Seroma prevention with topical Abnobaviscum sclerotherapy following excision of giant cervical lipoma.

BACKGROUND: Lipomas are common benign tumors of mesenchymal origin that are composed of mature adipocytes. Giant lipomas have a diameter ≥ 10 cm in one or more dimensions or weigh at least 1,000 g. The surgical excision of a giant lipoma requires extensive dissection, increasing the risk of a seroma, which can cause surgical site complications such as wound infection and necrosis. Sclerotherapy with Abnobaviscum (Viscum album extract) is a relatively new technique used to reduce malignant pleural effusion. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of prophylactic sclerotherapy using Abnoba

Delayed periprosthetic seroma in a male Poland syndrome patient: A case report.

RATIONALE: Custom-made implant is an accepted treatment option for treatment of chest deformity in Poland syndrome. Unlike the raised concerns and awareness for the long-term consequences of breast implants, the long-term complications of customized implants for special purposes like Poland syndrome has not been reported in the literature. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 44-year-old male with Poland syndrome presented to our institution complaining of a large bulge and fluctuation on the right chest wall. This occurred after 14 years from the initial implant surgery for correction of chest wall deformity

The achilles heel of minimally invasive inguinal lymph node dissection: Seroma formation.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the incidence of post-operative seroma and interventions attempted to reduce this complication in patients undergoing minimally invasive inguinal lymph node dissection (MILND). BACKGROUND: MILND has resulted in fewer wound complications, hospital readmissions, and shorter length of stay; unfortunately, seroma formation remains a major source of morbidity. METHODS: A retrospective study of MILNDs performed from 2010 to 2017 was conducted. Different interventions were trialed attempting to combat this problem. We report the analysis with respect to seroma formation. RES

Use of albumin polymers during breast cancer surgery improves postoperative seroma outcome.

The effect of an albumin polymer instillation (Bioglue® Cryolife, Inc., Kenneaw, GA, USA) during breast cancer surgery on postoperative seroma formation was evaluated. Two groups of 34 consecutive patients, treated during operation with and without polymer, were followed postoperatively by weekly ultrasound and clinical evaluation. Seroma was aspirated when the volume exceeded 250 mL. Statistical comparison between 33 of the patients with adhesive- and 32 with non-adhesive-treated patients showed that the former patient group clearly outperformed the latter in production (p<0.001) and duration

Poland syndrome: aesthetic result after late seroma and implant removal without replacement.

We present a case of a delayed seroma with a fibrous capsule formation after insertion of a textured silicone gel-filled implant for the surgical correction of Poland syndrome, in spite of an uneventful intraoperative and early postoperative course. The result achieved after treatment of the seroma without reinsertion of an implant was aesthetically satisfactory.

Triamcinolone reduces seroma re-accumulation in the extended latissimus dorsi donor site.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of donor site seroma after autologous latissimus dorsi (ALD) breast reconstruction is in the order of 70%. In the majority of cases the seroma recurs following an initial aspiration. We designed a double-blind randomised controlled trial to test the hypothesis that an intracavity injection of the anti-inflammatory corticosteroid triamcinolone would inhibit seroma re-accumulation. METHODS: We recruited 52 ALD breast reconstructions in 49 patients, of whom 41 involved immediate reconstruction and 11 delayed reconstruction. Patients exhibiting seromas at their first pos

Prevention and Management of Postoperative Seroma in Patients with Breast Cancer: A Narrative Review.

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative seroma remains a frequent complication following breast cancer surgery in both sexes. Despite continuous surgical advancements, its incidence widely ranges from 3% to 85%, significantly affecting the postoperative course, extending hospitalization duration, and diminishing patients' quality of life. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this narrative review is to evaluate current preventive and therapeutic approaches for postoperative seromas, analyzing the efficacy of surgical techniques, dead space closure, and drainage optimization protocols. METHODS:

Granzyme B Is a Biomarker for Suspicion of Malignant Seromas Around Breast Implants.

BACKGROUND: Granzyme B (GrB) is a serine protease secreted, along with pore-forming perforin, by cytotoxic lymphocytes to mediate apoptosis in target cells. GrB has been detected in tumor cells associated with systemic and breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) but its potential use for detection of early BIA-ALCL has not been fully investigated. OBJECTIVES: Prompted by the increased incidence of BIA-ALCL, the aim of this study was to assess GrB as a new biomarker to detect early disease in malignant seromas and to better understand the nature of the neoplastic ce

Seromas Following Pediatric Spinal Deformity Surgery: Is Operative Management Necessary?

BACKGROUND: Seromas are known complications after pediatric spinal deformity surgery. Although many surgeons perform an early debridement to prevent deep surgical site infections (SSIs), a less invasive approach to seroma management has not been studied. We hypothesized that a conservative approach to seroma management would be safe and yield equivalent outcomes. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of patients who developed a postoperative seroma with or without nonpurulent drainage. Inclusion criteria were patients below 21 years who underwent primary posterior spinal fusion from 19

Management of a Case of Mucor Colonization in Breast Tissue Expander Seroma Pocket.

