The methods in use for the detection of T pallidum-specific antibodies in human sera are the 19S-(IgM-)FTA-ABS and the IgM-SPHA test. Encouraging results have been obtained with the IgM-ELISA-TP technique using new antigens. The development of the different methods up to the present time are described. The clinical observation has been made that there might be an unacceptable number of false-positive enzyme immunoassay (EIA) test results for IgM among persons suspected of having coccidioidomycosis. Patients with a positive result for IgM by EIA are thought to have a diagnosis of acute coccidioidomycosis. However, this study found that 82% of patients with an IgM-positive and IgG-negative EIA result did not have coccidioidomycosis.

BACKGROUND: Rubella and congenital rubella syndrome remain a problem in the United States; institutionalized individuals are at higher risk. We assessed demographic variables and rubella serology in a population of institutionalized adults with mental retardation.
METHODS: Subjects were 181 institutionalized adults with mental retardation. We reviewed charts to determine patient's age, sex, race, and fertility status (if female), cause of mental retardation, and rubella history. Serologic testing to determine rubella immunity was done.

Granulomatous hepatitis as the sole manifestation of acute Q fever has been reported only rarely, although minimal hepatic dysfunction may be common in the acute disease. In this paper we report two patients with acute Q fever who presented with hepatitis; one of whom had granulomatous hepatitis on liver biopsy. We discuss the serological diagnosis of acute and chronic Q fever particularly in relation to hepatitis.
