Randomised controlled trial of the effect of coloured overlays on the rate of reading of people with specific learning difficulties.

A randomised controlled trial has demonstrated that, for selected children with reading difficulties, individually prescribed coloured filters reduce symptoms of asthenopia. In the present study, we investigate the effect of individually prescribed coloured overlays on the rate of reading. Subjects were 33 children and adults who: had consulted a specific learning difficulties clinic; had received treatment to normalise any conventional optometric and orthoptic anomalies; and subsequently reported symptomatic relief from coloured filters. These subjects carried out the Wilkins Rate of Reading

[Low-vision aids in visually handicapped children (author's transl)].

It is reported on 71 visually handicapped pupils. The visual acuity of 48 of these children could be tested with low-vision aids and the electronic television reading apparatus (Reinecker). With telescopic glasses (Zeiss, Keeler) 31 children had an average improvement of their visual acuity of two lines on a test board for near vision (Birkhäuser). With the reading apparatus 43 children showed an improvement of the visual acuity of 5 more lines. Only 3 to 21 pupils, who had been offered a regular use of the telescopic glasses, decided to have one. Finally our own experiences are compared with

[Evaluation of the medical treatment situation of the visually impaired : Significant differences between young and old].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Patients with irreversible visual impairment need individual visual rehabilitation to regain or improve reading ability and mobility. To analyze the prescription of low vision aids (LVA) and their relation to age, we performed a retrospective chart analysis of our specialized low vision outpatient clinic. METHODS: Patient charts of all patients who attended our low vision outpatient clinic from 2014-2016 were analyzed with respect to the diagnosis, visual acuity, magnification needs, age and prescribed or used LVA. RESULTS: The evaluation comprised data from 1548 pa

Effective learning and retention of braille letter tactile discrimination skills in children with developmental dyslexia.

Children with developmental dyslexia (DD) may differ from typical readers in aspects other than reading. The notion of a general deficit in the ability to acquire and retain procedural ('how to') knowledge as long-term procedural memory has been proposed. Here, we compared the ability of elementary school children, with and without reading difficulties (DD, typical readers), to improve their tactile discrimination with practice and tested the children's ability to retain the gains. Forty 10-11-year-olds practiced the tactile discrimination of four braille letters, presented as pairs, while bli

A sensory-motor-sensory circuit underlies antinociception ignited by primary motor cortex in mice.

Sensory-motor integration is crucial in the processing of chronic pain. The primary motor cortex (M1) is emerging as a promising target for chronic pain treatment. However, it remains elusive how nociceptive sensory inputs influence M1 activity and how rectifying M1 defects, in turn, regulates pain processing at cellular and network levels. We show that injury/inflammation leads to hypoactivity of M1Glu pyramidal neurons by excitation-inhibition imbalance between the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) and the M1. The impaired M1 output further weakens inputs to excitatory parvalbumin neurons of

Assistive technologies and interventions to enhance medication management among individuals with sensory impairments: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: Medication management presents unique challenges for individuals with sensory impairments, often leading to medication errors, poor adherence and reduced independence. While assistive technologies offer promising solutions, evidence remains fragmented across sensory domains. This scoping review aimed to identify assistive technologies and other interventions, designed to support medication management among individuals with visual or hearing impairments. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science. Relevant studies were analysed and reported in acco

Reduced perioperative sensory impairment could lower postoperative delirium incidence: a before-and-after study in older patients with hip fracture.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common complication in older patients. Multicomponent prevention reduces POD but requires substantial resources. The effect of single interventions derived from multicomponent programs remains elusive, but it is essential to assess their effect to identify which components are meaningful. This study investigates whether a single intervention from a multicomponent program may reduce the incidence of POD. METHODS: This prospective, single-center before-and-after study evaluated older surgery patients at a university hospital's geriatric trauma cente

[Neurological complications with HIV infection].

