Factors associated with depression: sex differences between residents of Quilombo communities.

INTRODUCTION: The Quilombola population is subject to numerous sources of social vulnerability, but few studies investigate their physical or mental health conditions. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the factors associated with depression in men and women, separately. METHODOLOGY: Cross-sectional population-based study with 764 randomly selected participants from five quilombo communities in Vitória da Conquista, Bahia, Brazil. The cutoff point for depression was ≥ 10 points, assessed by the Patient Health Questionnaire score (PHQ-9), and the presence of five or more symptoms. We estimated the pr

Resilience and syndemic risk factors among African-American female sex workers.

Research on street-based female sex workers documents a multitude of problems faced by these women, such as substance use, HIV risk, mental health problems, victimization, and homelessness. The presence of problems such as these is understood as a syndemic, or co-occurrence of two or more risk factors that act synergistically to create an excess burden of disease. However, the syndemic framework has not previously incorporated the examination of resilience to understand what protective factors enable female sex workers to cope with syndemic risk. Using 562 baseline interviews from street-based

Pediculus capitis infestation according to sex and social factors in Argentina.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the intensity of Pediculus capitis infestation (abundance) among Argentinean schoolchildren. Children's sex and social stratum were analyzed as modifiers of the general prevalence and degree of parasitism. METHODS: The study included 1,370 schoolchildren (692 girls, 678 boys) from 26 schools of the province of La Rioja (21 public schools, five private schools). Classic prevalence was obtained as the percentage of children with nits and/or lice. Moreover, five degrees of parasitism were classified: 0) children with no signs of pediculosis; 0+) children with evidence of

Factors associated with multiple sex partners among junior high school students.

Twenty-one percent of a sample of inner-city junior high school students were found to be sexually active (n = 403). Only 31% of them reported a single lifetime sexual partner, 25% reported two partners, and 43% reported three or more partners. Logistic regression analysis evaluated the influence of demographic, psychosocial, and behavioral factors on the adolescents' lifetime number of sex partners. Respondents whose sexual debut occurred before age 13 years were nine times more likely to report three or more sex partners compared with those whose first sexual intercourse was at age 15 or 16

Cardiovascular contributions to dementia: Examining sex differences and female-specific factors.

Growing evidence underscores the importance of cardiovascular contributions to Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD). While sex differences in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and outcomes are well established, the question of whether vascular contributions to AD/ADRD vary by sex has only recently garnered attention. In this narrative review, we discuss sex differences in conventional CVD risk factors (e.g., hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes), as well as underrecognized female-specific (e.g., menopause history, polycystic ovary syndrome, adverse pregnancy outcomes) an

Sex-based influential factors for dental caries in patients with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a common mental disorder that seriously affects patients' daily lives and brings heavy psychological and economic burdens to their families and society. The oral problems of patients with schizophrenia are gradually gaining attention, among which dental caries are among the most common oral diseases. Sex differences may be related not only to the various clinical symptoms of schizophrenia but also to different oral hygiene statuses; therefore, the main purpose of this paper is to investigate sex differences related to influencing factors for dental caries in patien

Induced abortion and associated factors among female sex workers in Iran.

OBJECTIVES: Induced abortion is an occupational hazard for female sex workers (FSWs). This study aimed to examine the prevalence and factors associated with induced abortion among FSWs in Iran. METHODS: 1337 FSWs aged ≥18 years who reported selling sex to more than one male client in the past 12 months were recruited in 13 major cities in Iran between January and August 2015. Bivariable and multivariable modified Poisson regression models were constructed to examine the correlates of induced abortion. Adjusted prevalence ratios (APRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were reported. RESULT

Factors associated with HIV infection among female sex workers in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Female sex workers (FSWs) are one of the most-at-risk population groups for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. This paper aims at identifying the main predictors of HIV infection among FSW recruited in the 2nd Biological and Behavioral Surveillance Survey in 12 Brazilian cities in 2016. METHOD: Data were collected on 4245 FSW recruited by respondent driven sampling (RDS). Weights were inversely proportional to participants' network sizes. To establish the correlates of HIV infection, we used logistic regression models taking into account the dependence of observations r

Risk Factors for Domestic Child Sex Trafficking in the United States.

