating movement and bodily sensations during REM sleep dreaming. Following bihemispheric transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) or sham stimulation, guide

Noninvasive neurostimulation of left ventral motor cortex enhances sensorimotor adaptation in speech production.

Sensorimotor adaptation-enduring changes to motor commands due to sensory feedback-allows speakers to match their articulations to intended speech acoustics. How the brain integrates auditory feedback to modify speech motor commands and what limits the degree of these modifications remain unknown. Here, we investigated the role of speech motor cortex in modifying stored speech motor plans. In a within-subjects design, participants underwent separate sessions of sham and anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over speech motor cortex while speaking and receiving altered auditory

Functional links between sensory representations, choice activity, and sensorimotor associations in parietal cortex.

Three-dimensional (3D) representations of the environment are often critical for selecting actions that achieve desired goals. The success of these goal-directed actions relies on 3D sensorimotor transformations that are experience-dependent. Here we investigated the relationships between the robustness of 3D visual representations, choice-related activity, and motor-related activity in parietal cortex. Macaque monkeys performed an eight-alternative 3D orientation discrimination task and a visually guided saccade task while we recorded from the caudal intraparietal area using laminar probes. W

Functional Architecture and Encoding of Tactile Sensorimotor Behavior in Rat Posterior Parietal Cortex.

The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) in rodents is reciprocally connected to primary somatosensory and vibrissal motor cortices. The PPC neuronal circuitry could thus encode and potentially integrate incoming somatosensory information and whisker motor output. However, the information encoded across PPC layers during refined sensorimotor behavior remains largely unknown. To uncover the sensorimotor features represented in PPC during voluntary whisking and object touch, we performed loose-patch single-unit recordings and extracellular recordings of ensemble activity, covering all layers of PPC i

Direct current stimulation-induced synaptic plasticity in the sensorimotor cortex: structure follows function.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive direct current stimulation (DCS) of the brain induces functional plasticity in vitro and facilitates motor learning across species. The effect of DCS on structural synaptic plasticity is currently unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study addresses the effects and the underlying mechanisms of anodal DCS on structural plasticity and morphology of dendritic spines in the sensorimotor cortex (M1/S1). METHODS: A DCS electrode setup was combined with a chronic cranial window over M1/S1 in transgenic Thy1-GFP mice, to allow for in vivo 2-photon microscopy and simultaneous DCS. Contra

Differential grey matter changes in sensorimotor cortex related to exceptional fine motor skills.

Functional changes in sensorimotor representation occur in response to use and lesion throughout life. Emerging evidence suggests that functional changes are paralleled by respective macroscopic structural changes. In the present study we used voxel-based morphometry to investigate sensorimotor cortex in subjects with congenitally malformed upper extremities. We expected increased or decreased grey matter to parallel the enlarged or reduced functional representations we reported previously. More specifically, we expected decreased grey matter values in lateral sensorimotor cortex related to co

Chronological changes in astrocytes induced by chronic electrical sensorimotor cortex stimulation in rats.

Motor cortex stimulation (MCS) is a treatment option for various disorders such as medically refractory pain, poststroke hemiplegia, and movement disorders. However, the exact mechanisms underlying its effects remain unknown. In this study, the effects of long-term chronic MCS were investigated by observing changes in astrocytes. A quadripolar stimulation electrode was implanted on the dura over the sensorimotor cortex of adult rats, and the cortex was continuously stimulated for 3 hours, 1 week, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks. Functional MR imaging of the human sensorimotor cortex after toe-to-finger transplantation.

BACKGROUND: A model of toe-to-finger transplantation has been used in studying peripheral nerve regeneration and central reorganization. It was found that recovery of sensory perception depends not only on peripheral reinnervation but also on central integrative mechanisms. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to investigate functional changes of the brain and somatotopic representation of the transplanted toes after toe-to-finger transplantation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six patients who had toe-to-finger transplantation from 3 to 8 years earlier underwent motor and sensory functional MR imaging studies of

Augmented pain-evoked primary sensorimotor cortex activation in adolescent girls with juvenile fibromyalgia.

Juvenile fibromyalgia (JFM) is a chronic widespread pain condition that primarily affects adolescent girls. Previous studies have found increased sensitivity to noxious pressure in adolescents with JFM. However, the underlying changes in brain systems remain unclear. The aim of this study was to characterize pain-evoked brain responses and identify brain mediators of pain hypersensitivity in adolescent girls with JFM. Thirty-three adolescent girls with JFM and 33 healthy adolescent girls underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging scans involving noxious pressure applied to the left thumbn

Handedness Side and Magnetization Transfer Ratio in the Primary Sensorimotor Cortex Central Sulcus.

Left-handers show lower asymmetry in manual ability when compared to right-handers. Unlike right-handers, left-handers do not show larger deactivation of the ipsilateral primary sensorimotor (SM1) cortex on functional magnetic resonance imaging when moving their dominant than their nondominant hand. However, it should be noted that morphometric MRI studies have reported no differences between right-handers and left-handers in volume, thickness, or surface area of the SM1 cortex. In this regard, magnetization transfer (MT) imaging is a technique with the potential to provide information on micr

Human Sensorimotor Cortex Control of Directly Measured Vocal Tract Movements during Vowel Production.

During speech production, we make vocal tract movements with remarkable precision and speed. Our understanding of how the human brain achieves such proficient control is limited, in part due to the challenge of simultaneously acquiring high-resolution neural recordings and detailed vocal tract measurements. To overcome this challenge, we combined ultrasound and video monitoring of the supralaryngeal articulators (lips, jaw, and tongue) with electrocorticographic recordings from the cortical surface of 4 subjects (3 female, 1 male) to investigate how neural activity in the ventral sensory-motor