Mucormycosis has a mortality rate reaching 90%, and is imperative that therapy be initiated rapidly once a diagnosis is made. Successful treatment consists of management of underlying risk factors, surgical debridement, and antifungal therapies. The dilemma whether or not to pursue extensive debridement presents when the wound is cultured positive but the patient is not systemically ill. We present the first reported case of successful medical treatment of a seroma pocket colonized with mucor in a patient undergoing bilateral reconstruction with tissue expander and acellular dermal matrix.

Seroma volume as early indicator for infection in tissue expander-based breast reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Infection is a common and impactful complication following tissue expander (TE)-based breast reconstruction. Seroma is known to be a significant risk factor for infection. Dual-port TE devices facilitate seroma aspiration and quantification postoperatively. We hypothesized that aspiration volume could serve as a predictor of TE infection after drain removal. METHODS: A retrospective review of 180 breasts in 118 patients who underwent immediate prepectoral dual-port TE-based reconstruction was conducted. Timing of infections was delineated based on drain removal. Logistic regressio

From Evidence to Practice: Quilting for Seroma Prevention After Mastectomy and Surgeons' Acceptance.

Introduction Seroma formation is a frequent complication after simple mastectomy due to the creation of a large dead space. Multiple aspirations are required to manage patients' symptoms. At present, breast surgeons lack consensus on effective preventative strategies. To address this issue, we have implemented a technique called quilting, which involves suturing the mastectomy flap to the chest wall muscle to convert the dead space into smaller compartments, thereby reducing the possibility of seroma.  Method An audit was carried out from April 2020 to June 2021 to establish postoperative sero

A nomogram prediction model for postoperative seroma/hematoma in elderly subjects after TAPP.

BACKGROUND: Formation of seroma/hematoma is one of the most common postoperative complications following laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. This study aimed to identify risk factors associated with seroma/hematoma and construct a prediction model. METHODS: Elderly subjects undergoing laparoscopic Transabdominal preperitoneal Patch Plasty (TAPP) were included in this study. The observation endpoint was set as the occurrence of seroma/hematoma within 3 months after TAPP surgery. Independent risk factors were identified through preliminary univariate screening and binary logistic regression an

Intraoperative Hypertonic Saline Irrigation Preventing Seroma Formation in the Treatment of Axillary Bromhidrosis.

PURPOSE: Subcutaneous seroma formation (SF) is commonly seen after axillary bromhidrosis surgeries and its treatment can be challenging and long. Current prevention methods are not consistent, and the treatment includes repeated aspirations and drains, both are associated with higher risk for infections. The purpose of this article is to present a novel and simple technique of intraoperative hypertonic saline irrigation (IHSI) to axillary bromhidrosis subcutaneous dead space, which prevents postoperative SF and enables early drain removal due to reduced secretions. METHODS: From 2015 to 2022,

Subcutaneous extension of perigraft seroma after thoracic aortic surgery - report of three cases.

BACKGROUND: Subcutaneous extension of a perigraft seroma following thoracic aortic surgery is an infrequently encountered complication. For treatment, it is necessary to first exclude the possibility of perigraft fluid collection secondary to infection, a pseudoaneurysm, or impending rupture. However, it is difficult to diagnose collected fluid as indicative of a perigraft seroma, and there is also no standardized treatment for this condition. CASE PRESENTATION: Three patients who had undergone graft replacement of a thoracic aorta with arch reconstruction were referred to our department for

Analysis of clinically significant seroma formation in breast reconstruction using acellular dermal grafts.

With a rise in tissue expander-based breast reconstructions (TEBRs) using acellular dermal matrix (ADM), we have seen an increase in ADM-specific complications. In this study, we aimed to evaluate clinically significant seroma (CSS) formation-defined by the need for a drainage procedure-to determine if there was a difference in incidence between product types: AlloDerm (AL), DermaMatrix (DM), and FlexHD (FHD). This was a retrospective review of consecutive patients who underwent TEBR at a single institution. The total number of reconstructed breasts was separated into the following 4 groups ac

[Perigraft Seroma after Ascending Aorta Replacement with Symptom of Chest Oppression:Report of a Case].

A 75-year-old man underwent redo sternotomy for the management of a perigraft seroma four years after ascending aorta replacement. Three months postoperatively, a subcutaneous effusion at the median sternotomy site necessitated serous fluid drainage. The patient exhibited no significant inflammatory changes. He was referred to our hospital for evaluation of chest oppression. Follow-up computed tomography (CT) revealed a low-density fluid collection surrounding the prosthetic graft. Surgical intervention was performed to evacuate the fluid, with no evidence of active bleeding. The prosthetic gr

Latissimus Dorsi Muscle Sling for Reconstruction of Chronic Seroma Pocket in the Axillary Fossa.

Managing chronic axillary seroma after breast cancer surgery is troublesome because of the challenges in obliterating the seroma pocket and the possible injury to the axillary neurovascular bundles during the procedure. Using the muscle sling technique, we successfully managed an axillary chronic seroma patient after mastectomy with a latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous (LDMC) flap.A 64-year-old woman with right breast cancer underwent radical mastectomy with axillary lymph node dissection 17 years ago. A mass of chronic seroma was observed in the right axilla 1 year postoperatively and graduall