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) induces acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in humans. Neurological complications occur frequently in patients with AIDS. About 20 to 40% of all these patients develop neurological symptoms, and in about 10% of AIDS patients, the onset of the disease is characterized by neurological symptoms. These may be related to primary HIV infection or to any of a large number of opportunistic viral and non-viral infections. HIV itself induces acute HIV aseptic meningitis, HIV-1-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND), HIV distal sensory polyneuropathy, and HIV v

Proprioceptive intervention improves reading performance in developmental dyslexia: An eye-tracking study.

Developmental dyslexia is characterized by difficulties in learning to read, affecting cognition and causing failure at school. Interventions for children with developmental dyslexia have focused on improving linguistic capabilities (phonics, orthographic and morphological instructions), but developmental dyslexia is accompanied by a wide variety of sensorimotor impairments. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of a proprioceptive intervention on reading performance and eye movement in children with developmental dyslexia. Nineteen children diagnosed with developmental dyslexia we

Object Identification and Safe Route Recommendation Based on Human Flow for the Visually Impaired.

It is difficult for visually impaired people to move indoors and outdoors. In 2018, world health organization (WHO) reported that there were about 253 million people around the world who were moderately visually impaired in distance vision. A navigation system that combines positioning and obstacle detection has been actively researched and developed. However, when these obstacle detection methods are used in high-traffic passages, since many pedestrians cause an occlusion problem that obstructs the shape and color of obstacles, these obstacle detection methods significantly decrease in accura

Vision multiplexing: an engineering approach to vision rehabilitation device development.

Multiplexing is the transmission of two or more messages simultaneously over the same communication channel in a way that enables them to be separated and used at the receiving end. The normal visual system provides us with a very wide field of view at an apparent high resolution. The wide field of view is continuously monitored at a low resolution, providing information for navigation and detection of objects of interest. These objects of interest are sampled over time using the high-resolution fovea. Most disabling visual conditions impact only one of the components, the peripheral low-resol

Low vision rehabilitation of the albino patient.

From the eye care professional's point of view, the three most common types of albinism are tyrosinase-negative oculocutaneous albinism, tyrosinase-positive oculocutaneous albinism and ocular albinism. Skin and uveal hypopigmentation is variable in this condition depending on the type of albinism. However, all types of albinism lack the necessary uveal pigmentation have subnormal visual acuity. Using low vision rehabilitation techniques such as modifying lighting and providing telescopic optical devices, these patients can experience dramatic improvements in functional visual acuity. Genitofemoral and perineal neuralgia after transobturator midurethral sling.

BACKGROUND: Midurethral slings successfully treat stress urinary incontinence through a minimally invasive vaginal approach. Postoperative pain related to sling placement can occur and poses both diagnostic and treatment dilemmas. CASE: Four years after transobturator midurethral sling placement, the patient presented with complaints of left labial pain and dyspareunia since surgery. Using sensory mapping and a nerve stimulator, the problem was identified in the distribution of the genitofemoral nerve. Conservative therapy with a centrally acting neuromodulatory drug and nerve block relieved

Research and Implementation of Travel Aids for Blind and Visually Impaired People.

Blind and visually impaired (BVI) people face significant challenges in perception, navigation, and safety during travel. Existing infrastructure (e.g., blind lanes) and traditional aids (e.g., walking sticks, basic audio feedback) provide limited flexibility and interactivity for complex environments. To solve this problem, we propose a real-time travel assistance system based on deep learning. The hardware comprises an NVIDIA Jetson Nano controller, an Intel D435i depth camera for environmental sensing, and SG90 servo motors for feedback. To address embedded device computational constraints,

Rehabilitation strategies for patients with homonymous visual field defects.

Homonymous visual field defects (HVFDs) are among the most common disorders that occur in brain damage, particularly after stroke. They lead to considerable disabilities, particularly with reading and visual exploration. A variety of different approaches, including optical aids and visual training techniques, have been examined for the rehabilitation of these HVFDs. Despite the considerable ingenuity that has been applied and anecdotal evidence that has accumulated, rigorously controlled trials that clearly establish efficacy of any method are lacking.
