Use and evaluation of psychological interventions in specialist palliative care settings: results of a national online survey with psychologists and psycho-oncologists.

BACKGROUND: Psychologists play a key role as part of the multiprofessional palliative care team. Meaning-, dignity-centred and existential intervention approaches are designed to preserve dignity, strengthen the sense of meaning and alleviate existential distress at the end of life. However, little is known about psychological interventions used in caring for palliative patients and their relatives. This study aims to describe which psychological interventions are used in palliative care, and to what extent professional experience (years working as a psychologist/psycho-oncologist in a palliat

Implementing a Non-Specialist Delivered Psychological Intervention for Young Adolescents in a Protracted Refugee Setting: a Qualitative Process Evaluation in Lebanon.

There has been an increase in the evaluation and implementation of non-specialist delivered psychological interventions to address unmet mental health needs in humanitarian emergencies. While randomized controlled trials (RCTs) provide important evidence about intervention impact, complementary qualitative process evaluations are essential to understand key implementation processes and inform future scaling up of the intervention. This study was conducted as part of an RCT of the Early Adolescents Skills for Emotions (EASE) psychological intervention for young adolescents with elevated psychol

Suffering and Salutogenesis: A Conceptual Analysis of Lessons for Psychiatry From Existential Positive Psychology (PP2.0) in the Setting of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a widespread effect on the thoughts, emotions and behavior of millions of people all around the world. In this context, a large body of scientific literature examining the mental health impact of this global crisis has emerged. The majority of these studies have framed this impact in terms of pre-defined categories derived from psychiatric nosology, such as anxiety disorders, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. These constructs often fail to capture the complexity of the actual experiences of the individuals being studied; more specifically, they describ

Landscape extraordinariness and visitors' psychological restoration in national park settings: a chain mediation model of awe, construal level, and connectedness to nature.

INTRODUCTION: The psychological restorative potential of ordinary green spaces is well documented, yet the mechanisms linking extraordinary natural landscapes to restoration remain underexplored. This study conceptualizes landscape extraordinariness as a continuous subjective perceptual construct and proposes a chain mediation model, grounded in the Cognitive-Affective Personality System framework, to examine the roles of awe, construal level, and connectedness to nature in visitors' psychological restorative benefits in national park settings. METHODS: Structured questionnaires were administ

Facilitators and barriers to participation and scale-up of a non-specialist delivered psychological intervention for adolescents in low-resourced settings: a process evaluation.

Globally, the number of refugees and displaced individuals has surpassed 100 million for the first time in history. Refugees are more likely than non-refugee populations to experience psychological distress and develop mental disorders. Early Adolescent Skills for Emotion (EASE), developed by the World Health Organization, is a potentially scalable task-sharing intervention targeting symptoms of internalizing disorders such as depression and anxiety for 10-15 years old and their caregiver. Prior to this study a randomized controlled trial in Amman, Jordan was conducted showing effectiveness of

Prevention and mitigation strategies for psychological disorders in European ongoing and post-war settings: lessons from the 2022 Russo-Ukrainian war.

There is an ongoing need to facilitate the development and implementation of preventative measures and prophylactic steps to mitigate the development of psychiatric disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) within traumatized populations in theaters of war (e.g., 2022 Russo-Ukrainian War). If successful, these measures have the potential to reduce the incidence, severity, and duration of psychological distress and posttraumatic stress reactions, including PTSD, while increasing the likelihood of resilience. This conceptual analysis paper will review the psychological effects of ei

Characterizing sleep, headache-related disability, and psychological functioning among adolescents with continuous headache: A pilot study from a tertiary clinical setting.

OBJECTIVES/BACKGROUND: Youth with continuous headache are understudied, are presumed to be more psychosocially complex and impaired than youth with remitting headache presentations, and are at risk for poor clinical outcomes. Given links between sleep and pain, characterizing sleep among youth with continuous headache may inform intervention targets. This study was undertaken to describe the sleep characteristics of a sample of treatment-seeking adolescents with continuous headache and contextualize these data by comparing the sleep-wake behavior of youth with continuous headache to youth with

Psychological and somatic distress profiles in young adults in and out of conflict settings: a cluster-based analysis of three population-based studies in Ukraine and Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Young adulthood is a developmental period characterized by major life transitions and increased exposure to stress, during which vulnerability to psychological and somatic symptoms may be heightened. These symptoms frequently co-occur, posing challenges for diagnostic and treatment approaches. Despite the mental and physical symptom burden among young adults, population-based data on symptom patterns in this age group remains sparse. This study investigates psychological and somatic symptom patterns among young adults in three populations with differing socio-geographic and war-rel

Designing, Implementing, and Evaluating an Adapted Stress First Aid and Psychological First Aid Model in a Hospital Setting: Results from a Multi-year Study.

Healthcare workers are exposed to many stressors including long hours, intense physical and emotional labor, and consistent exposure to suffering and death. Together these stressors can culminate into more chronic and severe stress responses when not appropriately addressed. To help mitigate the impact of these stressors, peer-administered post-event psychosocial support programs have been developed, such as Psychological First Aid and Stress First Aid. Unfortunately, few resources exist to help those interested in designing, implementing, and evaluating such a program within their organizatio