Despite increased effort to respond to human trafficking at national and state levels, very little empirical research has been conducted on domestic child sex trafficking. This study retrospectively examines associations between multiple risk factors and domestic child sex trafficking (i.e., entry into the commercial sex industry under the age of 18) in a sample of individuals aged 16 and older currently involved in the commercial sex industry ( N = 273). Two primary research questions are addressed: (1) What set of risk factors, prior to entering the commercial sex industry, are associated wi

Breed and sex risk factors for canine babesiosis in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: In South Africa, canine babesiosis typically is an acute disease in susceptible individuals and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Despite the importance of the disease, there have been no large studies that have examined the influence of breed and sex on disease susceptibility. HYPOTHESIS: Toy breeds have a lower risk of babesiosis than working dogs. ANIMALS: A total of 1,222 dogs diagnosed with canine babesiosis and 11,484 noninfected dogs presented to the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital's small animal outpatient clinic between 2004 and 2010. METHODS: Retr

Sex differences in factors associated with childhood- and adolescent-onset wheeze.

RATIONALE: Factors predicting the development of wheeze may differ between sexes and between childhood and adolescence. METHODS: A New Zealand birth cohort of 1,037 children was followed to age 26. For this analysis, those reporting recurrent wheezing at two or more assessments were classified as "wheezers." We examined risk factors for development of wheeze before age 10 (childhood) and subsequently (adolescent-onset) for males and for females separately using Cox regression modeling. RESULTS: Males more often developed childhood wheeze (p = 0.002) and females adolescent-onset wheeze (p < 0

Associations between reproductive and menstrual factors and postmenopausal sex hormone concentrations.

Reproductive and menstrual characteristics, as well as high circulating estrogen concentrations, are associated with risk of hormone-related cancers in postmenopausal women. To explore possible etiologic relationships between menstrual/reproductive characteristics and risk of hormone-related cancers, we examined associations between menstrual/reproductive factors and serum concentrations of free estradiol, total estradiol, estrone, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). This study was conducted in 173 postmenopausal women using data from the prerandomizati

Factors influencing to early initiation of sex work among female street sex workers in Jimma and Agaro Towns, Southwest Ethiopia.

Early initiation of street sex work refers to the exchange of sexual services for money or drugs, which occurs when sex workers solicit customers in public street areas before turning 18 years old. The study explores the early initiation of risky street sex behaviors among female street sex workers in two towns in southwest Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 219 female street sex workers in Jimma and Agaro towns. Data was collected through face-to-face interviews in five key population clinics (KPCs) from April 15 to September 15, 2024, and analyzed using SPSS version 25. Th

Factors associated with sexually transmitted infection diagnosis in women who have sex with women, women who have sex with men and women who have sex with both.

INTRODUCTION: Many US women report same sex behaviour, yet data on risk factors and STIs in women who have sex with women (WSW), women who have sex with both men and women (WSB) and how these compare to women who have sex with men only (WSM) remain limited. Here we compared self-identified WSW, WSB and WSM attending two STI clinics in Baltimore, Maryland. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis using a database of first clinic visits 2005-2016. WSW and WSB were compared with an age-matched random sample of WSM. Proportions were compared using the χ2 test. Acute STI (aSTI) was defined as go

Sex as a Factor in Murine Radiation Research: Implications for Countermeasure Development.

There is an increased threat of exposure to ionizing radiation; in the event of such exposure, the availability of medical countermeasures will be vital to ensure the protection of the population. Effective countermeasures should be efficacious across a varied population and most importantly amongst both males and females. Radiation research must be conducted in animal models which act as a surrogate for the human response. Here, we identify differences in survival in male and female C57BL/6 in both a total body irradiation (TBI) model using the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AF
